TROUBADUO SET TO HEADLINE ACOUSTIC JAMFEST 4
by Donnie G.
On Saturday, June 26th, Acoustic Jamfest 4 will be held at The Local Shack, located at 1200 Route 9 in Lakewood. Being held between 5pm and 11:30pm, the fourth annual Jamfest looked like it wasn’t going to happen, until concert promoter Kurt Hesse was able to cut a deal with The Local Shack, after having a falling-out with the event’s previous venue. The admission is free, with food being available to be ordered. Scheduled to perform at this year’s event are John Cantamessa, Rockin’ Ruckus, Dale Lakata, Tara Renee, Sibling Rivalry, Tim Harakal, Philip Cole, Midnite Sages, Sgt. Peter Jester and John Tornquest. Contest winners from events held at The Local Shack will also get an opportunity to perform. Headlining this year’s event will be the California-based Troubaduo.
Troubaduo consists of Jill Marie (originally from Southern California) and Bryson VanCleve (originally from Arkansas). Travelling approximately nine months out of the year on the road, I had an opportunity to speak with Jill and Bryson by phone, while they were passing through upstate New York. “Troubaduo became official in March of 2009,” explained Jill. “We met the year before in Los Angeles at the Room 5 Lounge performing at a show entitled ‘Acoustically Speaking.’ Bryson was working on an album at the time.” With both artists having been singer / songwriters for 10 years, either as a solo act or with a band, Jill and Bryson both share the lead and background vocal duties. They both also contribute acoustic guitar, electric guitar, mandolin, harmonica and small percussion to their shows. Bryson released the album “Halfway To Homeless” in 2008, while Jill put out the album “All Hearts” in 2009. “That album was dedicated to my late brother Jason,” shared Jill.
Describing their music as having elements of Americana, Folk, Blues, Sunshine Pop, Rock, Psychedelic, Gospel, Soul and Jazz, Troubaduo is expecting to release “We Live In The Gray,” their first official collaborative effort, within the next few months. “I write more of the rock vocals, while Jill writes the smoother vocals,” explained Bryson. Drawing from a vast pool of influences, some of these include Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Gillian Welch & Dave Rawlings, Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals, Tracy Chapman, Van Morrison, Chris Whitley, Ella Fitzgerald, Willie Nelson and Johnny & June Carter Cash. Two drummers will be utilized for the new album. Curt Bisquera, who has played behind Tom Petty and Johnny Cash, and Bryan “Brain” Mantia, who has performed with Buckethead and Primus, will both display their ability to maintain the backbeat on select cuts.
While they tour primarily as a duo, they have been known to use Al Aguilar on bass and Russ Cummings on drums for certain events. These two road warriors known as Troubaduo travel extensively across the United States performing at venues in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky, Texas, Oregon, California, Utah, Colorado, Arizona and Mississippi, as well as many other states. About their upcoming show at The Local Shack, Jill states “We found out about Jamfest through Sonicbids.com.” As far as what to expect at their show, Jill continues, “People usually dig our harmonies and vocals. You have to listen to the lyrics. We’re all about spreading love and peace. We are married and happy. We had a tough-looking guy with tattoos tear up during a performance of ‘Waiting For The Sun’.”
“Although we’re not religious, we are very spiritual. We believe in Jesus Christ and we believe in love. We also believe that faith can heal. We take one day at a time. Besides recording more music, we will be travelling and touring a lot. We want to donate a lot of money. We are only two people, but every little bit makes a difference. We want to spread the peace.” Troubaduo supports many non-profit organizations, including PreemptiveLove.org , who works towards raising money and awareness for the children in Northern Iraq that were affected by chemical warfare, as well as being in need of new hearts.
As of press time, they were scheduled to appear at a Time Warner Studio television shoot in Staten Island for “Mallet’s Place,” hosted by Jason “Mallet Man” Taylor. They are also s - The Jersey Shore Rag Magazine - Asbury Park, NJ

"CollegeNews.com features Troubaduo"

Troubaduo is a mish-mash of folk, blues, Americana and even gospel. The duo creates a sound that is lively, inspiring and incredibly catchy. Their harmonies and melodies are so strong that one critic remarked that it sounded like a third person was singing. Aside from their fun songs, their soft ballads manage to be both powerful and moving. They’re also very vocal about their political viewpoints, with the support of children’s charities in Iraq and songs like “Peace Song.” - CollegeNews.com November 2010

"Married couple brings eclectic mix to Jitters"

Staff Writer for NEW BRITAIN HERALD in NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT
SOUTHINGTON — Jitters, the Coffeehouse in Southington with a soul, has snagged a top vocal act Saturday night. If you’re into Americana folk music, a husband and wife duo influenced by Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Buddy Holly and Ray Charles are appearing. Check out Jill Marie and Bryson VanCleve. She’s a Californian; he’s Arkansas born and bred. This husband-and-wife soul duo have been making beautiful music together since October 2008. Before that they performed solo and in bands in and around LA. They started writing and working together, got it together musically and hit the road in the spring of 2009. They estimate they play the club circuit 150 nights a year.

Troubaduo is on the road most of the year, taking time out only to record. Their latest album is “We Live in the Gray,” a compilation of tunes including their tribute to Willie Nelson, “Leave Willie alone” and “Waiting for the Sun,” a dedication to Jill’s brother.

Saturday night be prepared for folk, gospel, soul, country & western and blues. This duo does it all. You may even hear some Johnny and June Carter Cash in their singing, Wonder and Aretha Franklin.

The twosome raises money for Preemptive Love, a non-profit organization that helps children in Iraq whose bodies have been exposed to the effects of chemical warfare.

If they have a credo it might be, “Not doing what your heart says is suicide.”

Critic David Lauser (35+ year drummer for Sammy Hagar) called VanCleve “John Lennon reincarnated.” VanCleve’s latest release is the album “Halfway to Homeless.” Marie’s album, “All Hearts” was released IN September. One critic gave her four stars and wrote, “This chick rocks.” - The New Britain Herald in Connecticut

- Troubaduo

Troubaduo shares responsible roles from the singing and instrumentation, to co-writing on all material. Troubaduo plays a wide variety of songwriter material including Americana, blues, rock, folk, Gospel and soul with an emphasis on wailing vocals and intense to uplifting lyrics concerning the real life you and I live. Their 2011 album, "We Live in the Gray", even features former Tom Petty drummer Curt Bisquera who is now on tour with Sara Mclachlan.
Bryson and Jill VanCleve of Troubaduo met while performing in 2008 at Poet Roni Girl's Acoustically Speaking in the historic Room 5 Lounge of Hollywood, California where famous artists such as Nat King Cole used to perform. They became great friends recording and performing together, then fell in love and got married later that year. As they both had the same desire to tour on the road full time, they decided to leave and loose their Los Angeles apartment and jobs, for a life and calling as National touring artists performing around 125 shows yearly. The duo still calls the road their home, but has roots from the concrete to the country including Jill's upbringing in a Southern California beach town, to Bryson's in Arkansas. They are California country folks with a positive outlook to live the one life they have been given, spreading peace and love. They are a can't miss act coming to a town near you.

Currently touring 7-9 months out of the year, this dynamic husband/wife team writes mostly artistic Americana and folk with elements of blues, sunshine pop, rock, psychedelic, Gospel, soul, and jazz, placing an emphasis on lyrics. They follow their musical path without the help of a booking agency, management company, major record label, etc., booking 100 plus shows annually, claiming God as their guide. They've been blessed to work with world artists such as Curt Bisquera (drums for Tom Petty, Alison Krauss, Johnny Cash, Etta James, Elton John, Mick Jagger, Bonnie Raitt, Sara McLachlan, etc.), Bob Daspit (Studio guitarist, engineer/mixing for Sammy Hagar, Spectrasonics design engineer, composer for Chris Tyng and Hans Zimmer) and Sean Beresford (Engineer for 3rd Eye Blind).

Some of their many influences include:
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Gillian Welch & Dave Rawlings, Ben Harper & the Innocent Criminals, Tracy Chapman, Van Morrison, Chris Whitley, Ella Fitzgerald, Willie Nelson, Johnny and June Carter Cash, Malcolm Holcombe, SRV, Ryan Adams, the Allman Brothers, Stevie Wonder, Mavis Staples, Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, Buddy Holly, Otis Redding, Elvis, Dave Matthews
