Artist Information

Biography

Bev Grant grew up singing and playing in Portland, Oregon, where she began her performing career as a child in a band with her two sisters. After moving to New York City, she devoted herself to topical songwriting and social activism, notably in her band The Human Condition. Bev is featured on the Grammy-nominated Best of Broadside album and is the founder and director of the Brooklyn Women’s Chorus. Her song “We Were There” has become an anthem of women in the labor movement, and many other of her award-winning songs can be found on her numerous recordings.

The “semi-legendary” Ina May Wool has been playing, singing, and writing since she was a small child in Massachusetts, and since then, in Europe and all over the US, in jazz clubs, at folk festivals, in rock musicals, at house concerts, on boats and on the backs of trucks, at Lincoln Center and other concert halls, in blues bars, in folk clubs, and at Off Broadway theaters. Her two albums of original songs have won many awards (Moon Over 97th Street 1999 and Crack It Open 2004). Ina May is also a busy creative coach and guide in action-packed writing workshops for everyone from 8-year-olds to senior citizens.

What people say about WOOL&GRANT:

WOOL&GRANT is the collaboration of veteran singer/songwriters Bev Grant and Ina May Wool. Also featured is producer/instrumentalist Daniel A. Weiss. Together, Ina and Bev have a remarkable synergy. Their songs are sharp, funny, moving, always on target and the settings are musically gorgeous. Jon Gordon, Jon Gordon Music

Wool and Grant's new CD is an instant classic. Recalling Daniel Lanois' production of Willie Nelson's "Teatro", it is at once both present while recalling influences from the past, both timely and timeless in its treatment of issues as complex as fracking and strip mining, as well as beautiful stories of love and desire. The mix is alive with varied and interesting percussion, and never leaves the listener wanting. The two women's voices blend together seamlessly in the fine production by Daniel A. Weiss, featuring excellent guitar and steel work from Ann Klein, and a host of other New York folk luminaries. Wool and Grant are women who aren't afraid to tell it like it is - and expose their own vulnerabilities - with a delicacy and strength, a beautiful, polished grit. Jeremiah Birnbaum
