Biography

Bruce Jackson has been active on the east coast music scene for many years. Keeping the music fresh and swinging while honoring and acknowledging the lineage of past masters is the core focus and inspiration of his craft. Jackson has been called to work in many diverse situations, playing Dixieland, contemporary, mainstream, and avant-garde styles. Highlights include working with Freddy Cole, Melissa Walker, Ted Curson, Ricky Ford, Sonny Fortune, Mino Cinelu, Mike Richmond, Rhoda Scott, Dick Sudhalter, Johnny Brown, Joyce Bryant, Ed Cherry, Peter Giron, Calvin Hill, Sarah Morrow, Warren Smith and Earle Warren.

In addition to working with the trio and other artists, Jackson has also served as a teaching artist for Jazz House Kids. Run by Executive Director, vocalist Melissa Walker and board member, bassist Christian McBride, Jazz House Kids is an organization dedicated to nurturing, mentoring and teaching young people through the study of jazz.

Jackson has also been a guest artist at the American School of Modern Music in Paris, France. As a guest artist, Jackson has given master classes on the history of the drum set and conceptualized workshops for rhythm section players. He has performed in France as a member of the “Virtual Quartet” with American transplants Peter Giron, Joe Makholm and Boston based saxophonist Jim Repa. Jackson has also performed in Italy at the Rassegna Internazionale Jazz Festival with Sarah Morrow and the American All Stars in Paris, a group that featured world-renowned artists’ organist Rhoda Scott and saxophonist Ricky Ford.

Jackson has earned a Master of Music degree (Jazz Studies) from William Paterson University. As part of his Master’s thesis, “Philly Joe’s Beat: The creative process and ensuing legacy of Philly Joe Jones”, Jackson has lectured and demonstrated brush techniques associated with Jones but not often seen. Jackson has also has been awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree in music from Thomas Edison State College.
