Biography

All About Buford is an acoustic pop vocal band from Boston, New York City and Philadelphia who switch seamlessly between a cappella and guitar-backed formats, delivering pure vocals, complex arrangements, and intricate harmonies. The rhythmic background of AAB is the studied vocal percussion (beatboxing) of Del Coy, who also provides the bass line, simultaneously. There are no drum tracks - but for the acoustic instruments (when used), everything you hear is vocal. Performing an eclectic mix of covers and originals, All About Buford has been described as both sexy AND sophisticated. They have performed steadily at venues large and small since their inception in 2000, and were the 2003 Boston Regional Harmony Sweepstakes champions (runner-up in 2002), also winning a "Best Original Song" award that year. All About Buford does a high-energy, surprising show that gets an audience involved.

I've chided half a dozen a cappella shows in print this year, and Malkoff and her comrades were clearly growing weary of my jabs. Most recently, in the Go! column, I mentioned that a United Way benefit added an a cappella band to their bill 'so patrons have an opportunity to step out for popcorn and Junior Mints.'
  
  ...Next comes Malkoff's band, All About Buford. By the time the quartet sings a lovely, subtle cover of the Rodgers and Hart classic 'My Funny Valentine,' I'm warming up to them. Their music is a cappella folk, if such a genre exists, topped off with a human beat provided by vocal percussionist Adeel Pandith.
  
  This is not barbershop or high-school choral group. It's quite good. The harmonies created by Amy Malkoff and Taunia Soderquist melt in my ears.
  
  'It's common that people have misconceptions about a cappella,'' Malkoff tells me a few days after the show. ''A cappella isn't really one style of music. That would be like saying every band with a trumpet is a jazz band.'
  
  Yes, I reluctantly confess, I have grown fond of vocal harmonies. I have a newfound respect for many a cappella ensembles. But still, my favorite All About Buford song is ''Rocket Bride,'' a tune the group sings with guitar accompaniment."

  T.P. - 'No, Mam. Those are voices you are hearing. All the sounds you are hearing are coming from the singers.'
  
  The woman listened, then listened at the door going into the chapel.

Setlist

We do a mix of covers and originals. Both run the gamut stylistically, but with emphasis on pop. We can do set lists of any length, and songs tend to be around the usual 3 minutes each.
