Cash and the well-crafted melodies of Randy Newman, all carried by an old voice and accompanied by his percussive guitar playing.

His songs are coated in empathy and rich with history, with characters ranging from a victim of Hurricane Katrina to a Southern runaway, from a man on death row to a Union
soldier. He does have his share of love songs ?lled with the angst of youth, but unlike the ?owery and ?ighty ballads of his contemporaries, there's a believability born from
the almighty cliché of the shy, small town boy trying to make a life in the big city.
