Biography

Midnight Falling was founded in March 2003 by producer/musician Silvio Giarratana and vocalist/lyricist Stacey Scerbo under the name 'Midnight'. They began performing live and changed their name to 'Midnight Falling'.

Their disarmingly direct style is rooted in rock and blues, telling stories reflecting both the lighter and darker sides of life. Blending Silvio's multi-instrumental prowess and Stacey's soaring vocals they create songs that resonate deep into your soul.

When asked their musical secret, they replied: "Our best music is made only when we are all wearing black, and most often at Midnight."

Their debut album, "Beautiful Pearl" is available on iTunes and other sites internationally.

BAND MEMBER BIOGRAPHY:

SILVIO GIARRATANA:
Silvio is a seasoned pro, with experience in many aspects of the music industry as a live and studio musician (guitar, bass, vocals, percussion, MIDI), composer/arranger, engineer, producer/music director and equipment tech. He also owns a project studio, sound company and rehearsal space, complete with state of the art equipment, software and peripherals.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, he was first taught jazz guitar by his father starting at age 3, and was playing his first paying live function and studio dates at age 11. He began writing and producing originals in 1974, mainly influenced by the styles of Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Tony Rice, Jeff Beck and Ritchie Blackmore. Through his teens Silvio was quite busy with multiple bands - exploring the styles of rockabilly, bluegrass, reggae, fusion, latin, southern and progressive rock. By 1979, he was recording, producing and touring in the NY Tri-State area rock, punk and new wave scene with several regional and national acts.

Silvio's first indie label releases were "Eau Savage" in 1980 with Maxwell, then "Did You Kiss Him Goodnight" and "Stop" 1981 (with local favorites Maid To Order). By this point, playing was heavily influenced by Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Peter Gabriel, EVH, Ozzy Osbourne, Jaco Pastorius, Billy Sheehan, Rudy Sarzo, Dennis Murphy, and Tony Levin. He continued to record and produce in the studio by day and play live at night through 1990, when he also opened his first project studio.

In 1991, he relocated studio and all to Southern New England. Since then Silvio has been performing with, producing, and composing for several local and regional artists as well as regional business function bands. Most recently through his fortuitous collaboration with Stacey since 2003 in Midnight, combined with his many musical influences and deep industry experience, his musical voice has been given the wings to soar into the future.

STACEY SCERBO:
Stacey has been singing since she was a child. Her passion for music began in New York at age 4, where she learned one of her first songs from a very famous television star...Kermit the Frog. He was right, it's not easy being green! Her toys included little child's instruments, and she played them until they eventually broke. Encouraged by her parents and elementary school music teachers, she composed her first original song on a plastic recorder at age 7. Later that year, she also gave her first public performance, singing Barbra Streisand's "Don't Rain On My Parade" while sporting a little girl ponytail.

Growing up, she was close to her parents, and they had a great influence on her. Her parents loved music, and spent more than a few late nights at the Filmore East in NYC. Although Stacey was clearly too young to go, they also always had the radio on, and she sang along with her parents favorite music, which was 60's rock. When the radio was off, she found it interesting that the music didn't seem to stop for her, as there were always musical ideas streaming in her mind. Through her teens, she increasingly sought out any music with a talented vocalist she could learn from, gravitating towards the vocals of Pat Benatar, Steve Perry (Journey), Janis Joplin, Donna Summer, Aretha Franklin, Ann Wilson (Heart), Foreigner, David Coverdale (Whitesnake), and AC/DC.

In 1996, she moved to New England, bringing with her a unique vocal mix of technical proficiency with passionate emotion and projection. She continued to hone her vocal skills, studying voice at the renowned Jeannie Deva Voice Studios in Boston. Here, she gained some good vocal insights and began expanding her range and practicing to vocalists like Amy Lee (Evanescence) and Beth Hart. She met Silvio in the least likely of places, a cold windowless room in a random office building. When they learned of their shared love of music, they began writing together, and Midnight came to life. Currently, Stacey performs contemporary, classic, and progressive rock, pop, rhythm & blues, both live and in recording studios.

  The band hails for Manchester, New Hampshire. At the time of recording Beautiful Pearl the band was made up of only two members, Stacey Scerbo (lead vocals) and Silvio Giarratana (all instruments and some vocals). Since then the band has added two new members, Sebastian Schmidt (drums, percussion) and Billy Mitchell (bass).
  
  The new band members were added so that the sound found on Beautiful Pearl could be recreated live.
  
  The first thing that struck me when I listened to Beautiful Pearl was its rich full sound. Stacey Scerbo handles all of the lead vocal duties except for on two songs, "Hard, Inflexible" a rock/blues number with a funky bass, and "I'm Dyin' Inside" where Silvio Giarratana handles them.
  
  Stacey Scerbo's vocals are gritty and work well with the rock-based songs. They have a Pat Benatar meets Ann Wilson (Heart) tone to them.
  
  Silvio Giarratana knows how to handle a guitar, from wailing hard rock to Texas blues riffs he makes it sing with joy with each new chord he hits.
  
  The band's songs deal with life, both the good and bad parts of it. The band shows their more mellow side with the title cut rock ballad, "Beautiful Pearl".
  
  For a debut release this band really has all of their cards in order and comes out of the starting gate at full speed. I'm sure that we'll be hearing a lot more from them now and well into the future.

  "Comfort Me" shows Midnight as a band that is tremendously influenced by the deep-down blues of a Kenny Wayne Shepherd and the progressive rock of a Rush. Throw in a little Every Mother's Nightmare and "Dog Eat Dog"-era Warrant, and individuals have an idea how Midnight starts off their "Beautiful Pearl". There is an unpolished appeal to Midnight that brings me back to the hard rock of the early nineties.
  
  There are hints of grunge present during songs on "Beautiful Pearl", but one cannot deny that the act takes a lot from the rock genre in the years between hair metal and grunge rock. This gives Midnight an unique sound, but one in which a wide array of individuals can find something positive in. The title track has a more ballad type of sound, but Midnight throws in a little bit of country into the mix. The track plays similarly to "Silent Lucidity" and some of the work of a Nelson or Extreme, but Midnight ties this track to the others on the disc with the inclusion of a musically solid instrumental arrangement. "Hard, Inflexible" brings the rock back to "Beautiful Pearl". This track shows a different side to Midnight, a side that links together the psychedelic rock of individuals like Jimi Hendrix with the reggae-rock of bands like Jane's Addiction and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. As is the case with the tracks immediately preceding it, "Hard, Inflexible" is a track that would make it onto radio rotation with ease.
  
  The influences present on "Hard, Inflexible" are very audible, but Midnight is able to subjugate these styles into something that works on "Beautiful Pearl". Another break from the formula comes in "Runnin' That Feelin' Down", which eschews the hard rock crunch of earlier songs for a decidedly-eighties sounding song. The vocals link together Stevie Nicks with The Waitresses, while the rock put forth by the rest of the band bolsters the vocals in all of the right places. Midnight is able to approach a number of styles and different musical influences during "Beautiful Pearl"; individuals that have love for rock music played in the last twenty years will definitely dig this album. The band is due for another full length album in the near future, so pick up "Beautiful Pearl" and keep up on Midnight news. Their "Beautiful Pearl" will find its way into my CD player for months to come.

  1. If I knew absolutely nothing about Midnight Falling, how would you describe the group’s music to me?
  -- Midnight Falling is a songwriting and live performance group based in New England. Our songwriting is progressive rock at the core, often flavored with tinges of other genres. The music tells stories, reflecting both the lighter and darker sides of life.
  
  2. If I were to buy your new album, what songs should I pay particular attention to and why?
  
  -- Well we’d like it if you paid attention to them all! But if you could only listen to 4 songs, we’d have you listen to “I’m Outta Here”, “Beautiful Pearl’, “Comfort Me”, and “I’m Dyin’ Inside”, as they best reflect the direction we’re headed. “I’m Outta Here” is a hard-edged defiant rocker of a tune, a song that seems to rock harder each time we play it. When you’re just so completely done with a hateful situation, and have finally decided it’s just not worth the overhead to continue dealing with it anymore…“I’m Outta Here”.
  
  “Beautiful Pearl” is a hard rock ballad, an edgy song about rediscovering the beauty of music that stands out as a favorite with a lot of fans. “Comfort Me” is a reflective song about sad lost soul, looking for relief when nothing seems to be right, whose life continues to perpetuate itself in badness. “I’m Dyin’ Inside” depicts how your soul feels when someone supposedly close turns out to actually be the complete opposite of what they led you to believe they were - in the worst of ways.
  
  3. When and where did the band form, and where did the name come from?
  
  --Stacey met Silvio in the least likely of places, a cold windowless room in a random office building. We became friends, and learned we had a shared love of music. We first started writing together in 2003 under the name “Midnight”’. We weren’t thinking of forming a live band so much as a songwriting partnership, composing songs as a duo.
  
  Our original intention was to write a lot of tunes and try licensing them, which also explains the vast array of genres on “Beautiful Pearl”. But due to the overwhelmingly positive response the release is receiving, things evolved in a different way from what we’ve planned and we couldn’t be more excited. We started recording and playing gigs, and Midnight Falling grew from there. When we met Sebastian & Billy, we all had an instant connection both musically and personally. They both added a creative, explosive power to the music, and we all just knew we had to write songs together.
  
  As for the band name…Midnight is an instant in time, marking both the height of darkness and the onset of something new. That may sound epic, but it seems things always happen when Midnight comes. And we are no exception - we make our best music when we’re all wearing black, and most often, after Midnight.
  
  4. What was your worst on stage experience? What was your best?
  
  ---WORST: We had a gig at this local hotspot. And the rain. Oh the rain. It was just bucketing. Naturally, there was no covered entrance, so we were moving our brand new, not-yet-paid-for audio system into the venue covered in plastic tarps. The tarps might have helped had it not been so windy. Horizontal rain gets everywhere…we were soaked. We must’ve looked pretty sad, as everyone was running over and handing us whatever random bits of cloth they had to try to dry ourselves.
  
  Now this was supposed to be an outdoor deck gig, and once inside, we realized the venue didn’t really have a plan for an indoor show. They cleared a tiny spot for us, but with ourselves and our rig, it was like trying to fit a gorilla into a tutu - not very pretty. The fact that no one got smacked with a guitar headstock or a microphone remains a mystery of physics and chaos management to this very day.
  
  ---BEST: We had an outdoor summer concert held in the middle of a major downtown area. The weather was nice and the audience was fun that day, people were literally dancing in the streets. People were hanging out of passing cars waving at us. It was already a good show. But what made this show really great was a little old woman named Betsy.
  
  In the midst of all the chaos, Betsy was slowly walking down the street alone, slightly bent over. She wasn’t really paying attention to all the hoopla and she stood out from the crowd like a sore thumb. As she got closer, she glanced up at us and we saw this deeply sad look on her face. It’s that heartbreaking look…we’ve all known or seen older people with that same painful look. And we couldn’t stand seeing her so sad and isolated in a crowd of happy people.
  
  So as we kept playing, we went over to her, smiled, and handed her a maraca. Well Betsy came alive…she stopped and just shook the heck out of that maraca with a big grin. The crowd went wild and was very kind to her. It was so moving to see her painful look dissipate, to see this twinkle come to her eye. It was clear this was the best thing that happened to her in quite a while. She forgot her troubles for a little bit and just had fun, walking away with a smile…and she did that listening to OUR music.
  
  5. Do you think that the Internet (whether it be Internet radio, legal downloading, MySpace, streaming audio, etc.) is a good tool for musicians or is it a bad thing because it hinders profits?
  
  -- Well that certainly is a hot topic. We believe the internet is an outstanding tool for musicians and listeners alike. For us, the internet is a cost effective vehicle which allows us to reach a global audience. We have fans in locations like Germany and Sweden and Brazil, despite having never played in those places. With the limited funding of a small new act, we could never accomplish that without the internet. The internet allows people to find and listen to music from smaller yet very talented musicians, music they would likely have never heard otherwise. Plus they have the instant gratification that has become the expected standard, with access to the music instantly, 24x7, with just a click of a button.
  
  Clearly, the internet has completely changed the music industry landscape, creating both new opportunities and very real challenges to the status quo of how things were traditionally “done”. For large music corporations, it has caused a lot of stress. But for independent artists like ourselves, having the ability to connect with people and sell music globally is quite the boon, both artistically and financially.

  I gotta say that their live show must be insane. Two of them, and one does all instruments? What’s this guy got, fifty arms? Sh*t! It’s got a heavy, blues sound to it. A “Bon Jovi Wanted Dead or Alive” sound to it. After this album though, they plan on all rhythmic, and rock edges. Look the f*ck out.
