Biography

Canadian multi-instrumentalist, Dan Walsh is already well known for his collaborations with a number of talented musicians. He’s added his bluesy-bluegrass signature style to two dozen albums and toured across North America, Europe and Australia.

For many years Walsh was a key member of Fred Eaglesmith’s band, The Flying Squirrels, where he played more than a couple of hundred gigs a year and shared the stage with the likes of Willie Nelson, Willie P. Bennett,Toby Keith, Kelly Joe Phelps and the Del McCoury Band. Lately he’s been touring the country with noted singer-song writer Brock Zeman and appears on his latest album (The Bourbon Sessions), produced by Walsh & Zeman

Now, at long last, we get Walsh solo with Diesel & Smokes (Busted Flat Records), the first release where the spotlight falls on Walsh’s instrumental genius. But in true Walsh style, his original compositions with dobro, lap steel and electric, baritone and acoustic guitars (and more) are not at all showy, but understated, moody -- and mesmerizing.

Tracks like “White Knuckle” infuse an old timey rhythm and melody cycle with a contemporary aesthetic. “Geary Street,” on the other hand, showcases his bent for folk-rock with echoes of the Allman Brothers and the Grateful Dead, while “Spark Plug” has a clear blues inflection.

Exclaim! magazine has already praised Diesel & Smokes: “The multi-talented Dan Walsh paints a vivid sonic picture of the touring life on his all-instrumental debut... Walsh’s adeptness at playing multiple instruments on each track...renders the organic sound of the recording all the more remarkable. Musician, Corb Lund says of Walsh’s sound: "Walshy is awesome. I've played with him lots and he's on everybody's record and he's always tasty as hell."

There is a seamless flow throughout Walsh’s instrumental compositions on Diesel & Smokes, and the production shows there’s nothing and nowhere to hide. There’s no slicked up, pumped up or pimped out production here, but a naked organic sound that highlights Walsh’s warm strings. Diesel & Smokes is intimate without being self indulgent.

  vivid sonic picture of the touring life on his all-instrumental debut, recorded around Lake Erie and
  in “various motels throughout the southern United States.” First track “Geary Street” begins, suitably, with the sound of a car starting, and what follows is
  an earnest journey through Walsh’s musical influences
  and history. Whether leading the spry country-shuffle of “White Knuckle,” the old school honky tonk of the alarmingly titled “Swingin’ Johnson” or the blues rock of “Spark Plug,” Walsh’s adeptness at playing multiple instruments on each track (including, but not limited
  to, guitar, bass, drums, dobro and piano) renders the organic sound of the recording all the more
  remarkable. The aptly named “Lonely Road” closes the
  album in modestly epic fashion, a 9-plus minute thematic sweep that is a fine showcase for Walsh’s

  Kitchener songstress Lynn Jackson’s second album, the follow-up to 2004’s well-received Night Songs,...Kitchener songstress Lynn Jackson’s second album, the follow-up to 2004’s well-received Night Songs, is an effortlessly laidback collection marked throughout by an air of elegant simplicity. Recorded “in a cozy little shack on Lake Erie,” such graceful austerity lends itself well to Jackson’s particular hybrid of folk/country/blues. Co-produced with renowned multi-instrumentalist Dan Walsh (Fred J. Eaglesmith), Sweet Relief’s straightforward arrangements provide the ideal setting for Jackson’s similarly unpretentious lyrics and lilting vocals. Word and voice come together particularly well on the elegiac ballad “The End,” written for the late Matt Osborne, as well as on “Raining on Our House,” a plaintive tale of a broken spirit. And, though Jackson’s higher-register voice sometimes seems at odds with some of the blues-ier fare on offer, it is well-suited to the upbeat country rock treatment given Leonard Cohen’s “Tower Of Song” and the sweet country lament of “Forecast.” For his part, Walsh offers effective musical accompaniment on every song here, whether playing guitar, dobro or drums (to name a few). Canadian folk legend Willie P. Bennett also appears on seven of Sweet Relief’s 11 tracks — his harmonica and mandolin playing adding timely atmospheric touches throughout this understated gem.

  electro-polished finish feels very smooth on your finger, almost glass-like. It has great balance, with just enough weight
  for BIG TONE. This is the slide to get, and should be in every player’s gig bag.” “These things are beautiful,” says Dan Walsh of the Fred Eaglesmith Band, another instant fan of Planet Waves slides. “The Martin Simpson slide fits me like a glove. I’ve generally used glass slides, but after using the Martin Simpson last night, I’m gonna change!   Brad Fernquist, guitarist for Michelle Branch, echoed Walsh’s sentiments: “The Planet Waves slide is great! It feels really good and is very easy to play.” Guitarist Mark Selby also had praise for Planet Waves slides, stating, “I really dig the Martin Simpson slide – it’s definitely got the best ‘singing’ tone of any metal slide I’ve come across in years. The weight and feel of this slide are great, too.”
  With these kinds of accolades piling up in a scant six months, it’s plain to see that Planet Waves has a hit on its hands with its new guitar slides.
