New Orleans-based band Shadowboxx originally formed in June 2002 with Shane Russell (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Vincent Jarman (lead guitar, vocals), and Daryl Battaglia (drums) making up the initial line-up. With this line-up, the band recorded their first 3 song EP, tracking many of the bass lines via keyboard. Recognizing the need for a full time bassist to round out the band’s sound, Shadowboxx recruited veteran bassist Peter Surrea in February 2003. They played their first gig as a full band later that month.
Shadowboxx’s music demonstrates that they have developed a clear understanding of conventional pop song structures, and the importance of writing songs that are both catchy and melodic. The band’s alternative sound combines both acoustic and electric guitars with heavy rock rhythms and memorable, sincere lyrics. The unique combination of influences that can be heard in the band’s music includes Incubus, The Dave Matthews Band, Husker Du, and Stone Temple Pilots.
In October 2003, Shadowboxx released their long-awaited debut album, What’s Inside. Shortly after releasing the album, the band’s following strengthened throughout the New Orleans area due to performances at diverse venues such as The Howlin’ Wolf, Tipitina’s, Twiropa, The State Palace Theatre, and the New Orleans Convention Center. In addition, the band’s popularity has spread regionally due to lively performances at such venues as The Blue Monkey Tavern in Monroe, LA, Upstairs Downstairs in Biloxi, MS, and Alligator Joe’s in Shreveport, LA.
In April 2004, Shadowboxx won the first round in the “A Shot At The Cabo Wabo” band search at the Hard Rock Cafe in Memphis, TN. In a competition that originally began with approximately 8,000 applications, Shadowboxx made it to the final 60 bands in the country.
Daryl Battaglia left the band in June of 2004 to venture into other persuits. He was shortly thereafter replaced by Kieth Anselmo, an accomplished drummer from the New Orleans area.
Shadowboxx has completed enough new material for a second LP and is hoping to embark upon the creation a second CD in the near future. In the mean time the band continues spreading the sounds of shadowboxx by playing shows abroad and venturing out on small tours reaching new audiences, making new fans, and hopfully friends along the way.

“….Shadowboxx’s uncompromisingly literate songs provide unusually rewarding payoffs”
Alternative Press, ‘05
“….I’ve listened to this album more than anything else this year, and I still don’t feel I’ve fully explored its depths. Initially, I was taken by the compelling and well crafted music, but I found myself being drawn more and more toward the lyrics. Simple, yet relative and well said. It almost feels inappropriate to praise this album rather than to explore it, and hopefully, feel it.
Pete Cashmore, NME.com
“There are no bad songs on here. In fact, the only criticism you can level at shadowbox is that it is too much, an embarrassment of riches, a grand buffet of drama, beauty, and romance. And, if that is all you have to be criticized, well, then you will be O.K.”
Justin Coberlake, Stylus magazine
“….Shadowboxx has made an album full of catchy, beautiful, blaring, brilliant songs. Fans of Britney Spears and other cheesy pop need not read any further. Fans of real music will be craving this album….”
Bill Aicher, CDreviews.com
“The albums songs are simple, nothing too complex, and even less philosophical. So why has shadowboxx gained popularity through it? The answer is the laid-back alternative rock sound we have not heard done well in quite awhile. I’m sure you all can, and will, relate to shadowboxx’s music.”
