Biography

Popvert, once a project... now a band. The second release by this Miami/West Palm Beach/Los Angeles combo features the original lineup of Brendan Buckley, Jolie Lindholm, Marthin Chan and Pepvert. Additional guest appearances include Rene Alvarez, Rafael Tarrago and Albert Menendez.

Started as a side/pleasure project for musicians who were each involved in other things, Popvert soon took shape with a particular sound. Their debut EP – drive thru happiness - was released in the US (Eleven:11) and Mexico (Noiselab), and had songs featured in the feature film Elipsis (20th Century Fox).

Popvert also recorded a cover version of New Order's Subculture, which was selected by New Order and released in 2006 on the compilation... Community 2: A NewOrder Online Tribute. They created a video for this track, which was shot in Echo Park, in Sliver Lake, CA, directed by Richard Briglia & Vishwanand Shetti and produced by MC.

Their newest release (2/09) - Infidelity Park - is a full CD, and is full of joy...

It's Jose "Pepvert" Tillan, the Latin music industry player responsible for mentoring Nil Lara and coordinating MTV Latin America's Unplugged series; Volumen Cero guitarist Marthin Chan; and former Rocking Horse Winner vocalist Jolie Lindholm.
  Popvert is not a new band, though, but a onetime collaboration between the trio. Pepvert handles most of the production, while Chan plays guitar and keyboards and Lindholm sings. The resulting Drive Thru Happiness EP has an appropriately breezy quality. Its songs are charming and off-kilter, thanks to their genesis in an unhurried, pressure-free environment.
  
  Of the five tunes on the EP, the opener, "The Big Show," is the strongest. Chan plays a big part in the song's success, thanks to the jangly guitars that fly along at a rocking, midtempo pace. Over all this, Lindholm coos sweetly, "You could find forgiveness," evoking winsome melancholia. The second cut, "Until The End of Time," is a heavier number, with a drum machine that pounds beneath Lindholm's make-up-to-break-up tale.
  
  Even though Drive Thru Happiness is an English-language project, it has the hallmarks of the polished Latin rock sound Pepvert and Volumen Cero are best known for. Its full-bodied instrumentation bears resemblance to Eighties-style modern rock and would sound great on the radio. Appropriately, the trio pay homage to the New Wave with "Electricity," an OMD cover on which Lindholm sings the hook in an eerie vocoder voice.

  Even as it shirks the drug-binging, groupie-banging, therapy-seeking responsibilities of a full-fled...Even as it shirks the drug-binging, groupie-banging, therapy-seeking responsibilities of a full-fledged band, Popvert has managed to construct a remarkably slick, sophisticated EP. The band's press sheet is insistent: "Popvert is not a band... It's a project!" Apparently, core members -- producer/bassist Jose Tillian and guitarist/keyboardist Marthin Chan (of Volumen Cero) -- are more dedicated to their day jobs than to Popvert's shadowy, new-wave electropop.
  Band, project, whatever. Either way, the five songs on this debut shimmer like moonlight on swaying ocean waves. Making that fabled Miami-Dade/Palm Beach connection, Miami residents Tillian and Chan enlist Boca's Jolie Lindholm, former vocalist for defunct indie rockers the Rocking Horse Winner. Aided by a few other vocalists and a trick bag of production flourishes, they float Lindholm's fragile voice over a chilly veneer of vivid guitars, keyboard washes, and diamond-hard rhythms. Whether the Phil Collins citation on "The Big Show" is intentional or not, the song brims with synthesized wist, while the keys and processed drums on "Electricity" are all new New Order. The album's closer, "Nothing/Once 11," sums up the Popvert sound, a glossy, sensual drift among filtered drums, layered vocals, and sharp guitar. Popvert the "project" may vanish like smoke, but the music makes enough of an imprint to remember it by.
