Biography

Clark Engbrecht has a been involved in the Wichita music scene for over 25 years and has been a member of local legends, The Fabulous Shi®theads for more than the last 20 of them. The Fabulous Shi®theads have opened for many national acts including Spencer Davis, Blue Oyster Cult, Delbert McClinton, and Buddy Guy, among others.

Clark is a classically trained musician, having studied trumpet from elementary school through college. While trumpet is Clark's primary instrument, keyboards are a close second. Clark has a special talent for playing trumpet and keys simultaneously, a talent he picked up in a band where he was the only horn player and had to cover both instruments.

Clark has a style all his own and has many influences. He blends Jazz with Classical, Blues, Funk, and Rock to create fresh, unusual, and compelling music.

Instrumentation

This page is primarily devoted to my original music demos. Instrumentation is hardware synth's, Hammond XK-2, computer based software synths, Fender Rhodes, trumpet, and vocals.

  Clark Engbrecht's "Jam Bake" is a fun and funky instrumental that put a smile on this trumpet player's face right from the start. The tune is based on a syncopated rhodes and poppin' bass groove. When Clark's trumpet kicks in, the sassy, catchy style reminded me of how I feel when I hear Lee Morgan's "The Sidewinder", you can just picture the sly grin while he's playing!
  
  When Clark gets into his solo, he doesn't try to blow us away with technique, but instead hits us with some fat Herb Alpert-like blats and swoops. Clark lets us know he's got some chops, but he's going after a simpler feel, showing us some attitude, and it works great.
  
  A short drum and bass break lead us back to the theme, and it hit me: what a great TV show theme song this would make, I can picture this as the soundtrack for a tough but slick detective busting the bad guys and loving the ladies at the same time!
  
  "Jam Bake" is a jazz/funk gem that stands up well to repeated listens, the kind of tune that makes reviewing fun.

  Classical music is often difficult to review. Unlike other musical genres, composers who write classical music have quite the challenge on their hands because they are often compared to the greats like Mozart, Chopin and Beethoven.
  
  I'm usually quite critical of classical composers since my background is classically trained. However, after listening to Mr. Engbrecht's piece entitled "The Fall of Autumn" I am not only impressed but inspired.
  
  Combining rich strings with a nice woodwind section hovering over the harmony creates an aural soundscape deserving of this work's title. This work also uses all the good elements of a well written classical piece. It has emotion, style and best of all it puts the listener in another place in time as the composer intended. I also like the frequent use of crescendos and decrescendos to accent the accent the mood. The length of this work is also adequate - so many classical works I review are trifles and are way to short.
  
  I normally have constructive feedback to give an artist. Other than that the recording quality could have been a bit better, all I can say here is make more of this beautiful, majestic music. Not only is this work suitable for air play but I can see a film score in the making. Bravo!
