Biography

Mozely Rose has been making the classic sound new again for over five years. Their outlaw country rock sound reflects their hometown of Richmond, VA and their own life experiences on the road and off, good times and bad.

After relocating to Nashville, TN, the duo has been taking time from touring to focus their efforts on writing new material with Grammy winning songwriters and industry veterans. Songwriter circles and workshops have been a large emphasis for MoRo. Now that the song selection process is behind them, Mozely Rose is about to launch a new grassroots radio campaign with their three newest singles just recently recorded in Nashville, TN (visit www.mozelyrose.com or www.myspace.com/mozelyrose to hear the new singles). Look for a digital release of the new tunes in the Fall of ’09 as well as show dates to support the release.

For many years, Mozely Rose called the road their home as they toured extensively with over 175 shows nationwide each year. The tour was in support of their album, The New Brew, released in 2007. During that time, they shared the stage with acts such as Leon Russell, Rick Derringer, Edgar Winter Group, David Lee Murphy, Pat Green, Emerson Drive, and Molly Hatchet. Their relocation to Nashville was kicked off by being asked to perform at George Jones’ ranch during George Jones University, which led to many showcases during both 2008 and 2009’s CMA Music Festival week.

Across the Atlantic, Mozely Rose has been making an impact in the foreign market with CD sales and digital downloads in countries like Germany, Italy, Belgium, and in 2007 they were featured in the French magazine, Bands of Dixie, and were nominated for best southern rock band for the year 2007.

  Mozely Rose have the look and image down. When they stroll onstage they exude a Southern “Outlaw Rock” swagger – from the tips of the boots to the top of their dirty trucker hats, you get the feeling that this is who they are, not who they pretend to be. They take shots from a flask on stage and deliver huge crunchy straight-ahead rock songs full of big, bent vibrating solos that ring with a down and dirty Southern authenticity. They are like Lynyrd Skynyrd before they crawled out of a Florida swamp.
  Coming together six years ago in Richmond, VA, the four members of Mozely Rose - Alan Crist (guitar), Matt Nichols (guitar), Seth Penick (drums), and Neal Townsend (bass) - found their start backing an unknown country singer, but they left him a short while later when they realized they were the main draw
  They struck out on their own, and found immediate success signing with an independent label Acclaim, and released their debut album Low Down and Dirty, ten songs that bleed ‘70s inspired southern rock.
  Their time on Acclaim proved to be an ill-fit though, and again they moved onto do things their own way. Their outlaw image was further cemented when they fired their manager and label while on the road in Colorado for, “not knowing what they hell they were doing.”
  Since then they have taken matters into their own hands and found greater success. They have increased their touring schedule, playing both more shows and finding a chance to open for such bands as Steel Train, Lee Roy Parnell and The Bridge. They have also begun work on their follow up album.
  Guitarist Alan Crist describes the work in progress, “It will truly capture what Mozely Rose does best. It will have more funk and blues on it, but will still hold onto that in-your-face country rock.”

  Straight-ahead Southern rock is what Mozely Rose is all about, but should they rename themselves the Charlie Molly Skynyrd Brothers Band? Not quite, because while its music fits into those “categories,” the Richmond, Va., quartet isn’t about regurgitation.
  There are similarities to the genre’s classic ’70s groups, mostly lots of dual lead guitar that often involves slide. (Actually, there’s more of that here than on any album by one of the above-mentioned outfits.) But Mozely Rose stands out from most of today’s Southern rock emulators because of their high-quality lead vocals, sharp songwriting and occasional funk/R&B touches.
  On the album’s longest song, the 7 1/2-minute “Catching Up With Me,” they give a tip of the hat to the jazzy side of Southern rock in a Dickey Betts homage that also includes some Jaimoe-style congas.
  Several tracks have that speed-pickin’ style the Outlaws are so good at, namely “The Pure Station,” “I Don’t Know Who You Are Anymore” and “Once Again.” There are even a couple of numbers that don’t fit the stereotype: the honky-tonk-leaning “She Don’t Want Me Drinkin’ ” and the blues-shufflin’ “Paper Napkin.”
  Recorded at David Lowery’s Sound of Music Studios in Richmond, the audio quality is superb, making this excellent batch of songs even more enjoyable.

  (Nashville – TN) Local residents, Alan Crist and Matt Nicholls of Mozely Rose from Chesterfield, Virginia, recently attended George Jones University in Nashville, Tennessee. The duo met entertainment industry executives, movers and shakers that keep country music industry at full steam.
  
  The kick off to the three day packed seminar was a “Possum Weenie Roast” at George and Nancy’s Franklin, TN farm. Alan and Matt were asked to perform here on the first night during the meet and greet. The seminar included speeches by top Nashville booking agents, managers, publicists, record label presidents and the opening speech with questions and answers with Grand Ole Opry member Jim Ed Brown.
  
  The goal of George Jones University is to teach the “ABCs” of the music industry. This year’s sponsorship was Cracker Barrel Family Restraunts and Copley instruments.
