Biography

Jo Williamson is a folkish experimental singer and songwriter, who in voice and writing has been likened to Joni Mitchell and sometimes Kate Bush, but mostly, she sounds like herself. Time Out NY writes "Jo has an intriguing lived-in quality to her voice and a talent for smart elegant turns of phrase." In January of 2011 she released her first full length record "Be the Man" produced by celebrated singer-songwriter Martha Wainwright.

She has played in venues and festivals along the east coast, in Canada, Europe and all over New York City. She has worked with contemporary composers, video artists, and theater and film directors, as singer, writer and performer. In 2008, she released an EP "Wake on the Hudson" produced by Brent Arnold. She used to host a radio show once a month called "By Associations" out of Bridgeport, CT on WPKN 89.5 fm. Her live music performances have been described as 'mesmerizing, haunting and moving'.

  Jo has a well-honed and wide vocal range. Her voice has a lovely crystalline quality and works well ...Jo has a well-honed and wide vocal range. Her voice has a lovely crystalline quality and works well with the simple acoustic arrangements. The EP opens with the lightly backed track "Sailor Boy." Indeed Jo's voice is the focal point of the tune but the arrangements add a lovely texture. "Scramblin" is sung atop a gentle but lush arrangement. Vocal excursions and lovely backing harmonies are evocatively delivered.
  
  Our staff especially enjoyed the folky track "Ready," primarily as a result of Jo's simply gorgeous soaring vocals. "Dream on Dreamer" is a catchier and more upbeat tune with a richer guitar-laced arrangement. The dramatic tempo changes within the song work especially well with and highlight Jo's voice. The EP concludes with the evocative and quiet ballad "O Belinda." Listen to Jo's voice work as an essential instrument in the arrangement.

  Jo Williamson has a lovely voice. Some vocalists let their pipes carry
  them, but on her best nights (like this one) Williamson lets hers
  push the show over the top. This was the lullaby slot and Williamson
  played it for all its worth, crooning out some lovely shots of
  songcraft. Always a pleasure.
