Biography

Putting the "pop" into power pop, the brothers Pinder are back with their second disc, Ordinary Man, and fans of Mitch Linker, Jeff Larson, Kyle Vincent, The Rembrandts and other artists who place sweet melodies and harmonies paramount are going to enjoy this one quite a bit.

The Pinders are based in California and the opening track "Dear Diane" is the kind of near-perfect sunny California pop that will hook you in from the get-go. "Hold Me Tonight" almost sounds like classic Swedish pop like The Merrymakers or The Tangerines, and "Waves Crash" is a silky smooth tune. "Oh Woman" is old-school balladry not unlike early Beatles classics like "If I Fell" and "And I Love Her", while "Inside Me" is midtempo sweetness.
Absolute Power Pop

My guitar sings softly/I believe/It's inside me," sings Matt Pinder on The Pinder Brothers' sophomore effort Ordinary Man. He's not kidding. The sons of Moody Blues founder Mike Pinder, Matt and his brother Michael Lee have got music in their blood. But DNA aside, Ordinary Man, is one of the most fully realized pop albums in recent memory. Armed with the immediacy of Material Issue "Dear Diane" and the prefect brotherly melodicism of Evan and Jaron ("Hold Me Tonight") The Pinder Brothers know exactly how to land a pop uppercut. Keeping this in boxing terms, Ordinary Man is a pretty clean knockout. "Holiday" brings to mind Dulicnea-era Toad The Wet Sprocket, "Inside Me" suggests Crowded House and the thoughtful "Waves Crash" is a ruminative wonder. Elsewhere, the dead-on harmonies of "Oh Woman" are crushingly beautiful; the punchy pop of "Whisper" is hard to resist and the album closer "Empty Street" is truly elegant. Like The Feeling, whose Twelve Stops And Home single-handedly brought back the notion of a song boasting a catchy chorus, The Pinder Brothers don't shy away from the big hooks. So it's no surprise that they reel you in every time.

  The follow up album gets a bit stronger with "Dear Diane," a mainstream adult pop single. There is more electric guitar in this album, although the sweet California-style melodies continue to inspire, like in the next song "Hold Me Tonight." The feel and chord changes of "Waves Crash" is very much like Tim Finn, and my favorite Pinder Brothers song so far. The lyrical content is more mature as well, "Inside Me" is evidence of this with a song about faith in oneself. I miss the high falsetto taking center stage, but all the songs reflect thoughtful songwriters having something meaningful to say with guitars, great lyrics, and lush harmonies.

  Like other brothers (Nelson comes to mind for some reason) - both Matt Pinder and Mike Lee Pinder have pop music running through their veins. Actually, the closest sound the Pinders have is to The Rembrandts. This is smooth easy going pop full of romantic subtext. Not every song has a good hook, but the ones that do are true gems here. Both albums here are recommended.

  The Pinder's debut is a sweet affair with a bit of modern mid-tempo pop with "Goodbye Say Hello" and playful lyrics and innocent harmonies bringing the listener along for the ride. The space themed follow up "Jupiter Falls" you hear the falsetto in the chorus and great potential. "Hang on Tight" closely resembles a Rembrandts song and has a pretty good hook too. Another shining example on this album is "Nicolina" which is great first crush-type love song that resembles Toad the Wet Sprocket's mellow, melodic folk-pop. "First Kiss Goodnight" is a ballad where the falsetto takes off and other than the overly sappy lyric ("Something in your bright blue eyes says sex is overrated") is a wonderful song. The ender here, "Sunflower" is a delicate and inspirational ballad that is a strong finish here.

  That a couple of these songs wouldn't sound out of place on a mid '60s or early '70s albums from The Moody Blues should be reason enough for rejoicing. The fact that all the music was written and performed by two offspring of Moody Blues founder Mike Pinder makes the whole thing a lot more clear. Apparently, Mike's penchant for writing orchestral pop masterworks aren't lost on his sons, Matt Pinder and Mike Lee Pinder, who are out to make their own noise as The Pinder Brothers.
  
  The title track of their 2006 CD, Jupiter Falls is a future pop classic by any standard and helping the sons carry the torch forward, the elder Pinder mixes in some of his patented swirling mellotrons on the track.
  
  Among the first great new musical stories of the millennium, the brothers touch on a range of catchy, adolescent themes. Mike promises even more adventurous future releases, but final and tenth track on Jupiter Falls, "Sunflower" has a Moodies style hook that will even reel in fans old enough to remember the '60s British Invasion.

  The Pinder name might ring bells for some of you. Mike Pinder was a founding member of the legendary...The Pinder name might ring bells for some of you. Mike Pinder was a founding member of the legendary Moody Blues and fulfilled the band's mellotron duties, as well as being part of the band's great harmony vocals. But Pinder's greatest contribution to music just might be in his offspring. Both of his sons, Matthew and Michael Lee, display enormous talent both instrumentally and in songwriting skill. Their full-length CD, "Jupiter Falls," is one of the brightest discs of the year.
  
  The Pinder Brothers tie the harmony vocals of Crosby, Stills and Nash together with the songwriting style of Simon & Garfunkel, and ultimately put their own modern spin on everything in the end. Songs like "Goodbye Say Hello" and "Closer To Mars" find the band harmonizing frequently and perfectly, with all of it layered on top of a wonderfully light pop arrangement. The band displays their songwriting prowess and harmonizing skills throughout "Jupiter Falls," with a few pleasant surprises dispersed along the way. For example, "On T.V." draws heavily from its silly and fun lyrical passages and a more upbeat electric pop sound; and "Wait For The Moon" is a hybrid of a CSN-style song that erupts into a gripping guitar solo. The Pinder Brothers talent was recently recognized when their song, "Hang On Tight," was awarded 1st Runner Up in the UK Songwriting Contest under the Indie/Rock category, and was also a finalist in the Pop category.
  
  If you are a fan of well written pop music in the same vein as CSN, Simon & Garfunkel, or even Crowded House, this is a band you will absolutely love.

• CD Review: The Pinder Brothers - Jupiter Falls [+ Show ]
  

  If you're anywhere close to the same age as me you recognize the name Pinder, and for good reason. M...If you're anywhere close to the same age as me you recognize the name Pinder, and for good reason. Mike Pinder was one of the founders of and lent his voice to The Moody Blues.
  
  On Jupiter Falls, his two sons Mike and Matt, The Pinder Brothers, offer sweet and innocent sounds.
  
  Pop fare abounds in the ten tracks, all with a sweet innocence I'm sure most parents would prefer young kids to listen to over what abounds on mainstream radio these days. The melody and the music itself are nice. There isn't anything harsh or displeasing to the ear, and the tunes are quite catchy.
  
  "Goodbye Say Hello" does bear an ever so slight resemblance to the similarly-titled Beatles song. It's not overwhelming, but enough to call "Hello Goodbye" to mind, mostly in the chorus. The Pinder Brothers' song is more upbeat and happy. It's a general theme that runs through the entire CD. From one song to the next the overall sound has a natural flow which is only enhanced by the production.
  
  The lyrics of "Jupiter Falls" speak from the heart of someone just coming of age, and looking at the world and love.
  And it's delivered just the way you might expect, fun poppy melodies.
