Artist Information

Biography

In the fall of 2003, I began working on the release of my first album under the name Mary Carl. Although I recorded most of it by myself with the warm, warm, earthly vocals of Michelle Dyck, I released the album with a full band on April 1, 2005 at the Jimmy Jazz in Guelph, ON. It was completed over the duration of a year and a half, recorded in the bedroom of good friend, Adam Scott. Adam and Michelle along with David Mallery and Rob Fillo joined Richard to make up the full band. Ironically, the CD release party would be our last full-band show.

Initiated by a solo tour in november of 2005 with Chris Yang, and again in February 2006 with Yang and Ryan Newell, I became increasingly involved with the burnt oak music community in guelph, on. Having toured with newell and yang, it became increasingly apparent to me that these were folks i wanted to work with. In august 2006, i went ahead and released "A little less like a rock, a little more like home" on burnt oak. With the help of Steve Hamilton and Bam studios, several local guelph artists, as well as several of my family members, I was able to able to make something that began to reflect the strength of the community, and not simply my musicianship.

Holy holy! Moly moly! Chris yang is nearing the completion of his about to be released album. Recorded with Youth Club Records in Halifax, rumours have suggested as many as 400 tracks on this album with Guest appearances from Griffin Epstein, Ghost Bees, Andy March, that guy walking up the stairs, and yours truely. A tour has been organized for April 25 - May 17 to the East Coast and home.

A band tour has also been organized with his Black Lungs. Some of the shows have been posted.

April 5th is a short set at Manhattan's along side numerous other solo performers from Guelph. The evening is centred around a travelling guitar made from 64 pieces that are supposedly representative of Canadian history and culture.

April 19 at the casbah in Hamilton. BURNT OAK SHOW CASE. yee haw!

Feb 28, 2007

Last day of february. It's honestly impossible to explain the sentimental attachment I have with this day. Upcoming shows in march should be fun. Me and His Black Lungs will be kicking hamilton, Guelph, and toronto. The Band will be touring May 18 through June 7. Chris Yang is finishing his third full-length album. Chris and I will be touring April 25 through May 17. Keep checking in with the calendar for updated info. If you're in Guelph, there is a really important fundraiser taking place at the Grad Lounge Thursday, March 1 at 8:30pm with Spy Machine, Households, and Fellow Worker. It'll be $5/pwyc. It marks one year since Six Nation reclaimed but a parcel of land from Douglas Creek Estates on the south end of Caledonia. If you're reading this today, that's tomorrow night!

enjoying the quieting trend that is slowly taking a firm grasp of the people in the home of 187 huron. As 10:43 gets hurled into 10:44pm, I relive my life as it happened but moments ago in this very home, in this very room, on this very chair. Choir is the topic of the evening. Preparations have been made to have 9 of my closest friends, along side his black lungs, mount the stage tomorrow night at the ebar. sitting here, post-choral boom, listening to the gentle rhythms of my heart, it tells me to feel nothing less than the rock n' roll.

how can 4:40pm feel like the middle of the night? i'm about to finish a book called "ceremony" by leslie marmon silko, a native american author who came out with a few books during the seventies.

of the white european colonizers, it says:

"They fear
They fear the world
They destroy what they fear
They fear themselves"

Chris Yang is making his way out to the east coast at the end of this month to record his new album. i am one of the privaledged individuals who will share this time with him. we have planed a 6 days tour to get us out there. the dates for that should be confirmed in a few days.

november 8th,

on tour with the ghost bees. two nights ago we played in windsor. thank you so much to kevin romain for his rare beauty and hospitality. thank you to his sister for making the poster for the show. thank you to his mother for donating a sheet of canvas, markers, fabric and other supplies to our efforts in having a craft circle setup at the shows from now on. people such as these inject me with viles of inspiration that wrap big smiles around my head and tie up at the back. and to think, we've the whole month ahead of us.

sept 25, 2006

recording is on the friggen verge of being completed. my main focus right now is trying to get my extended family in to throw down some tracks. if you guys are reading this: grandma on keys, uncle scott on mouth harp, aunt bernice on vocals and tamborine, dad on violin, aunt cathy on autoharp, and whoever else can sing, sing. i was recording the other night with some grange street folk. it was really beautiful. good friends and a bottle of wine. 3 hours later we had two songs down. i love you guys.

into the moon,

richard

for the phonetically free willed characters who base a bands music on the way the band's name slips off their tongue, we have finally settled on 'austella'. our first show is at the albion on july 5th . we are opening for my cousin's punk band from ottawa, clock strikes and their friends,no otherway.

as far as the upcoming album is concerned. turns out it is goingto me a moresolo based album mit friends and family. it will be released in august in conjunction with a tour. yee haw. keep an eye on the dates as they are posted.

thanks again to jeff woods forhosting a fantastically cool show at his place in waterloo this past sunday. you are truely an appreciated individual by the mental compartments i have set asidefor occasions such as this to acknowledge genuine people.

10/05/06

good evening. first of all, the new band is coming along fine and dandy. we're looking to start making some public displays of our indecencies byt the end of the summer. still haven't worked out a name for the trio as of yet, however, i think i may just name it after my computer, "COMPAQ MV540".

AS far as recording is concerned, i've been spending most of mytime praciticing withthe band lately, trying to get a better indication of where this is going. I believe the result has been a proposed solo EP with a band album to come.

With that in mind, i am also planning a solo/acoustic tour for august 1-14. i'll let you know as soon as possible what the official dates are for that.

13/03/06

I sat down and had the very first full-band practice with the new band this past saturday. I'm not sure if they realize what they're a part of yet. But, i figure they ought to catch evntually. It felt really good. I hope to get going by having them help me with about 6 songs for the new album.

To cap the tour, it's really hard having that much exposure to Chris yang and Ryan newell for 3 weeks and then resume our daily lives. There is definite withdrawl involved. On the bright side, Yang and I are aiming to book another tour for May. Yee Haw!

28/02/06

I'm still on tour with chris yang and ryan newell. we arrived in lennoxville, Quebec this morning after driving all night. there is much more to that story that i will share with only special individuals who know my middle name. the time the three of us have spent in a confined unit of space, Spike, has really taught us alot about time, space, and people. the shows so far have been great, including certain mishaps that only fit the experience. By friday we will be in Toronto and Sunday, home. It's amazing how time passes when you are not staring at the clock. Here's a link to some pictures of the tour thus far: www.flickr.com/photos/totheocean.

After we played in Philadelphia, we went out to this fantastic pub a few blocks over. After consuming legs and fingers, we went back to his appartment. At 3am, he set up a mic in the kitchen and ryan, chris, and myself recorded yang's "cigarettes and shopping bags" off the kitchen floor. Listen: www.keesan.net/crr/inthekitchen.mp3

08/02/06

All the dates for the Yang-Newell-Laviolette Winter '06 tour are up. Looks like we're going to the ocean and back. If you can make it out to any of the shows in your area, we'd frigg'n love to see you there. Hey, we might even sleep on your floor. To those of you who's floors we sleep on, thank you. Oh yeah, anyone who hasn't go their tickets for the John Rae and the River/Constantine's show tomorrow night (thursday), get yer aunt fanny down to the new record store across from the Jazz and pick some up. -cheers

14/01/06

happy new year. older is what i feel, but shit, i love getting older. i guess i'll have to change the friggen bio. the crappy roommate played their first show in a year last night at the albion. oh, to be in good company. the people who came out are the same people who make me want to play music for the rest of my life. yee haw. we're looking to book another show in march. on the drive home over the holidays, i was listening to neil's ragged glory. i think i would like to do something like that with the crappy. anyway, if you're not up to anything tomorrow (sunday) evening, then stop by the Cornerstone. dave mallery and myself will be rocking out the acoustic guitars. cheers.

13/12/05

It looks like we're gonna be hittin' the road again early next year. Chris Yang and myself plan on touring between Feb. 16 to Mar. 6. We'll know better closer to the dates when and where we'll be playing. Stay tuned! Oh yeah, and I found out that cousin Dave is playing a punk show with band the Clock Strikes at Jason's Pub in Owen Sound on Dec. 23. Personally, I'm camping out the night before with my tent and coleman grill. Holy crap! I wouldn't miss it for the world. (www.clockstrikesmusic.com)

29/11/05

Chris Yang and I are working on some songs for December 17. SPecifically, we plan on covering music arcade by neil young. If i'm not mistaken, this might be the most fun i've had in 8 million years. 127 grange is the address. i believe that it's going to be an all afternoon/evening show. hey hey hey.
