"Students throw concert to fight childhood cancer"

"As teen band 2AM launched into a cover of My Chemical Romance's "Cancer" groups of students linked arms and swayed to 16-year-old Chelsea Meyer's throaty take on the popular band's haunting ode to losing someone to the deadly disease. The group made up of four Emmaus High School students was one of two generation-spanning bands to perform at the four-hour event to raise money for Alex's Lemonade Stand For Pediatric Cancer Research...Teens watched a slide show of photos of Alex in between dancing to 2AM's original tunes, which were written by Chelsea." - The Morning Call

Bio

At first it was a way to pass the time. Heavily inspired by bands like Green Day and My Chemical Romance as well as a host of bands from the 60s thru the millennium, two 13 year olds and an 11 year old began playing guitar and drums in their basement. Soon they had begun scratching out their own songs and playing at carnivals and school events – whoever would take them. They’d play for free. They called themselves 2AM. They were a pop punk rock band with a girl on lead guitar with a throaty voice reminiscent of Chrissie Hynde, Joan Jett, Pat Benatar or Gwen Stefani.

And 2006 became a turning point. They realized they were serious about the music. People started singing along to their original songs. So, they added a bass guitarist and rounded out the unique sound of 2AM. Six of their repertoire of original songs – these written by Chelsea -- have been recorded by CMC SOUND and are available on the band's first CD just released in Sept. 2006 - "Stud Belts, Skate Shoes and...a Skirt??? Yeah, We're a Band."

Okay – so what is it with that long CD title, you might ask? At first the band thought it was too long to work for them. But it really describes them as individuals in a comical sort of way. Take a look, listen, and you’ll see what we mean. Is the “Skirt” Chelsea? No. That’s Zach. And it’s a kilt, not a skirt.

Some of their songs are deep and longing. Hear “No Man Left Behind” – the first song they set to music – which was inspired by the death of an adult friend they admired. “Blame the Weatherman” is distinguished by strong three-part harmony and a unique set of lyrics. But we won’t tell you what the songs mean. You’ll have to figure that out for yourself.

In the summer of 2006, on a break from school, 2AM began to hit the clubs. Competing against much more mature musicians, 2AM came in 3rd out of 25 bands in one “Battle of the Bands. They were surprised at their appeal to adults as well as kids their age. And they continue to be surprised and revel in the pure fun of entertaining.
