"WOULDN'T IT BE LUFFLEY!"

(In 'Live Music' with Mandy Nolan):
The Luffley Cafe on the corner of Wharf & Commercial in Murwillumbah have been supporting live music for some time. Monthly, Saturday nights they have live dance music and since July this year, every Friday night they have featured live jazz acts for their dinner patrons. Two of the regular Friday night acts feature Kel Macintosh on saxophone and his trio, and every other Friday Mohini Cox appears on keyboards and vocals. Kel's nights often feature Izzy Foreal and Pete Hurcombe from Hillbilly Blues. Although the jury is out about the name of this act, one thing is for sure: the public enjoy their mix of jazz, skiffle and blues music. If you are looking for an entertaining Friday night out with great food, an easy stroll from parking to being seated, with fun entertainment, then book into Luffleys while you are thinking about it! Kel's Jazz Canaries play Luffley Cafe on Friday December 19 from 7pm, and as The Hillbilly Blues Bandits on Sunday December 28 at The rails in Byron and Sunday Januray 4 at the Aussie Tavern in Murwillumbah. - Tweed Shire Echo, Dec 18, 2008

Bio

Winners of 2008 Australian 'Dolphin' songwriting awards (Blues Song of the Year) for 'Coo Coo', from their album.

The Hillbillies are a trio playing live Blues and Rockabilly music on the Northern NSW circuit. The band was formed by Scrubby Pete Hurcombe in 2005 as an outlet for his love of the prewar blues slide guitar players from the 20’s & 30’s and the hard electric edge of the 50’s Blues styles based on Muddy Waters & Howlin Wolf with a twist of the magic of the Rockabilly legends from the same period like Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis & others.

Sadly in August 2007, the long-term musical partner of 'Scrub' in the Hillbillies and over the past 20 years, Dennis Gale AKA Rollin “D” Gale, passed away after a hard fought battle with the effects of leukemia.

The Hillbillies are a hard working band & are recovering from their loss of a great mate, & they are still chasing the illusive music circuit on the Northern Rivers. Right now the band has a CD featuring originals from both Scubby Pete & Rollin D. Their award winning CD is available at all gigs they play.

HILLBILLY BLUES BANDITS TAKE ALL THE TREASURE AT NCEIA DOLPHIN AWARDS IN THE BLUES CATEGORY.

Local musician Dennis Gale has won posthumously the Blues Song of the year at the North Coast Entertainment Industry Association Dolphin awards night held in Lismore on Wednesday 30th April 2008. The song 'Coo Coo' was written & sung by Dennis who took out top place in the awards. Also from the Hillbillies Band “Scrubby” Pete Hurcombe was the runner up with his composition 'One Ticket'. "This is a big achievement for one band to get two nominations out of a three place final" said Peter Hurcombe. "It was very sad to lose Dennis last August but it was wonderful for his family to receive this award." The other finalist in the blues category was Marshall and the Fro successfully based in Melbourne these days with their song Sweet Lips. (For more information on NCEIA go to www.nceia.org.au).

The Hillbilly Blues Bandits write much of their material but draw from a wealth of ideas dating back to the start of the 1900s.

Scrubby Pete Hurcombe plays white-hot guitar & vocals. He has played everywhere from Sydney to Coolangatta, Birdsville & Oodnadatta to Fitzroy Crossing, Derby & Broome & Bamaga at Cape York.

Izzy Foreal, frontman, vocalist & bass-player from the Legendary Zarsoff Brothers has now joined the Hillbillies and is contributing his skills to the line up. You can look him up on the web in many places! The Zarsoffs were renowned throughout the 1980s for their bizarre onstage antics. Although he smells of success, Izzy is quite a nice chap really!

Peter Jaggle (PJ), Director of DrumOz Percussion Solutions, obviously plays percussion on just about anything! He has composed film soundtracks & conducted workshops all over Australiasia and internationally. PJ has been endorsed and supported by most of the big names in percussion, including: Zildjian, Premier, Sabian, Meinl, Mapex, Toca and Eco.
