Biography

Tim Mann, singer-songwriter and guitarist, brings a sound steeped in musical heritage and powerful insight. Since moving to New England in 1996, Tim has continued to produce a catalog of material that combines a love of roots music with a cutting edge lyricism driven by strong imagery and a keen sense
of melodic tradition.

It is not easy to blend inspirations such as Pink Floyd, Bob Dylan, and The Beatles into a single style of music and still retain a sense of originality, but Tim Mann does it. His is the kind of music that somehow seems both familiar and refreshing. There is enough nostalgia to make you think back to the early days of rock and roll, yet there is no denying that his style is fresh and inspired.

Mann borrows heavily from the classic rock genre and the era of the British Invasion, and then adds a dose of late '60s and early '70s country rock. He binds all of this together with a contemporary sound, one that is enhanced by his lyrics and instruments like the ukulele, an instrument currently experiencing a strong revival.

Mann is already on his third CD release, 'Distant Strangers'; his first full-length solo project. For this project, he has used the ukulele to perform a number of acoustic-based pop songs. He has also incorporated a lo-fi approach with professional sounding production. Mann used three different studios to record the project, including his own at home.

On 'Distant Strangers', Mann has some help from some of New England's finest musicians, including Greg Hawkes (The Cars) and Zack Hickman (Josh Ritter).
As founding members of 'Ukulele Noir', a widely successful New England troupe, Hawkes and Mann have set a new standard for the little Hawaiian instrument. In 2006, they opened for Ukulele wizard Jake Shimabukuro.

The merger of the past and present is a recipe that has been tested and proven several times throughout the course of modern music history. Recent interest in stripped down and unplugged music also bodes well for Mann's style. His inspiration comes in the form of what he calls pure music: strong melodies, catchy hooks, introspective lyrics, well-crafted chord changes, and simple production.
