Carissa Plumm Chapman: Bio

Carissa Plumm Chapman, is an LA-based independent singer/songwriter/musician, whose main instruments are electric and acoustic guitar, bass, and vocals. She is an accomplished songwriter who has an extensive library of songs, some of which have yet to be recorded.

Music was a strong interest of hers from an early age in the Bay Area where she was born.

Her music, is a hybrid of Americana, pop and rock, with a dash of country, folk and of course show tunes stemming from her musical theater background. Her style has an unmistakable edge - lyrics speak to affairs of the heart, giving her lyrics a compelling visual element. Her musical influences are: Patty Griffin, Pat Metheny, India Arie, Fiona Apple, Eric Clapton, Beck and Bonnie Raitt, to name only a few.

She traveled throughout Europe and a one-way ticket to Hawaii turned into seven years. Those years saw her blossom into a professional stage-film-commercial actress with an emphasis on musical theater, winning her a "Best Actress" award for her performance in Studs Terkel's musical, "Working". Also, during her years in Hawaii she co-wrote with musician Davo Coria, who worked with Sheila E. and Pete Escovedo.

She left the island and landed in Los Angeles in hopes of expanding her acting career. It was at this time that her talent for song-writing took off when she met a female singer who was particularly fond of her writing talents and asked her to write songs for her. This was a turning point for Carissa and from that point she has concentrated on songwriting exclusively.

Her songwriting has won her numerable competition honors including a "Song of the Year" finalist, and several honorable mentions. She is a two-time honorable mention at "Billboards' World Song Contest as well, and most recently, a 2011 semi-finalist award in the UK Songwriting Contest for her song "Lonesome Traveler".

She has had extensive airplay/been podcast on the Feminine Groove, Nette Radio, Local Music Cafe, and iRadio LA. Currently some of her compositions are podcast at GRM Radio, mvyRadio, and, the 24th edition of Vents Magazine/Radio.

The webzine, Junior Caves Magazine's review and interview gives Carissa a sounding board for her to acquaint listeners with her music and her thoughts. This review/interview can be found on her blog at her MySpace website.

  Carissa Plumm Chapman's Interview with Isaac
  
  Isaac: What has been the best part of 2009 for you musically so far?
  
  Carissa: I would say that all of '09 has been incredible so far and the year is only a little over a half way over. I've been getting a lot of airplay and recognition for my work. I've also been meeting a lot of fans and musicians online at different music sites that are popping up all over the web. It's great exchanging ideas and listening to other artists' work. So much great music out there from independent artists!
  
  Isaac: What do you feel has the biggest accomplishment for 2009 so far?
  
  Carissa: My biggest accomplishment has been that I've written a tremendous amount of songs. It just seems to be pouring out in buckets! Of course, I haven't recorded them all but hopefully I will have recorded a lot of them before the year is over.
  
  Isaac: Describe the music scene in Southern California.
  
  Carissa: The music scene in Southern California is very diverse. Fans are very opened to all types of music. They seem to be gravitating towards the independent artists. They are hungry for something different other than the typical mainstream music. There are literally hundreds of neighborhood clubs, open mikes, fairs; you name it, where musicians can perform. Of course, there will always be a draw for the big time acts but that's true for any big city like L.A.
  
  Isaac: What has been the best venue to perform at and why?
  
  Carissa: A great venue would be B.B. Kings at Universal City. They are so open to independent acts. There is also a lot of traffic in that area because of the big tourist trade. The club is always packed and that is great exposure for artists! The same would be true for The Cat Club in Hollywood.
  
  Isaac: Elaborate a little about whom were the biggest influences in the music industry and why?
  
  Carissa: Wow...the biggest influences in the music industry... there's been so many! How far should I go back? I'll start with the obvious, Elvis. Everyone knows he changed the face of music and introduced rock and roll, and helped to expose fans to this type of music worldwide, which by the way, was already being played by black musicians in America. They were the first, but Elvis was so big and had so much influence worldwide that he turned the tide.
  
  Then there was The Beatles whose influence was worldwide as well. Their music was rock and roll but they brought in the British influence which had somewhat of a classical flair. Their music was so theatrical, so fun and very different from pure rock and roll. The world embraced it wholeheartedly and again, their music started a new trend.
  
  Let's not forget Jimmy Hendrix the great guitarist who brought metal music to the world with his wild guitar licks. Guitarists today hail Hendrix as a revolutionary.
  
  Janis Joplin's wild and raspy vocals and rockish mannerisms started a trend for women artists today.
  
  Of course we also will never forget what The Jacksons brought to music. Most of all Michael Jackson. The epitome of R&B and true showmanship through his music and dance performances. I think that The Jacksons/Michael introduced yet another new era to music, a mixture of song and dance.
  
  Madonna who, at her early beginnings sang and danced was a revolutionary because she introduced dance music to the world and I think had an impact on opening more doors for women pop artists.
  
  Addition to the above: (As far as my biggest influence, I can't say that I have had one in particular. I love all types of music from classical, jazz, showtunes, country, rock, pop, you name it! I guess that's why my music is so varied. You will find the feel of rock, pop, jazz, and country in my songs. I think that my experience in musical theater really shows up in my music as well.)
  
  Isaac: Lets talk about what you feel you will bring to the music industry?
  
  Carissa: I think that I will bring yet another unique point of view to the music industry. Although I list my music under pop/rock, I'm constantly being told by fans that my music is very unique and that they have not heard anything like it. I also will bring to the music industry an Asian-American point of view. There still is not a lot, but there are a little more Asians entering this industry who bring yet another new flair because of their background. Music is constantly changing as the melting pot is growing larger. I think it's a good thing, and a great thing for the music evolution!
  
  Isaac: If you had the opportunity to work with one artist or group, who would it be and why?
  
  Carissa: There is a group out of Georgia called "The Barry Richman Band". Their music is awesome! Barry is one of the best electric guitarists I've heard. I'm a guitar fanatic and have always wanted to be great on the guitar but have not been able to fully pursue it because my songwriting takes up too much of my time. I play guitar only to get my music on tape. I have a few songs that I would love to hear him play. He would really do justice to my music!
  
  Isaac: How would you describe your music to others?
  
  Carissa: Because of my extensive theatrical background, and the music I listened to growing up, which was a lot of show tunes, rock, pop, folk and country, I guess I would describe my songs as a mixture of these.
  
  Isaac: What type of feedback have you received from fans about your music?
  
  Carissa: I get a lot great feedback on my lyrics. I also love to write songs with a lot vocal harmonies, probably because of all the country songs from the past. Fans really like my harmonies and they have mentioned that they love my melodies.
