Take the instrumentation of Loreena McKennitt, add the vocal power of Sinead O’Connor, and mix in the rock of the Cranberries, and you have Mythica. Featuring rock arrangements of traditional Irish tunes, and award-winning original songs, each performance by Mythica is infused with electricity and raw emotion.

Formed in 2005, Mythica is one of the most unique, intriguing, and eclectic Celtic Rock Fusion bands in the U.S. today. Collectively wielding over a dozen instruments, Mythica pushes the boundaries of Celtic music by blending it with rock, bluegrass, funk, jam, Hawaiian, even South American surf rock. (In other words, Mythica ain't your average Celtic band!)

Mythica is one of just a few bands in the U.S. that plays a hurdy gurdy, a rare instrument circa 1100 from France, with its roots in the Celtic nation of Brittany. Among the many fiddles and bagpipes, the hurdy gurdy stands out and captivates listeners with its unique sound and mechanics.

  Vicarious is the first full length CD by Mythica and it's a pretty sophisticated product for such a ...Vicarious is the first full length CD by Mythica and it's a pretty sophisticated product for such a young band. Not only are we treated to keyboard heavy progressive rock inspired arrangements, but all of the material included here is original, most of it composed by band member Melissa Cox. The traditional/ethnic flavor in Mythica's music is supplied by folk-ish sounding melodies, and lead instrumental lines played by mandolin, violin, and/or uillean pipes. Actually, "Just Kidding" is a lively jazz/rock flavored instrumental with uillean pipes playing the main melody. Reminds me of the legendary Irish band Moving Hearts.
  
  But most of this CD is taken up by songs featuring lead vocals from Cox, who in her more passionate moments, as on "My Magdalane," sounds like a cross between Jefferson Airplane's Grace Slick and Loreena McKennitt.
  
  "Tolkien's Fever," is a change from the Celtic flavor of most of this CD. It's a tuneful bluegrassy romp that stomps along nicely and has exuberant violin and mandolin breaks. Angelic vocal harmonies, too. My favorite track here, along with "Just Kidding."
  
  Mythica aren't over the top avant garde, but their particular kind of progressive and folk blend isn't being practiced by too many bands right now. The only other acts that strike me as at all similar are Loreena McKennitt and Jennifer Cutting's Ocean Orchestra.
  
  So if you enjoy a sophisticated, highly arranged approach to roots music, then do check out Mythica.
