Biography

Charlotte, North Carolina’s Wicked Jones exists at the crossroads where the inspirations for Guns N’ Roses and Al Green intersect. Finding such a mysterious junction may make your GPS freeze up in utter confusion, but it exists, trust me. Robert Johnson may not have sold his soul to the devil there, but he’d likely feel right at home along this freestyle freeway. This is because Wicked Jones creates hard rock with soul. (Or was that soul that rocks hard?) And before you scoff at the notion, ask yourself this sincere question: Was Jimi Hendrix a rock star or a soul singer? (If you answered “both”, you’ve proven my point).

The four-piece consists of Gregoria “G” D’Voldre on lead vocals, Jason Sossoman (guitar, vocals), Jack Kitchen (bass, vocals), and Calvin “Manny” Carter at the drums. And when this quartet comes together, it makes music about as romantic as a serial killer. Take “Sinister Love”, for example. On it “G” sings: “Sinister love/Give me your heart/Give me your blood.” This love interest might be falling into the arms of a passionate lover. Then again, she may be headed straight for the sticky trap of a spider’s web.

The group was a trio that Sossoman fronted in 2007 when “G” joined the band. “G” says hearing Ozzy Osbourne’s wildly passionate singing in Black Sabbath initially helped inspire him to recognize the infinite possibilities of combining metal power with soul passion. Most every Wicked Jones song begins with an animalistic “G” R&B scream, which is then followed by plenty of hard rock energy. But Sossoman’s blues-y slide guitar, which helps introduce “Some Highway Head”, is evidence that this is more than a one soul-man show. Furthermore, Kitchen’s bass is borderline funky, and the fact that Calvin “Manny” Carter drums at church more than proves his groove credentials.

While Black Sabbath mock praised the Ruler Of Darkness, Wicked Jones consistently expresses one wicked jones for the flesh. “G” explains “Some Highway Head” by stating: “The only way to explain this song is sex, drugs, and rock n’ roll.” And the aptly titled “Supernatural Flesh”, which was partly inspired by Christina Ricci’s sex-addicted role in Black Snake Moan, is a song that “describes a young lady who has strong desires and nobody around her knows it yet,” “G” explains.

Just as it’s tough to pinpoint on a map where Wicked Jones is coming from musically, it’s equally nearly impossible to give them a stylistic label. But any good chef will tell you that the only way to create new dishes is to take wild liberties with a wide palate of ingredients. So with Wicked Jones, what they’ve brought to the table is a whole new delicious flavor.

  With Halloween on the horizon comes the rise in candy sales and tacky lawn décor, but for more “liberal” adults Halloween has become a holy haven of dirty deeds. A night solely dedicated to mischievous meanderings accompanied by scantily clad women follow by a wicked cackle of pleasure. Sounds like a porn? But, alas Halloween is a night where values are thrown out window with the stale cigarette butts. In preparation for an eve of sinful pleasure grace your ears with the soul-industrial rock sound of Wicked Jones.
  
  Wicked Jones has entered the music scene with their soul-sung, erotic lyrics and their fast flying metal riffs to produce their first EP “Supernatural Flesh.” Their talents not only lie with their instruments, but in the studio as well. The four-some not only engineered a new sound fusion of soul and industrial rock, but produced their own album.
  
  Gregoria “G” D’Voldre (lead vocals), Jason Sossoman (guitar, vocals), Jack Kitchen (bass, vocals), and Calvin “Manny” Carter (drums) make up the rhythmic spun web of Wicked Jones. The guys met in past music endeavors, but decided to form Wicked Jones in hopes of stardom. They were a three-some until “G” joined the band which added a soulful spin to their music. He claims that Ozzy Osborne’s voice stirred within him a desire to sing.
  
  “We went to the strip club to make the band official,” Sossoman said.
  
  Of course, every band needs their night of initiation, and what a better night of male bonding?
  
  Their influences include: Alice in Chains, Clutch, Corrosion of Conformity, Down, Guns N’ Roses, Primus and Al Green.
  
  “My favorite guitarist’s are Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Ted Nugent and Zakk Wylde” Sossoman said.
  
  “Eric Avery, Les Claypool, John Paul Jones; I’ve always loved the tones and styles they have” Kitchen said.
  
  Their hodgepodge of influences can be heard within their sound making it hard to pinpoint a label for their sound. The group describes themselves as, “If Alice in Chains, Down, Sevendust and Al Green had a baby.” As ugly as that baby may be, it is irrefutable that the baby would have talent and that is exactly what these guys have concocted.
  
  Kitchen describes their band as “soulfully explosive rock with a nice southern touch.”
  
  Their favorite show that they played was with Flyleaf at Ziggy’s, a former music venue in Winston-Salem.
  
  “It was one of the last shows before the legendary place went down” Kitchen said. “It was packed and full of energy that night”
  
  “The Ziggy’s show opening up for Flyleaf was packed and the crowd was in a state of frenzy during our performance” “G” said.
  
  Kitchen and “G” explain their goals for the band, “To get signed to a decent record deal with guaranteed promotion and tour support; traveling all over the world performing live 300 or more days out of every year”
  
  “One thing I would like to mention and that is we recorded this music live; mainly one takes and I think it’s important that people (our fans) as well as other musicians know this” Jason said.

This four-piece band has just produced a explosive CD and every tune on it just plain jams. It is hard rock, metal and southern rock all wrapped up in a tight package just waiting to get out but it definitely has soul. If you can’t feel it you are dead.
  
  This CD is full of one liners and sexual references but it is really entertaining. It does have the heavy industrial rock metal vocals that will tear your head off but it is more controlled than on most metal CD’s today. They mix it up with some cool rhythm and some funky bass by Jack Kitchen. Calvin “Manny” Carter does some masterful drum work on the whole CD. It is hard to place who their influences are but I guess you can take your pick. It all works.
  
  “Supernatural Flesh” is the best one on the CD. It even hit number one on the MP3 charts. It seems that this girl has fooled the preacher man. The lyrics say it all “Virgin? Right. Only studying Sex after school”. This chicks parents don’t have a clue. The next cool tune is “Some Highway Head” and you can just guess what this is about. The moaning guitar really adds to this song and the singer, Gregoria “G” D’Voldre is just exceptional. “Sinister Love” is just wicked. The solo guitar on this song is bad ass and you really feel what Jason Sossoman is feeling.
  
  If this is their first release I hate to see what else they will have down the road. This is a must in your collection and it is in my player every chance I need a head-nodding boost."

  provocative metaphors. These guys have either managed to
  incorporate what seems like an eclectic mix of genre influences
  or they’re musically confused. Either way, it works.
  Over-the-top lyrics full of sexual innuendos and witty one-liners,
  it’s entertaining, and just the right length. Raw ‘70s and ‘80s
  rock-and roll is definitely the heaviest influence on this album,
  but keep listening and you’ll see past the modern day Alice in
  Chains. Towards the end of one of the tracks, where one would
  assume to be a lull, it breaks out into a breakdown. I’m talking
  post-hardcore trend-of-today, metal vocals with a riff I haven’t
  heard since the last Everytime I Die release. Yet parts of the
  album contain notes that bring a little class and soul to the table.
  Do not mistake classy rock for classic rock: This is an album
  for the progressive-industrial experimental rock-and-roll-loving
  music enthusiasts of today.

  Usually when I get a MySpace request from another band, I'll click on their page, see where they're from, listen to a few notes, hit the back button, choose yes or no and go about my business. I always have the intentions to listen later, but rarely do.
  
  That is until today, when Charlotte rockers Wicked Jones invited me in and made me stop everything I was doing — pretty impressive one hour before deadline.
  
  The band is tight and lead singer "G" D'Voldre switches between hardcore metal screams and soulful crooning impeccably. It's no wonder they got to play with Flyleaf.
