PICTOU: For a young pop rock group from Pictou, performing at the East Coast Music Awards 72-hour jam in Halifax could represent a turning point.
Beyond Ash, a four piece band that released a CD last year has gained a 30-minute spot at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday during the ECMAs at the World Trade and Convention Centre.
The band consists of lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Ashley George, along with drummer Jared Poirier, lead guitarist Jody Turner and bass guitarist Joel Boyce, who was with the band from its start two years ago and recently returned to the group.
The group looks at the exposure from playing at the ECMAs in Halifax as a opening for them to perform in the big city. Currently, Beyond Ash plays Wednesdays and Thursdays and some Fridays in Truro and also at the Highlander Pub in Pictou on Saturdays.
They were there last Saturday night, after a benefit gig earlier that evening at the Stella Maris Church Hall for a proposed skateboard park in Pictou.
The band also has performed at other local establishments, such as Relics Pub and the Pressroom Pub in Pictou, as well as the town's annual lobster carnival.
Beyond Ash also plans to play during the annual Curl for Cancer fund-raidsing bonspeil on February 21 at the New Caledonian Curling Club in Pictou.
Up to now, the release party at the Highlander fo rthe CD the band cut at Riverfront Studios in New Glasgow last year has been their biggest moment.
"It's probably the biggest thing we've done." Mr. George says. "We're really proud of the CD and the reception we got at the release party."
The group has sold more than 300 copies of the CD, which has received air play from CKEC radio in New Glasgow, as well as the CBC and 100.9 Big Dawg in Truro.
Playing at the ECMAs has taken the band to a new level. Mr. George says, and he's not entirely sure how it happened.
"We've just learned about it." he says. "We recently joined the ECMA and now this. With everything else that's going on, we've had no time to think about it." -

Rock Group Beyond Ash makes it into festival
Pictou - Pictou musician Ashley George is trying not to get his hopes too high for his band's audition in the Big Apple next month.
The four-member alternative rock band Beyond Ash has been accepted to participate in the Nov. 10-20 New York Internation Music Festival.
"I'm basically going for fun, and whatever happens." Mr. George said Thursday during a break from his day job as a welder at TrentonWorks.
But the chance to play in New York before entertainment executives and music scouts is pretty exciting, he added.
The band sent a CD of original compositions and a $700 entry fee off to festival organizers after bass player Joel Boyce saw the event's website. Within days, a panel of judges had examined the CD and told the band bmembers they were in.
Now the band, which also includes lead guitarist Jody Turner and drummer Jared Poirier, is trying to raise enough money to pay their way to the 10-day festival.
"We've been pricing plane tickets. They're $450 each for a round trip, and then we have to hav a place to stay, and Manhatten is expensive," Mr. George said.
"We're not too worried about food, but I'm saving my money."
Pictou area businesses have offered support for the group, holding barbecues and outfitting the band in clothing for their New York gig. -
