Epoch Failure...the product of a lifetime of failing on the road to success.

From Failure comes success...Epoch Failure is the collaborative effort between musical savant, composer and writer, singer Billy Joe Marrero and hip hop artist/lyricist Mickey Knoxx (Nick Young). The two artists decided to merge their individual styles into one combined dynamic musical outfit. Epoch Failure's music at it's root is hip-hop, but we don't want to be classified as hip hop/rap artists. In a world where people are constantly trying to fill a niche... we are an abstraction of several niches. The lyrics in our songs come from the hard lives that we've both had to lead, and the hard mistakes we've both had to make...but from failure comes success....and Epoch's will be epic!

INDIVIDUAL BIOS:

MICKEY KNOXX:

aka Nick Young, 28, has been grinding on the New Jersey hip hop scene since the age of 16. Knoxx has lived in various locales on the east coast, he's lived in almost every state on the eastern seaboard, some even twice, and his music reflects that. "Every bar is a gem...you may not get it on the first listen...but after the second or third time you begin to unwind the intricacy of what I'm saying" Knoxx says.

Knoxx has released several mixtapes over the years, but due to work, family and life's obligations...was never able to follow thru with success. His ambition is immense, dream big, and get as close as possible to the dream as you can in reality. All in all Knoxx is a lyricist, who in his own words puts "intelligent thoughts, translated into everyday speech, and then places it over a beat that everyone can nod along too." Sounds like a recipe for success.

Knoxx is a late riser, but be warned he's no sleeper. Fathered by an unlucky MoTown singer/writer, and a mother brought up singing Gospel in the church, who are also not-so distant relatives to some of music history's greatest artists. Some things you grow into, Knoxx was born into the entertainment industry.

BILLY JOE : aka Billy Joe Marrero, 24, Born in Camden, New Jersey and 1of 5 boys in a single parent home, Billy is no stranger to challenges. Billy was either to small for sports or too ambitious for the street life, he never seemed to fit in properly. Then he found music, composing his first song before was out of middle school, Billy had found his calling.

He then attended Creative Arts H.S in Camden, taking theater, dance, and music .Billy was so talented, that when ABC's 20/20 came to town they chose to profile him and his family's plight in their special on ABC. People all over the country were touched by his story to the point where he was next, picked for an Extreme Makeover Home Edition. The rest has been an amazing journey filled with close calls and near victories.

The work ethic of Billy Joe is unmatched by most "artists" the songs that he has in his hard drive from years ago would ...once they hit the right set of ears...potentially sell like crazy.

Now, that Billy has teamed with Knoxx things seem to be picking up and the future is only as bright as the talent they possess.

  This is one of those rare reviews where I’m going to start with the worst aspects of these cats and go from there, but after that it’s all uphill, so stay with me here. You may have noticed that these gentlemen bill themselves as both Hip Hip and Pop. Fair enough. The sin comes when they suggest that we might want to refer to them as “Hip-Pop”. No. NO NO NO. That phrase has been used as a perjorative for years to describe awful, watered-down, MTV-driven hip hop carpet-bagging, and the very mention of the phrase in a positive sense makes me cringe, expecting a mighty body blow of MC Hammer-esque crossover rap adorned in R’n’B hooks.
  
  
  
  The great news is, that is exactly what you won’t find with these cats. Their hip hop is straight up, unadulterated street anthem ish, complete with banging beats, nice flows, and rap-along choruses.
  
  
  
  Sure, their vocal stylings draw a little too much influence from Jigga at times, but there are worse sins in the hip hop game than a pinch of swagger-jacking, and if you’re going to steal, steal from the best. Their lyrics are standard fare – splitting time between talking about how tough it was coming up as a kid in the city, how dope they are now, and how much the ladies love them, but it beats some affected conscious style or an album full of raps about how to sell crack.
  
  
  
  Beatwise, they’ve managed to get their hands on some pretty dope production. The samples are left of center enough to avoid the “generic” label, which is a feat unto itself these days, especially if you’re billing yourself as Hip-Pop (*wince*). They wisely avoid the slow, introspective sound so popular in the underground the last few years and roll with beats you can rock in the club, the ride, or the crib.
  
  
  
  Final analysis: I have to give these cats some real love – the last several listens were even better than the first, although to be fair, that first listen was colored by the phrase “Hip Pop” bouncing around in my cerebellum. I’d recommend them to anyone who digs post-millennium hip hop, both major label and Indie. They’re just fun to listen to in that way that hip hop used to be – not too poppy, but all about having a good time, and living proper while there’s living to do. Plus, they cut up a Notorious B.I.G. line in one of their songs and gave him a co-writing credit. What’s not to love about that?
