Biography

There are moments in life when everything clicks in to place and something powerful happens. The creation of brand new album, "Before I Set Sail", for The Rosie Burgess Trio was one of these moments. "The album seemed to totally write itself," Burgess recalls, "we made this album in a month! It's unheard of in my world to do anything that quickly, but somehow everything just fit together perfectly and nothing went wrong. It was just unbelievably calm waters and smooth sailing the whole way through."

And calmer waters is where Burgess now hopes to find herself. "The last few years have been so crazy. I've had enough ups and downs for a whole lifetime, and that's a bit what this album is about. It's the rising from the ashes, it's the moment where you finally get your head above the waves, it's the love and the life and everything in between that makes the journey so wonderful" she says.

Featuring Sam Lohs on stomp box drums, and Tim Bennett on bass guitar, this new collection of songs on "Before I Set Sail" showcase Burgess's effortlessly personable song writing and the band's strong connection as musicians and friends. "There is so much of all of us in this album." Burgess says. "Sam and Tim had a big hand in the arrangements and we all co-produced the album. They might be officially my songs but there's a real piece of each of us in every song."

Sometimes it’s hard to fit people into boxes, and the music being produced by The Rosie Burgess Trio is no exception. Sliding from folk to blues to gypsy-roots and back, the trio cross more genres than state borders, giving off "more energy than an illegally sparked firecracker" [Drum Media, Sydney], whilst still maintaining their unmistakable flavour.

And cross borders they do. Living primarily in airports and touring vans, the trio have been crisscrossing the world for the last three years, leaving behind them a trail of lost sunglasses, broken flip-flops and adoring audiences. Hailing from Melbourne, the trio bring their unique brand of folkroots to centre stage in a collection of catchy harmonies and off-beat humour.

After an incredible couple of years of touring, the Rosie Burgess Trio have had the pleasure of sharing the stage with some of the world’s finest artists. Highlight performances at festivals including Woodford Folk Festival (QLD), Port Fairy Folk Festival (VIC), California Worldfest (CA), and Musikfest (PA) have seen the trio firmly secure a place for themselves as festival favourites, both in Australia and North America.

With the release of the bands new album, The Rosie Burgess Trio have, yet again, raised the bar and are set to explode on the international stage.

  Indie acoustic/folk artist Rosie Burgess has released her third album, Wait For The World with a new...Indie acoustic/folk artist Rosie Burgess has released her third album, Wait For The World with a new band line up; including musicians such as Sam Lohs,(harmonies) Jimi Hocking(mandolin) and Sophie Kinston(violin).
  
  Rosie has came a long way since her previous release Humble Pie gaining national success, touring, running an Independent Grassroots Record Label, and working with two current musical projects, Rosie has been on the move.
  
  Although the acoustic/folk genre doesn’t regularly hit my playlist, when it does it is well enjoyed, and Rosie Burgess has slipped into it quite smoothly.
  
  There are some sound references to similar artists such as Missy Higgins, Angus & Julia Stone and of course Rosie Burgess’s individual sounds as well, which is refreshing to hear an acoustic artist with something new to offer.
  
  The musicianship captured throughout this album astonishes, with well crafted violin, cello, mandolin, harmonicas and piano lines throughout this monster fifteen tracker, Burgess has nailed down a solid album.
  
  Rosie offers you her views and experiences as you listen through, taking you from childhood moments to everyday situations, the way these ideas are expressed are charming and intriguing.
  
  Complimenting these great pieces of work is a well balanced example of sound production, raw sounds yet smooth to the ear.
  
  The album artwork is a nice simple piece of hand painted folk art which is thoughtfully printed on recycled cardboard (thankyou Rosie) in which you get a booklet including lyrics and photos of various musicians, cats and things.
  
  Inside this booklet you will also find out that Rosie is a supporting vegan, with “$1 from every copy of this cd will be donated to Animals Australia. I believe in saving animals from situations of cruelty and pain.”
  
  Overall the album is another beautiful collection of Rosie’s songs, definitely a worthwhile listen.

  Strung across folk, blues, and gypsy roots with a predisposition for stringed flavours (including guitar, mandolin, violin and cello) there is undeniable charm
  in every song. The tangible package hints at the journey
  Rosie wants to take you on, with a cherubic Russian Doll on the cover, her tummy resplendent from the
  earth as centre for a sunflower. Tis a lovely aesthetic and reveals the organic, upbeat album within. And
  Rosie Burgess delivers with girly vocals and womanly guiles.
  Her lyrics are poetic and, at times, enigmatic, thankfully without the emo introspection that is oft
  confused for mystique by your more, ‘wet behind the ears’ songwriters. From the campfire energy, complete with swinging harmonica, in Carried Her Bones Away, to the rollicking warmth of the riff that lifts Rosie’s ‘deepest secret’ in Back to The Centre, all songs have that gypsy quality of joy laid bare, with just enough
  darkness for the long roads ahead. And the calibre of musicians on the album, such as Sam Lohs of Fruit,
  and Jimi Hocking, are testimony to the musicianship of the artist by the company she keeps.

  country with some of our top acts for the past couple of years and now its Rosie’s time to shine in the spotlight - this has to be one of the most lovley & fresh discs on the market at the moment... without being bitchy, its really what you would expect from Missy Higgins, but the execution is better. (Sorry Missy)
  This disc takes all the elements of indie folk pop & slam
  dunks it on each track. A pure delight... and although its humble pie, we suggest gorging yourself on it!

  Rosie Burgess' 'Humble Pie' arrived in my letterbox as a surprise from my Editor. I like surprises a...Rosie Burgess' 'Humble Pie' arrived in my letterbox as a surprise from my Editor. I like surprises and this one was a lovely one. I was absolutely drawn into and captivated by this CD. On first listen, I decided it was a CD to chill to, play kindly in the background to unsuspecting dinner guests, music for the babies to play to, with its gentle instruments and poetic lyrics – its music to encourage movement – its blues and roots flavor deliciously strong.
  
  But each time I put it on, its more than an acoustic folk wonder, its songs contain thoughtful moments to consider, that draw you in, prod you to listen to the words, hear their message and perhaps consider putting them into action.
  
  Her MySpace declares “Rosie is also a passionate vegan, environmentalist and argumentatist...” and she is!
  
  Her CD, printed on recycled cardboard, lists the many millions of animals slaughtered, their living conditions and animals used for the whims of hungry people. As a girl under the heading of 'Gluten Free' with diagnosed Coeliac Disease a decade ago, the thought of further dietary constraints is not appealing but I must admit after reading the list and listening intently to the words of her songs I am currently considering giving up my carnivore ways.
  
  Rosie talks about “sitting on the fence” in her track 'Stomping Around' and perhaps we do need to choose a side, stop being contradictory in our ways – loose the label of “Miss Contrary” - the Mr Men book that, reading to my son the other day, I decided that unfortunately could be me and most of the people I know. Not many of us choose to follow strongly the path we head out on – we occasionally jump off when things are tricky, choose the easier, less bumpy and less controversial option – striving for a drama free world – perhaps not realising the drama we leave in our footsteps behind us.
  
  In my opinion, people like Rosie are rare, I think I have only ever spoke to or met half a dozen or so people like her in my entire life – who follow and embrace their beliefs with strength and conviction – not swayed by the dollar, promise of fame and fortune, not manipulated by television, society, and being a follower like the rest of the 'Sheep' in our world. Its hard being individual though – and I can understand why there are not many individuals out there - “sheep” mentality is the safer option
  
  A guitar, a harmonica and beautiful words. Rosie thanks the musicians who, she says within the Cardboard sleeve, “made it special with their touch.” - her CD 'Humble Pie' is sublime. Music played straight from the heart like this is something truly special and we as listeners should be thankful that we get to share the magic and hear the beauty.
  
  Her Bio says: “Rosie is the quirky girl you grew up with next door, who always had skinned knees, dirty toes, a tune in her head, her hands on your piano/guitar, and a penchant for disastrous adventures.”
  
  “As a young kid Rosie started writing poetry on scrap pieces of paper and then began to paste them into a book as the papers piled up. Nowadays she has a bookshelf full of these poems which she weaves into songs, providing intimate insights for her listeners into her unique view of the world.”
  
  Personally, I strive to remain open minded. I am a music lover with tolerance and thoughtful consideration of everyones point of view (instilled by the PR consultant experience of years past) and I think Rosie Burgess's CD 'Humble Pie' is amazing – 13 tracks to turn over in your mind and make you think – 50ish minutes of looking through the eyes of Rosie Burgess – for your consideration – you may not always agree with the view but I am certain you will enjoy her honest and soul-filled creations.
  
  And if the genre doesn't suit your musical tastes check out the artist Panika, Rosie's alter electro hip-hopper ego... I stumbled across some tracks as I briefly looked at Rosie's Myspace and it only cemented for me what an amazing artist she is – an acoustic / folk / indie / Hip Hop / Electro / Trip Hop one at that!

  When you have heard rosie perform, you’re sure to be tongue-tied trying to tell people how good she is (just tell them “go see her, you’ll be hooked”).
  
  I thoroughly admire rosie’s strength in playing original and often personal songs, that are unique and utterly captivating. And her style and voice are something that will transfix you, regardless of your musical tastes. I can thoroughly recommend you go hear rosie, and buy her CDs, because you won’t be disappointed, and missing out would leave you somehow less complete.
