Biography

Sorcha’s voice packs a punch. Weilding acoustic guitar and clawhammer banjo alongside “sultry and jazzy” vocals, she “unveils a suite of musical styles that shows a wide-ranging songwriting ability. . .witty verses with smart rhymes” (Sam Pfeifle, Portland Pheonix).

Early on, she was steeped in the jazz of Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone, pop and traditional folk. Bluegrass, country and funky blues infatuations followed (think Bonnie Raitt meets Etta James at a Crooked Still concert).

Raised in a family of musicians in rural coastal Maine, Sorcha came to music through a significant family loss. She has performed throughout New England and beyond for over 15 years, and continues to find ways to incorporate music as a healing artform for people in grief or in transition. She has recorded and performed with Jordan Messan Benissan’s West African drumming ensemble and folk-bluegrass quartet Ramblin’ Red, among other collaborative projects. She currently performs solo, as a cello/banjo duo with Jo Sorrell, and with her four-piece band. Sorcha has produced three original albums – Balance, 2001 (a barter project) Walk It Once, 2006 (full band CD) and Laughing and Lamenting, 2010 (half-solo, half-duo celebration loss and growth).

JO + SORCHA: CELLO – BANJO DUO:
During the cold Maine winter of 2009, jazz-infused harmonies met bluegrass roots in Jo's small kitchen, and formalized two years later as a versatile, groove-driven, Americana duo. Jo rolls her classical cello background into funky bluegrass chops a-la Crooked Still and Ben Sollee, while Sorcha’s songwriting and banjo/guitar playing is steeped in jazz, folk and blues, with influences including Nina Simone, Bonnie Raitt and Tom Waits. Together with spot-on vocal harmonies, their fierce independence is both grounding, spontaneous, and toe-tappingly catchy. Always chasing their next musical adventure, Sorcha and Jo are equally at home in clubs, coffeehouses, festivals, and house concerts. And, of course, in Jo’s kitchen.
