Grammy nominated a cappella vocal arranger and producer Richard Bob Greene has always attempted to have his arrangements do “more with less” - to have the listener hear the full power and weight of the band, even though there’s no band playing. Vocals without instruments have an accessibility, an intimacy and a vulnerability that you just can’t achieve when you’re counting on guitars, basses and drums for support.

This CD takes that approach to the ultimate. With Angie’s warm, accurate, and intense soprano and Dan’s incredibly-rangy funky baritone/tenor, scatting and vocal percussion you’ll hear a fullness of sound that belies the fact that there are just two voices, no overdubbing and no multi- tracking. Melody, harmony, rhythm, meaning of the text, it’s all there ..... Along with some playfulness and vocal virtuosity that will have you grooving and asking yourself “How are they doing that?”

These twelve tunes include well known and less well known jazz standards from the ‘20s to the ‘00s, a rocker from Queen, a Joe Jackson ballad, and two Astor Piazzolla tangos - one of which has the bonus of Richard Bob singing a third (bass) part.

ABOUT US:

Angie Doctor, a studio singer and live performer who began her career in Chicago doing commercials, voice-overs and recording projects, has been a part of the San Francisco Bay Area vocal music community since 1995. Angie is a song-writer and arranger, vocal coach and clinician for school music ensembles and solo singers, background singer for groups such as The Manhattans, Heatwave, Gene Chandler, Barbara Lewis, Billy Paul, and many others, studio singer and voice-over talent and is the soprano in Clockwork. In addition, she has been singer and soloist for music projects with Sufjan Stevens, Sweet Honey in the Rock, John Zorn, Meredith Monk, performing at venues that include Zellerbach in Berkeley, Carnegie Hall and the Philharmonie Berlin; and most recently having performed with Bobby McFerrin in performances of his most recent recording “VOCAbuLarieS” in San Francisco and at Lincoln Center. Her vocal work can be heard on many recording projects, including as a featured soloist on the Grammy-nominated recording of Leonard Bernstein’s “Mass” (Harmonia Mundi), conducted by Kent Nagano. Angie is also a founding member of the Grammy-nominated PM Singers and has brought her extensive experience in solo and small group harmony singing to workshops and festivals as a judge and clinician over the past fifteen years.

Dan Schumacher, born in Cheyenne, Wyoming, studied at the University of Northern Colorado where he won the Vocal Jazz Soloist Award. He also studied vocal performance and operatic technique at Indiana University in Bloomington where he founded the vocal band Monkey Puzzle. Dan now lives in Seattle, where he previously wrote, arranged and performed with the techno funk vocal group Kickshaw. Since 2004 Dan has been a member of the Bobs.

Richard Bob Greene is an award-winning composer, arranger, singer, writer, engineer/producer and educator. As the co-founder and creator of the nu-wave a cappella super group The Bobs, Greene "fractured and reconstructed the rules for vocal music," and is one of the foremost pioneers of contemporary a cappella. Nominated for a Grammy for his and Gunnar Madsen's a cappella arrangement of the Beatles "Helter Skelter," Greene's songs and arrangements are considered standards, sung by hundreds of groups around the world. He is the recipient of multiple songwriters' awards from ASCAP and the CARAs (the contemporary a cappella recording awards.) As a composer and librettist, Greene has received commissions from Lincoln Center, The Los Angeles Theater Center, the Minnesota Opera, the Goethe Institute, Oberlin Dance Collective, ISO Dance Theater, National Public Radio and many others. He has written music for the feature films "Breaking the Rules" "For Better or Worse" and "Man in the Moon" (the Andy Kaufman bio-pic) He was a vocal arranger for the 1995 Emmy Awards starring Jason Alexander. His compositions have appeared on network television, PBS, comedy central and HBO. He has been a regular musical commentator for NPR's "Morning Edition" His work with ISO and the Bobs is in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution.
