Artist Information

Biography

Christine Atallah and the Bassalindos are a Canadian band out of Montreal. Christine has been described as the Rebel Diva, having left home at a tender age to persue her music and rebelling from a traditional family. The music is a cosmopolitan blend of East and West: multilingual pop/world music with Latin and Arabic roots soul, and nuances of jazz. The music has been described as: “Rhythmic, exotic and sexy music- intelligent and acoustic; with sensitive and stirring lyrics, melodies and arrangements.” Christine has been compared to Natcha Atlas, Souad Massi, Pink Martini and even Garabe. Her musical adventures have taken her from Opera in early days, jazz divahood to guest vocals on Metal albums..

Their album: Escapades included the participation of many gifted artists: such as Jesus El Niño Perez: (“Roberto Torres”, “Oscar D'Leon”, “Ricardo Lemvo” & “Makina Loca”/Miami Sound) as guest arranger and player in Susurro, Alrededor and Me Voy. They also feature Hussein El Imam, renowned Egyptian musician and TV and film personality as lyricist and vocalist on the Egyptian track titled, Idman. The mix of the album was done in New York by Chuck Zwicky who has mixed “Prince”, “Delirious”, “Chantal Kreviazuk” and “Soul Asylum.”

Album two is on the drawing board and sounding more pop than Escapdes and is mostly in English... percussion and exotic instruments do still invoke other far away places inner and outer.

Christine could be described as a rebellious belly dancing Diva- Diana Krall, blended with Fairuz, a French Sade meeting Souad Massi along with a fair dose of Shakira mixed in. She makes no apologies for the variety of styles she incorporates in her absorbing, coloful work. The band has been compared to Pink Martini and the Gypsy Kings, but do not sound quite like anyone else. Christine and the Bassalindos create and celebrate innovative Canadian Arabic-world pop with Eastern sonorities scales and instrumentation, pop lyrics and chords changes, Jazz chords and flavor and hot Latin grooves in a vital and exhilarating union of styles.

Christine’s velvety vocal beauty, inspiring poetry in several languages, on plaintive Middle Eastern melodies collide beautifully with Western jazz scales and pop chords to soar and surprise. The melodies are unforgettable and the tempi evocative of the percussion of hot countries; unlike the image of the cold North where she lives. To the unique instrumentation add a thrilling percussion section of both traditions in migrating drum styles from Bossa, to Arabic, to Latin through to pop and jazz and you have the Bassalindos. The chemistry is fantastic as these fine performers traverse each other’s musical terrain in a union that speaks of amity, harmony and concord. In whichever of the many languages Christine sings in- the yearning and passion you will understand. You will be conveyed to a place where cares cannot reach, fantasies unfold and dreams bestirred. A musical magic carpet ride.

BIOGRAPHIES: of BAND MEMBERS

CHRISTINE ATALLAH : Lead Vocalist. Born in the wintry North there is nothing cold about blazingly hot new star Christine Atallah and her multi-lingual exotic and jazzy world pop music in five languages. Born in a conservative Arabic family, she heard her musical calling early and ran away from home at 17. Still a rebel today, she commands attention, speaks out for women and is a fascinating and erudite songwriter. Christine grew up as an opera prodigy and toured the world. Cinéphiles were regaled by her stirring screen appearance and hauntingly beautiful singing in Denis Arcand's Jésus de Montréal, nominated for an Academy Award. She has worked internationally on stages, in films, TV, and a bevy of engagements and projects. She lived and recorded in New York City where she composed alongside Clifford Anderson of the Sonny Rollins band, studied dance and appeared in films and music videos. This multidisciplinary artist, has been praised for her compelling stage presence and heartrending voice. She turned from opera diva to jazzy world pop princes and founded the Bassalindos and is the principal songwriter with collaborator Danny McLaughlin.

Danny McLaughlin: Guitarist and songwriter, equally comfortable on the acoustic as the electric guitars. Danny, trained as a classical player, regularly collaborates with Christine on the creation of material for the band’s albums and live shows. He is Christine's principal musical co-songwriter.

François Lalonde: Bass, studied with the great Michel Donato and with Pierre Pepin, has graced combos from duos to quintets, playing both the acoustic bass and electric bass with equal ease and virtuosity. One of the original Bassalindos, he is an exceptional performer as well as a polished studio player.

Firas Haddad: Percussion & Oud. This busy and charismatic musician began his professional career at the age of 13. He is an outstanding percussionist that also plays: tabla, rek, daf, bendir, dahola and Afro-Cuban percussion such as: congas, djmbay and timbals. He has enhanced such ensembles as: Mek Sili, El Hasni and The Circle of Ecstasy and graced many Festival Stages here and abroad.

Mathieu Tessier : Drums. A precociously talented and energetic drummer, Mathieu is adept at styles ranging from: jazz, world, blues, to funk and pop. He worked with Gregory Charles and regularly plays with Pierre Lalonde and the David Marigarian trio. A drummer in great demand, he made a stunning debut with The Bassalindos.

Setlist

DESCRIPTION: * detailed setlist available upon request
NB* The group have been recognized in the US as Outstanding Performers.*Letters of support from The American Federation of Musicians and from a musicologist from the SMITHSONIAN institute also available.

DUO TO FULL GROUP AVAILABLE, as per your programming needs.

The typical full show is comprised of two sets of 45 minutes of original music each or more or less as required by the venue. Original repertoire is extensive and is ideal for outdoor venues, and also perfectly suited to indoor soft seater venues and more informal locales such as cabarets and lounges. The music appeals to sophisticated audiences from a wide age range. The Bassalindos have been featured at venues and Festivals the world over-- as part of world, folk, latin and jazz events. A DUO of Christine and Danny (guitar) is available, as well as a TRIO of voice, guitar and bass, with the same original repertoire. Presenters may request specific covers of various songs for special shows or events: the group performed their own fresh versions of great covers and standards like Message in a Bottle and Wonderful World. One lucky presenter got Christine to sing a classical piece as a surprise for the audience.

A typical set of original music would include song from the Escapades album such as: Salaam, a lively idealistic expression of the hope for world peace sung in five languages; Taa Ya Habibee, an Arab-Latino song of pleading and persuasive love in Arabic and French with a lilting oud solo; Night of Secrets, a regretful and cathartic exotic rock arabic rock-pop song of unusual form which speaks of the darkness of lies over an electric sitar.Bow wow man, is a playful and percussive denuded jazz song which speaks of a womanizing and irresponsible gambler: a live audience favorite. Let me Be Me- a touching ballad where a repressed woman speaks out for her freedom, individuality and desire for freedom.

Christine's music, often described as cinematic talks about: a princess in the desert dreaming of a face she yearn for, love needlessly lost, fidelity and lasting union, flirting with danger, obsession, living in the moment, small joys and large hope, strife and finally- peace, a dream dear to Christine's heart, especially for the Middle East.
