Biography

Daniel Arite (pronounced a-ree-tee) has been featured in venues around the US, on public radio and also on PBS. Drawing from broad influences and the guitar's ancient roots, Dan moves effortlessly from chaotic improvs to celestial meditations. His arrangements of traditional music, jazz, and original compositions are lush with textures and colors that reveal the beauty and versatility of the instrument. His work has been recognized with a grant from Meet the Composer and a scholarship from the Coca-Cola Foundation.

Daniel studied classical guitar with renowned acoustic/classical guitarist Michael Chapdelaine at the University of New Mexico. In 2000, he performed in a rare CD recording with the legendary Cecil Taylor, which was produced during a residency with the jazz great at the Atlantic Center for the Arts. He performed with the Arcadian Duet, a classical guitar duo (1985 to 1991); and was a member of the eclectic music group, Volk Verk, playing electric guitar, mandolin, fiddle, and banjo. Dan is also a founder of Grass Soup, “a bluegrass band that tried not to sound like a bluegrass band.” Several of his original compositions are included on Grass Soup’s CD, Have a Bowl, released in 1997. He composes and performs with The Bosch Institute, collaborating with poet/orator Thandiwe Shiphrah. Their debut CD, The Secret Marvelous Instead (www.cdbaby.com/bosch), features “audio collages” created from experimental poetry, electronic and acoustic music played on everything from a guitar to a sponge.

Dan is also a visual artist. His artwork is in galleries, private collections and in the collections of institutions.
