Biography

Since the 2003 release of their debut CD Enter the Temple, Temple 8 has been impressing music fans wherever the band appears. Straddling the realms of Neo-Progressive Rock, Symphonic Rock, and Progressive Metal, Temple 8 delivers a brand of exciting, stadium-ready Progressive Rock full of thick, chunky, driving riffs, melodic chords and open atmospheric vibe that defies tradition.

Inspired by such rock greats as Rush, Triumph, Dream Theater, Spock's Beard, Marillion and Pink Floyd, Temple 8 is philosophically inquisitive and politically irreverent, hitting a home run by using poetic and politically charged lyrics to illustrate the stark state of world affairs, driving toward spiritual awakening, all laid out and wrapped around a superb, epic musical platform.

Veteran performers with conference, festival and tour experience, Temple 8's graphic, controversial background video presentations and backdrops give the a band a visual appeal rivaled only by their major label counterparts.

Temple 8 has a growing number of accolades to its credit including an endorsement with Canada's Carparelli Guitars (formerly Dot-On-Shaft Guitars), long-running top 100 chart positions at Neil Young's "Living With War Today" web site in 2004, an Honorable Mention in the PeaceDriven Songwriting Awards in 2005, inclusion on the Progressive Rock Hall of Fame CD Volume 1 in 2008, and inclusion in the "Noccalula" film soundtrack in 2010. The band is currently in the pre-production stages of their sophomore effort "Iconoclast", available April 2011.

  It took me several months to form an opinion on this debut album of Cleveland based Temple 8. Why? Because I was both excited as surprised by Enter The Temple and I wanted to do the album justice. So I left it for a while and decided to write the review later. One of my conclusions was that what When Dream And Day Unite meant for Dream Theater, then this album could mean the same for Temple 8.
  
  The songs and music all breath something fresh but also familiar. You can detect bands such as Rush, Pink Floyd and Marillion in the music, well at least I do, but it never sounds copied or borrowed. Remarkable considering the fact that this band consists of only two members; Kurt Tischer and David Clark. Tischer is singer/songwriter/musician and Clark the drummer/percussionist. Except for the cheap sound effects used to create a narrative voice the vocal offerings of Tischer holds the attention. The only other vocal contribution is a certain G.W. Bush, who makes a guest appearance in ‘Turn Left’, but I doubt if he knows that himself.
  
  The production of the album isn’t bad but could have been given more balls - but understand that it isn’t bad at all. Maybe someday a remix will be done, like Dream Theater did with the aforementioned album.
  
  There’s no need to go into separate song details, there just aren’t any weak spots, except for the narrative voice. That could and should have been done better, more impressively. So now I’m curious to see if and how Temple 8 can translate this album and music into a live performance.

  Out of Ohio, USA comes TEMPLE 8, a very sensational Progressive Rockband a la RUSH. Their debut CD ‘Enter the temple’ has a playing length of more than 60 minutes, and is from start to finish quite impressive. Leader of the band is KURT TISCHER, who is playing guitar, bass, organ and also sang! Kurt has got a very good voice, somewhere between DENNIS DEYOUNG of STYX fame and GEDDY LEE of RUSH fame. Highlights on the CD are “Ideas of the mind” (straight-ahead uptempo Prog Rocker), “At the summit” (strong melodic Pomprock chorus), “Danger zone” (great up-tempo prog melodic rocker) and “The big picture” (9-minute epic Progrock).   Puh! Es ist lange, sehr lange her, dass ich bei einem Review tagelang gegrübelt habe, um die richtigen Worte zu finden. Exzessiv frickelig ist „Enter The Temple“ nicht, aber trotzdem kein leichtes Album. Sein Reiz, aber auch die Schwierigkeit liegt in seiner spröden, ungewöhnlichen Machart (verfremdete Vocals, sich wiederholende Sequenzen) und in den Gegensätzen. Beides tritt oft zusammen auf („Confessions Of An Old Soul Part I und II“, übrigens in umgekehrter Reihenfolge zur Numerierung auf dem Silberling platziert, „Turn Left“), und dann wird es wirklich hart. Die Widersprüche zeigen sich sehr schön in den beiden Instrumentalstücken, die diese CD eröffnen und beenden, also quasi umschließen. Auf der einen Seite haben wir den Titeltrack mit seinen 6:30 Minuten. Ich finde die Wechsel aus jazzigen Rhythmen und ruhigen Passagen fesselnd, andere verdrehen die Augen, seufzen was von „unnötigem Gefrickel“ (Also doch!) und machen erst mal zu. Ein Fehler denn bereits hier fällt der „rushige“ Baß äußerst positiv auf. Überhaupt erinnert das Zusammenspiel von Baß und Drums immer wieder an die Instrumentals der Giganten, und beim folgenden „Ideas Of The Mind“ erinnert gar der Gesang von Kurt Tischer frappierend an Geddy Lee. Dennoch kein Plagiat, sondern absolut geil! Außerdem werden Gitarre und Keyboards völlig anders gespielt und eingesetzt als bei RUSH. „Ideas Of The Mind“ zeigt, dass diese Kombination sehr ansprechend klingen kann. Ihm ist auch das Motto dieser CD entnommen: „The Cosmic and the Karmic in an endless Game“. Ein Hinweis auf die intelligenten, lesenswerten Texte (gibt´s auf der T8-Homepage: www.3rdear.com/temple8). Am Schluß steht das zugänglichere „Hope“. Es beginnt gefühlvoll mit Akustikgitarre und Piano und steigert sich nach etwa zweieinhalb Minuten zu einem dynamischen Rockstück mit feiner Gitarrenarbeit. Als weitere Höhepunkte stechen das majestätische „At The Summit“ sowie das abenteuerliche „The Big Picture“ mit fernöstlichen Einsprengseln heraus. Gerade in diesen 9 Minuten zeigen TEMPLE 8, dass sie Stimmungen erzeugen können und sehr wohl in der Lage sind, den Hörer mit geschickten Variationen aus An- und Entspannung in ihren Bann zu ziehen. „It´s Alright“ ist dann wieder eine Nummer, an der sich die Geister scheiden werden. Der Refrain klingt nach einem Stück aus den Siebziger Jahren, und damit dürften viele nicht klar kommen.
  
  Alles in allem haben David Clark (Schlagzeug) und Kurt Tischer (alles andere) ein 63minütiges Werk mit 12 Songs von 7 Sekunden bis 9 Minuten geschaffen, dem man sich intensiv widmen muß. „Enter The Temple“ ist ungewöhnlich im Sinne von unkonventionell, und man muß dem Duo Anerkennung zollen, dass sie zugunsten der Spannung das Risiko eingehen, eben diese auch mal zu verlieren und nicht mit jedem Schuß (= Song) einen Treffer zu landen. Das gibt´s dann beim nächsten Mal.

  Der instrumentale Opener - eine Art Ouvertüre - hat ordentlich Druck und stimmt auf Rush-orientierten Prog-Metal ein, auch gesanglich. Die folgenden drei Songs bieten recht unterschiedliche Spielarten dieses Sounds. „Ideas of the Mind“ mit Schepperrhythmus und streckenweise verzerrtem Sprechgesang klingt trotz etwas eingängiger Gitarre interessant. Das gefällige „Confessions of an old Soul Pt. II“ steht für die ruhige Variante. Die Keyboards erinnern ein wenig an Genesis. „Turn left“ schließlich ist ein nett gemachter Reggae, der auch gut ins Ohr geht. Überhaupt klingen die Melodien ganz angenehm, ohne aber mainstreamig zu wirken.
  
  Ab „At the Summit“ tritt dann leider ein Gewöhnungseffekt ein. Bei den nun noch folgenden Songs denkt man, dass man sie doch schon sehr ähnlich auf diesem Album gehört hat bzw. sie erreichen nicht mehr die Substanz der ersten Hälfte. „The Big Picture“ erhält durch den Einsatz einer Sitar immerhin eine spezielle Note. “Confessions of an old soul” wird zum Ende hin noch einmal mit anderem Text wiederholt. Warum? Natürlich um den Konzeptcharakter des Albums zu unterstreichen. Nur schafft dies keine neue Facette der Musik wie dies bei den ersten Stücken der Fall war. Die ambitionierten Texte drehen sich um den Tod bzw. ein Leben nach dem Tod.
  
  Rush-Fans sollten durchaus mal ein Ohr riskieren.

  My Fave: For those of you know what I like—or think you do, I’m going to surprise you. My fave this month is he rock/metal band, Temple 8, from Cleveland. I was just taken with the versatility and technical skills of this band. They dip into musical styles and instrumentation all across the board. Their “Goodbye 42” is a rich composition that feels like a movie soundtrack, and “Hope” begins as a thoughtful guitar solo and builds to a lovely piano/guitar/drums marriage. Then, the band’s “Enter the Temple” combines the best of rock with metal and electronics into this driving extravaganza that could be played with a dozen performers and not just three or four. The brainchild of multi-instrumentalist Kurt Tischer, Temple 8 has both paradox and simplicity at its core. It is both grand and restrained. Their songs, as you might expect, lean to non-mainstream politics without drifting into anarchy and try to point listeners toward a spiritual awakening. This is a breath of fresh air in this genre. Temple 8 has one CD out, Enter the Temple, that they did in 2003. They are way overdue for putting out another, but currently have been so busy touring the country and even made a foray into England last month. Check them out at www.temple8.net.
