NEW CD, Rob Lutes and Rob MacDonald LIVE, 2011

In more than a decade of playing together, Rob Lutes and Rob MacDonald have developed the rare ability to seamlessly blend their individual sounds—Lutes’ powerful acoustic fingerstyle and soulful, husky baritone and MacDonald’s virtuoso resophonic guitar accompaniment—into one that is exceptionally intricate and intense.

The duo’s powerhouse live performances have been earning devotees throughout Canada, the US and Europe.

LIVE was recorded on a snowy Saturday, January 29, 2011, at “Le Red Room”, an intimate venue in the Quebec countryside. It features striking duo versions of 10 Lutes originals from his four studio CDs along with four covers from the blues and R&B canon. In all, LIVE captures some of the musical magic this duo has been sharing with audiences for more than a decade.

"A masterwork. Simply superb." Rejean Nadon, Le Net Blues

"Lutes’ warm & raspy baritone voice mesmerizes and careful listening reveals a thoughtful & eloquent songwriter. Excellent performances of excellent songs." John Valentyn, Toronto Blues Society

"With work like this, Lutes should be getting a warm reception on “this cold Canadian road,” to quote the man himself. A formidable songwriter."

FULL BIO
Rob Lutes is the real deal.

The soulful singer-songwriter from Montreal with the ever-growing collection of literate, moving meditations on life and love is receiving increasing praise on the international roots scene both for his impassioned live performances and his stunning songs. A former Kerrville New Folk winner with four acclaimed CDs, the latest two out on Rounder Europe, Lutes's ability to encapsulate universal ideas and questions, even the subtle ones, coupled with his gritty, heartfelt delivery and world-class performance chops, have invited comparisons with several legends in the roots genre from John Hiatt to Fred Eaglesmith.

“He will soon be counted amongst the ranks of the best in the industry, a rare talent that keeps getting better with each project released” says Hello Darlin’ Productions promoter Matt Large. Heaven magazine writer Kees van Wee calls him “one of the most impressive new Americana artists of the decade.”

Greg Quill of the Toronto Star deemed Lutes’ 2007 studio effort Ride the Shadows “a brilliantly understated gem distinguished by a warm and raspy voice, honest and eloquent lyrics, and evocative acoustic guitar work…among the best of the year's roots/blues crop.” The Ottawa Citizen named the CD “one of the Top Ten in Canada for 2007”.

Following on the success of that work, which also took him on tour across Europe and Canada, Lutes recorded his much-awaited fourth CD with noted Boston-area producer David Goodrich (Chris Smither, Peter Mulvey). The result of that collaboration, Truth & Fiction, was released in November 2008 and in December hit #4 on the EuroAmericana Chart. The Montreal Gazette has called it “his most compelling CD yet.”

ABOUT LUTES' 2008 RELEASE TRUTH & FICTION

Truth & Fiction is the fourth CD from soulful singer-songwriter Rob Lutes. Recorded in an intimate studio in Montreal during the first week in September with producer David Goodrich (Chris Smither, Jeffrey Foucault), the CD contains 11 new Lutes tunes and a cover of Warren Zevon’s Mutineer.

The impressive group of musicians with Lutes on this release include noted singer-songwriter Annabelle Chvostek on vocals, percussionist Geoff Arsenault (Ray Bonneville, David Myles), Montreal-based jazz giant Morgan Moore on bass, Olivier Demers (Vent du Nord) on violin and Lutes’ gifted sideman Rob MacDonald on resophonic and electric guitars. Goodrich himself saddles up a few instruments to round out the sound that envelops Lutes’ own rhythmic fingerstyle guitar as never before.

“It felt like time to record these songs,” he says. “Some of them have been around for several months and some are pretty much brand new, but they just feel right together to me. I usually like to get songs a little bit road-tested before I put them down on a recording. But there is also something that happens in the studio when all the possible tracks are assembled. Some new ones just needed to come along on this trip.”

The ability to encapsulate universal ideas and questions, albeit subtle ones, has become a hallmark of Lutes’ songs.

“Most songwriters are doing the same thing—trying to address some of the larger questions of life. It’s just a matter of how you come at it. I’ve always preferred to take the tree-lined back road—the metaphorical road I guess—to get me to the place, the reality, that we all share as people. That’s when I feel like I’ve found something special. And it’s sort of like arriving home when you hit on something that’s real.”
