Mark Nicholas

Genre: Electronic/Dance/DJ
Secondary Genre: Alternative Detroit, Michigan USA Contact

Mark Nicholas has drawn comparisons to Nine Inch Nails, Prodigy and Depeche Mode, but, like most satisfying new music, it’s generally difficult to categorize. For this reason, Mark created his own sub-genre name, dubbing his sound "Dirty Electronic".

Artist Information

Biography

Mark Nicholas is a Detroit-based electronic musician, once well-known only in the underground Synthpop community as the man behind the band Cosmicity. Cosmicity was active from 1994-2003. Now recording under his given name, Mark has shed the confines of pristine, 80's-influenced Synthpop for a modern hybrid electronic sound – a sound he calls Dirty Electronic.. In fact, it's not only a cool name for his sub-genre of electronic music - it's also the name of his brand new record label.

There’s nothing pristine or elegant about the sound of the synthesizers and drum machines you’ll hear on Mark’s debut album under Dirty Electronic banner, named “Duchess 33” (released February 6th, 2007). In fact, everything’s just a little bit filthy, from the production straight through to the lyrics. Distortion-washed… clipped… crushed… and divine.

DJs and club-goers have already gravitated toward the tracks "Two Sandwiches", "Perverse", and "Coming Clean", however, the runaway fan-favorites are "I Wish", "I'm Trying To Impress You", and "Backlash", the latter of which was a finalist in the John Lennon Songwriting contest in 2006.

“Duchess 33” has drawn early comparisons to Prodigy and Depeche Mode, but, like most satisfying new music, it’s generally difficult to categorize. A recent fan e-mail to Mark probably says it best:

“Dude, seriously… the new songs kick ass! …it has elements of Goldfrapp, Nine Inch Nails, and even DM, yet it sounds very unique.”

Instrumentation

Mark Nicholas does it all: songwriting, programming and vocals.

For live shows Mark's wife, DJ Ginger Snapp, joins him to assume mixing duties on the pre-recorded tracks and sing live Vocoder parts.
