Biography

Welcome to the world of Beaucoup Chapeaux.

Mark your calendars: Two excellent chances to see us in wonderfully acoustic settings in April and May--April 27th, we'll be at the Red Poppy Art House in San Francisco, CA, and on May 1, at the Nevada Theatre in Nevada City, CA.

Voted “Best Live Music in Nevada City”, the music of Beaucoup Chapeaux is created with accordion, violin, oboe, English horn, tenor guitar, plectrum banjo, clarinet, bass clarinet, piccolo, dobro, 5-string banjo, and voice. Based in and around Nevada City, California, “Beaucoup Chapeaux plays a mixture of music that oozes with joyful world overtones… If you like your music with an old world European quality and played straight from the hip with no excuses, look no further as this will be your cup-otea and then some!” --Mikail Graham, DJ, event and record producer, writing in KVMR Radio’s “Top Picks 2011” review.

Beaucoup Chapeaux’s origins began one fall morning in 2008, when the owner of a small French café in Nevada City heard Maggie McKaig singing and playing her accordion at the farmers market. A few months later, she invited Maggie to play in the café on Valentine’s Day. Maggie agreed, but said she would like to bring a few others to play with her. And so, she gathered two extraordinary musical friends and cohorts: Luke Wilson, with his tenor guitar, banjo, and dobro, and Murray Campbell, with his violin, oboe, and English horn. Despite blizzard conditions that shut down most of the county, people filled the café that snowy Valentine’s. The music was a big hit. The café owner was thrilled, and asked the trio, “Would you come play on Friday nights?” And so, we did.

A few weeks later, the very eclectic new music composer and musician Randy McKean was in the audience. After listening to the first set, McKean asked to sit in--he just happened to have his clarinet with him--and his bass clarinet too. We began to play, and the mix was by all accounts, magical. And so, McKean joined the band. With a wide array of musical backgrounds and instruments, the name Beaucoup Chapeaux, which means, roughly, “many hats”, seemed a good fit. Four years and 350 or more gigs later, with two tours throughout Northern California and the Pacific Northwest, we seem to be doing something right.

“Together we’re creating an atmosphere that some people call magic. It’s like a voyage every Friday. It’s alive!” --Genevieve Crouzet, owner, Nevada City Classic Café, in the the February 2013 Nevada City Advocate.

As so many who experience Beaucoup Chapeaux often express--Americans and European alike—hearing our band makes one feel like you've come upon the coolest café in Europe.

Along with our originals, inflected with our jazz to folk influences, our repertoire includes what we feel are gloriously haunting and wildly beautiful tunes from France, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Serbia, Macedonia, Russia, Bulgaria, Romania, as well as American jazz and folk music. We released our first CD in 2011, have sold out the 1000 copy first run, and are currently working on another for release later this year.

Audiences seem to adore us, and this music. We project a very authentic joie de vivre. Our café gig has become certainly one of the most, if not the most popular attractions on Friday nights in Nevada City. And it's not just about music, it's as much a community hub, the place locals bring their friends to, where they can experience the essence of the bustling and artsy community of Nevada City. That Beaucoup Chapeaux has become one of the most sought after groups for events in Nevada County, an area that overflows with incredible artists, is a testimony to our work and our dedication--and let's hope to our talent!

In the February 2013 edition of the Nevada City Advocate, journalist Laura Brown interviewed the aforementioned Mikail Graham about the band: "I think they are one of the great bands in the area,” Mikail went on to state that Beaucoup Chapeaux has reinvigorated the town’s local Friday night music scene beyond bar and dinner clubs. "There’s nobody else doing what they do and doing it with as much fun, gusto and just enjoyment as they do.”

In the same story, Sands Hall, an successful author, playwright, professor, and musician had this to say about us: “All in all, they are each one of them uniquely talented; as a collective, they are an astonishing juggernaut. What Beaucoup Chapeaux is up to in that little cafe helps knit our community."

We do all this in our little community, yes, and we do it wherever we play.

As one Facebook fan wrote: “This band is scary good -all virtuosos, all acoustic, they drive the teeming bistro bonhomie in a petit cafe and wherever they go.”

More sweet words:
"Swinging Sweetly:
There's a lot to like about this group, but the central idea seems to be fun. Some cuts are sentimental and even schmaltzy, but never to excess, and never without a touch of underlying grit. Go on, tap your feet, dance, you won't find a thing here to defeat that mood. When the sun's not shining, I play this CD and out it comes, in my car or in my kitchen. But at the same time, I'm left musing on deeper things too. Life's promises and disappointments to go with life's pleasures.

Not that any recording could beat seeing Beaucoup Chapeaux live in the exuberant, free-flowing, Friday night atmosphere of Nevada City's Classic Cafe. Still, we can't always be there, so here's a way to fill the gap."-- Bill Pieper, CD Baby reviewer.

---A very magical niche---
"Beaucoup Chapeaux has created a very magical niche with this music. It's a feel, an ambiance, something lovers can whisper behind and get up and dance to. It is so much Parisian Bistro or Italian Cafe, part Circus, and is very eccentric, and all of that, we love about it! Bravo, Beaucoup Chapeaux!" --Eleanore MacDonald, on CD Baby

And another:
"Wonderful lively music, reminiscent of the Greek tavernas I used to visit so long ago. Spirited and very professional close your eyes and enjoy!"--Parsons, on CD Baby

On with the accomplishments and accolades:

Our wonderful friend, the late and lamented Utah Phillips, very kindly introduced Luke and Maggie one time as "two of the finest musicians, singers, and songwriters performing today." Luke and Maggie were 2010 featured artists for the Nevada County Composers Cooperative, Premier Showcase Artists at the 2009 FARWest Folk Alliance Conference. Maggie's song, "War is a Business" was featured on a November 2010 edition of "Democracy Now". She was thrilled about that. Her instrumental, "Flora's Waltz," placed 6th out of 5000--that's right, 5000 entries for Best Celtic Instrumental in the Just Plain Folks 2009 Music Awards in Nashville, TN. Beaucoup Chapeaux's first CD, the 2011 release, "A Night at the Classic Café" was a 2011 KVMR Radio Top Pick. Then the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce voted us best live music in Nevada City. Very fun!

Maggie McKaig has performed with many very fine musicians including two time Grammy winner Mary Youngblood, Alasdair Fraser, Utah Phillips, Paul Kamm and Eleanore MacDonald, Emily Klion, George Brooks, Darcie Deaville, Ron Casat, Bill Eaglesham, Sands Hall, Peter Wilson, Ivan Najera and Bill Douglass. She gained much of her adventuresome spirit growing up roaming wild throughout California’s Santa Cruz Mountains. For many years she was primarily a guitarist, singer, and songwriter, having begun serious study and playing at 11 years of age. That adventuresome spirit and nearly insatiable curiosity have led her to play in accomplished fashion many genres of music: rock, folk, blues, classical, country, bluegrass, newgrass, Canadiana, Americana, Jazz, Celtic, and her current fascination, Euro Café/Gypsy Jazz.

A certified Orff Schulwerk teacher, for many years Maggie helped many hundreds of children discover their inner musician and performer in schools and summer theater camps in Northern California and Alberta, Canada.
For thirteen years she directed youth musical theater in San Francisco, CA, and was fortunate to work and perform with Miguel Santos, Monica Bermudez, Ricardo Diaz, Zakariya Diouf, Naomi Washington, Laura Elaine Ellis, Nader Shahin, Amina Goodyear, Susu Pampanin, Danny Duncan, Mestre Beicola, Mary Dollar, Jo Krieter, Aunty Linda Pi'ilani, Carlos Gonzalez, Ed Holmes, Janet Koike, Carolyn Brandy, Michelle Jordan, and Nat Keefe, among others. She has also performed on street corners, ships, beaches, mountain tops, cafés, tavernas, pubs, attics, basements, barns, bars, museums, cemeteries, peace marches, benefits of all kinds, on many festival and concert stages.

Maggie now devotes herself entirely to writing essays, music, and playing music, and when not doing that, takes care of a five acre farm and catering to the whims of a 35 year old horse, three dogs, and two cats. And a husband too. She also has a WordPress blog, "Maggie's Notes and Peregrinations: Farm Tales and Musical Tours".

Quite active in the Nevada City, CA community where she makes her home, Maggie and her partner of many years, Luke Wilson, who have lately taken up Tango dancing, are perhaps most proud of their two very fine grown sons.

Oshawa, Ontario born Luke P. Wilson has been performing for more than 40 years. He spent the early 1970's in England and Europe, and recorded an album with partner Jesse P. Morin for Capitol Records called "Peaceful Company". During his two years in the UK, Luke performed with all sorts of interesting musicians, notably Major Wiley.

From 1974-1985, Luke performed with many of top Canada's top folk, country, and country blues musicians such as Valdy, Diamond Joe White, Ian Tyson, Ken Hamm, members of Prairie Oyster, Ron Casat, and Bill Eaglesham. One of Calgary's top session players from 1976-1985, he recorded dozens of commercials, and played on many albums. His own bands included Buckdancer's Choice and Lost in the Colonies, and he was also a member of the Backline Orchestra.

In California, Luke has performed with a wide variety of musicians. Aside from his longtime partner Maggie, Luke has added lent his extraordinary sensibilities to the music of Utah Phillips, Alasdair Fraser, Saul Rayo, Kimberly Bass, Sands Hall, and many, many more. As has often been said, Luke is a musical secret weapon. His improvisational skills are legendary. Luke also works as a record producer, and has helped midwife dozens of albums to life. For over 35 years, he has worked as a luthier, building, repairing, and restoring stringed instruments in his shop, Wolfnote Studio.

From Carlops, Scotland, Murray Campbell moved to Nevada County early in 2005, and has performed and recorded with many Northern Californian musicians since. His brilliance playing on violin, oboe, and English horn has added to the work of Paul Kamm and Eleanor MacDonald, Alasdair Fraser, Kipchoge Spencer, Issac James, Vermillion Lies, the Belfry Brothers, ChickenBonz, and Randy McKean's ew music ensemble Bristle, with Lisa Mezzacappo and Cory Wright. Murray also plays in Mezzacappo's String Band. Having been both traditionally and classically trained as a musician in Scotland, Murray also studied in the Hague for a number of years, and currently performs with both the Auburn Symphony and the North State Symphony Orchestra.

Making his home on the North San Juan Ridge area of Nevada County, CA, Murray also holds a B.Sc degree in mathematical physics.
Just for fun.

And last, but certainly not least:

Iowa born Saxophonist/clarinetist/composer Randy McKean has performed with rockers Poi Dog Pondering, David Rice and Teratoma, took part in the premiere performance of MacArthur Genius award recipient Anthony Braxton's Tri-Centric Orchestra at the Kitchen in New York City, and has toured Taiwan as part of James Fei's alto saxophone quartet.

His most recent activities include his new music ensemble, Bristle, which includes Campbell, as well as Lisa Mezzacappo, and Cory Wright. In 2012, Randy's piece, "Orchestrium", was performed by the Music in the Mountains Symphony Orchestra in a collaboration with the Nevada County Composers Cooperative, of which he is a member. Randy is also a member of the performance collective Gardyloo; noise improv trio Me & Alex Ross, with guitarist Ross Hammond and percussionist Alex Jenkins; avant-folk duo GraVIE, with Murray Campbell; the chamber jazz duo Off Center, with guitarist David Dvorin; and appearances with Alex Jenkins, Sound Immersion, Ludi Hinrichs, and Dan Plonsey's ensemble Daniel Popsicle. Other performance/recording credits include work with Gregg Bendian, Don Byron, Mark Dresser, Debris, Phil Haynes, Kevin Norton, Gino Robair, and Herb Robertson. Randy's CD's, aside from Beaucoup Chapeaux, include So Dig This Big Crux (Rastascan) and, with the Great Circle Saxophone Quartet, Child King Dictator Fool (New World), and Bristle's "Bulletproof" (Edgetone Records)

Randy received a B.A. in Jazz Studies from Coe College, where he studied with Paul Smoker, and an M.A. in Music Composition from Mills College, where he studied with Anthony Braxton, David Rosenboom, and Maggi Payne. He has lived and worked in the San Francisco Bay Area and New York City.

Since 2002, Randy and his family call Grass Valley, CA, home, where he and his wife Lindsay try to keep up with their two very talented and active teenagers.
