Biography

Hailing from Nashville Tn & the Carolinas, SwampDaWamp is the powerful and creative collaboration of six talented and seasoned musicians: Gig Michaels (lead vocals & acoustic guitar); David Lee (drums); Laney Strickland (guitar & vocals); Keith Inman (guitar); Joe Boogie (keyboards, B3 & vocals); and Rich Basco (bass).
Five years and 4 records later, SwampDaWamp is ready to get those fires burning again with Short Stories From A Long Road. Gig Michaels is back with his from the gut vocals and his self- helping lyrics, coming to the table with a full deck ready to deal on rocking blues tracks like “Sweet Disease” and “Do Things.” The SwampDaWamp train just keeps rolling down the tracks with straight up southern flavored rock and plenty of blues licks in the mix to keep fans with many tastes interested. The band mixes an appealing blend of modern rock, classic rock, blues and modern country that has no age barriers, nor demands a musical preference on their listeners. With big hitting themes like anti-bullying from the track “Fat Boy Can Jam” to soft healing, tear jerkers like “Happy Anniversary”, the Swamp boys are making their way into commercial success like never before without trying, just being who they are.
SwampDaWamp has signed on with SRS Records, UK, and a summer tour is scheduled to begin in July 2012 at the famous Borough Theatre in Abergavenny, UK, the same stage where The Beatles were to become recognized and thrust on to world stardom. Swampdawamp is the brainchild of vocalist Gig Michaels. This guy has grown up on a steady diet of Marshall Tucker, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, Charlie Daniels, Little Feat, Blackfoot and the Allman Brothers. He wears his influences on his sleeve. Gig posses a gravely deep voice that has little range but who the fuck cares. It sounds perfect on this album.
  
  Most people have written Southern Rock off as a laugh but the truth is this is a 100% American genre of music that gave us some of the most talented American musicians in the history of music. Now, I would not put Swampdawamp in that category but I would say that they are carrying on the legacy of Southern Rock with fire, passion and most importantly solid, kick ass music. This is a solid band that puts it all out on the table for you to take part in.
  
  The best song on the album is by far “The River.” This one has it all, the organ, the guitar, the pounding rhythm and the lead breaks that are loud, blasting out of a Marshall amp. Other songs that are to be checked out are “I’m Feeling Saturday” and “Birthday.” “Blind Crippled and Crazy” is another standout. Hell, check em all out and have a Pabst.
  
  Remember the days when you used to go into a record store and discover a band you had never heard before? You would pick up the album and wonder if it was any good. You would look at the track listing and decide on a whim that you would buy it. This is one of those albums. Check it out. You won’t be disappointed.   There's nothing complex about SwampdWamp's self-titled debut; these are simple, straightforward songs about down-home, down-to-earth things, and nary a song goes by without mentioning alcohol, cars, women or good times with good friends. Lead vocalist Gig Michaels cites influences such as Lynyrd Skynyrd and Joe Cocker, and the band's Myspace page also lists The Black Crows, Kid Rock, Louis Armstrong and others. Produced by Joe Boyland (Lynyrd Skynrd, B Co., Nazareth), the CD is a veritable jambalaya of Southern rock, funk and a little but of everything else, just for kicks.
  
  "Miss Becky" and "Blind, Crippled, and Crazy" cover both sides of the "songs about women" spectrum, with the former being more lighthearted (both musically and lyrically), and the latter being more heartfelt and sincere as Gig pleads with his girl to "stay inside and make love all day." Friends and family are also common themes here; "I'm Feelin' Saturday" is a tribute to partying it up, with passing references to Cabo Wabo and bar rooms, and "Sunday Southern Tradition" name checks everything from grease pits to NASCAR as it conjures up images of barbecuing in the back yard. Even "The River", a song about suicide, represents death through the common image of one less plate on the kitchen table. One notable thematic exception is "Tastes Like Chicken to Me", which contrary to what the title might suggest is actually a more serious statement about flooding in New Orleans, and one more reason to knock one back in memory of bad times that have passed us by.

  SWAMPDAWAMP was formed in the spring of 2006 when singer/songwriter Gig Michaels and drummer David Lee recorded a slate of new songs in their studio in Charlotte, North Carolina. David Lee used the demo to recruit guitarist Marty Hill, who added his touch to the tracks.
  
  Michaels sent the tape to Joe Boyland, (Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bad Co., Nazareth, etc.) who agreed to produce the band. In addition to Marty, the guys added B3 organist and pianist Duke Rivers, bassist Robbie Hegler and guitarist Michael Hough, and headed to Nashville to start recording the album at Seventeen Grand Studios. The result - a blend of classic rock meets Southern funk which captures musicians displaying terrific command of their respective instruments having a penchant for the art of skilled song-writing.

  Swampdawamp lead singer Gig Michaels calls their sound a blend of classic, southern, and alternative rock. When it all comes together it sounds like a roots-blues-rock blend that finds its place somewhere in between the sounds of Lynyrd Skynrd and the Allman Brothers-an infectious unforgettable sound.
  
  Swampdawamp sings about backyard barbeques, NASCAR, and everything that makes up a culture born and raised in the south.   With a tongue twister of a name like Swampdawamp you may not know what to expect for music. I figure...With a tongue twister of a name like Swampdawamp you may not know what to expect for music. I figured it had to be at least southern flavored, and I was partially right. This band plays rock and blues and their sound is something like the Allman Brothers meets Lynyrd Skynyrd or some facsimile thereof. Ok enough with the comparisons and trying to figure who and what they sound like, when the day is done they create a sound that is all their own.
  
  Gig Michaels has a hefty whiskey like vocal style that lends itself nicely to the lyrics and the sounds the band generates. Right at the outset “I’m Feelin’ Saturday” sets the tone and they grab hold and take control of the steering wheel, never once veering off track. As they move through each track you become increasingly entertained and engrossed in what they have to offer.
  
  The one track that really says who they are lyrically and musically is “Sunday Southern Tradition.” It is all about backyard barbeques and pretty girls and the thrill of NASCAR racing. The south is veracious in their appetite for racing and the culture that has grown up with the sport. This tune tells the tale. It all sounds so darn real when you listen to the Swampdawamp wailing blues-rock machine pump out the music and Michaels starts churning out those vocal workouts. Then they hand out a “Little Pill Called The Truth” with a little ditty called “Tastes Like Chicken To Me.” This is a play on words and more than hints that what we are going through in Iraq right now tastes an awful like the last go round we had in Vietnam, accept this is much more complicated and difficult to get out of, but in the end it still taste like chicken. Yup, I heard that message loud and clear.
  
  This is a very entertaining CD in many ways and well worth your time to check it out. If you have a hankerin’ for the blues-rock southern style, I have just the ticket for you, a little old band called Swampdawamp. You may not be able to say it or spell but you sure you can hear it.
