Enter Lucy Vincent.

Formed in the summer of 2005 on the Island of Martha’s Vineyard, Lucy Vincent is that feel good sound from the islands, with an undeniable groove and overflowing energy that puts a smile on your face and shake in your ass.

With an original sound that blends everything from the catchy songwriting of Sublime and the lyrical and musical sophistication of The Police, to the pounding tribal pulse of Rusted Root and the pure party atmosphere of Jamiroquai, Lucy Vincent brings it all in a tight Power Trio package that is sure to rock any club, party or private function.

Having just released their first full length CD, Lucy Vincent will be touring extensively for the next year to bring the world ultimate joy through music.

  Let me get this right out of the way: Vermont transplants Lucy Vincent are ridiculously tight. There...Let me get this right out of the way: Vermont transplants Lucy Vincent are ridiculously tight. There's an overabundance of jam/groove/funk acts these days, but this trio's turn-on-a-dime musicality, honed in a Monday-night residency at Nectar's, is noteworthy.
  
  The band's self-titled debut is squarely aimed at the ball-cap and spaghetti-strap set. Unlike some of their contemporaries, however, Lucy Vincent pay more attention to song structure than extended noodling. No amorphous jams here, just airtight grooves flecked with acoustic and electric guitars and, believe it or not, flute.
  
  The group's upbeat groove-pop is built upon the solid foundation laid down by bassist Jordan Lee Berger and drummer Matt Rosenthal. Berger's bass lines are the epitome of precision; they're busy as hell but never upstage the song. Rosenthal is likewise meticulous; his kit work is well articulated and impeccably executed. Did I mention he also plays flute?
  
  Guitarist/vocalist Kelly Ravin delivers concise, intelligent guitar licks throughout the record. His plastic soul vocals present a squeaky-clean approximation of island vibrations. Ravin's musical personality is eminently likeable, and he should have no trouble winning college-age converts.
  
  Standout tracks include the math-funk opener "Boulevard of Fantasies," the reggae-drenched "Fasten Your Seatbelt," and the tom-tom heavy "In the Hills." The latter tune's flute-driven arrangement makes the band's acoustic-strumming peers sound like dorm-room amateurs.
  
  "Sticks and Stones" adds a progressive edge to the trio's hermetic grooves. It's almost too tight, however; I found myself hoping for just one misplaced note or botched fill. No such luck.
  
  Album closer "Someone Somewhere" is a catchpenny pop ditty that sounds like a cross between Blues Traveler and latter-day Hanson, but the easy-skankin' breakdown and thoughtful electric guitar solo are nice.
  
  Their seasoned musicianship gives their material a potency lacking in most feel-good rock. Hell, I enjoyed this disc a shitload more than any Jimmy Buffett record I've heard. Catch their CD release party on February 10 at Nectar's, with New Orleans funketeers Brotherhood of Groove.

  When it comes to listening to live music I’m all about knowing the songs. I’d rather listen to a co... When it comes to listening to live music I’m all about knowing the songs. I’d rather listen to a cover band in Faneuil Hall than a band I’ve never heard of playing their own tunes to a bunch of hippies in Central Square. Therefore the Stool tends to leave the hippy music scene to our friends at the Weekly Dig. However, last Thursday Night we has a Ms. Barstool event at Harpers Ferry and not only did I have a great time, but I heard a random local band that I thought was awesome. I haven’t been this impressed with an unknown band since I discovered and broke Rusted Root back in college. And therefore I want to be the first to say that I’m onboard the Lucy Vincent bandwagon.   -- Just arriving in Burlington from Martha's Vineyard is Lucy Vincent, not a singer-songwriter but a trio that plays upbeat, jazzy, acoustic-laden funk that might at times remind you of Rusted Root or Steely Dan or some other amalgamation leaning toward musical hodgepodge. The group, which just formed this summer, has moved to Burlington and will play at the venue where all up-and-coming world-jam-roots-rockers passing through town must play, Nectar's, at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday with opening act Billy Caldwell. Lucy Vincent then takes up residence at Nectar's every Monday through January. That bodes well -- the last band that had a Nectar's residency in January was Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, and they had a pretty good 2005. Free. 658-4771 or www.liveatnectars.com.

Setlist

Lucy Vincent likes to perform in one high energy set. The set is ALL original material with a few covers sprinkled in on the right occasion. Covers include Sublime, Stevie Wonder,Bob Marley, and Ani DiFranco.

Lucy Vincent can play anywhere from a 30min set to up to 2 1/2 hours of music. We are constantly adding new songs to our play list.

Lucy Vincent can also do completely ACOUSTIC gigs. We perform these sets with acoustic guitar, acoustic bass and percussion. We still prefer to amplify the instruments, but the overall volume is much lower and perfect for smaller settings like coffee houses or private homes.
