Summary

Java With Javelyn Indie Music Nite is an event helping to build an indie music community in LA and beyond, by encouraging artists to help other artists through doing their work, and hanging out with some of the best artists indie music has to offer. They're seeking to provide an enjoyable, eclectic independent music experience for the listener, as well as networking artists with each other. The event takes place 3rd Saturdays at the Unurban Cafe in Santa Monica, CA and periodically at The Talking Stick in Venice, CA. They also have added a "Gospel Showcase" event every 2nd Sunday at the Talking Stick (please specify if you would like to be considered for this as well)

Selected artists receive:

  • PA system with up to two microphones, a monitor and plenty of plug-ins and someone working sound.

  • Solo artist or bands get 3 songs (up to 15 minutes) the first time around. If you have following in So. Cal. and show you can bring them to your performance, then you can come back a second time for a full set. Every artist booked at a JWJ event has to come, play a few tunes first in order to be eligible for a full set. On regular sets, artists get 30 minutes.

  • They generally book the smaller sets at the front of the evening, with the headliners following up, and sometimes a small set or two at the end of the night.

  • There is no compensation for this event, but all artists may freely sell their CDs and merchandise.
Java With Javelyn is looking to involve more artists in the independent music experience in Los Angeles including incorporating touring/out-of town talent with locals who would like a place where they don't have to 'pay to play' in Los Angeles on a Friday or Saturday night. They also would like to inspire the local talent in LA to 'think more indie', and cross-pollinate with acts who are not homegrown, but actively workin' it. JWJ is a series that helps bring together the new industry of hard-working independent artists, who survive by helping each other out and having a professional attitude when it comes to the business of music and marketing. They also offer 'goodie bags' with giveaways from artists playing the event and our sponsors.

In between the live acts, JWJ features a mix of selected recordings from independent music artists off the latest Java With Javelyn Indie Music, Volume 4 compilation CD. They try to provide time between acts for people to mix and talk via indie music/shows/ recording, etc. and to sell CD's and gather new fans for their email lists and music. Each venue holds around 50-75 people, with room outside to hang out and still hear the music inside.

Terms And Conditions

The Java With Javelyn Indie Music Nite event starts at 6:30 p.m. with a check-in sheet. The show starts at 7:00 SHARP! YOU MUST LOAD IN BY OR BEFORE 6:30 P.M. TO PERFORM. If you are an out-of-town/touring act, we give 15 minutes for solo acts and 20 minutes for bands the first time around, usually at the 7:15 pm time slot.  We only give one of these slots away, so please do not send your kit or tell us any dates you are available, unless you are available and will be there.  One nice thing about our event is that there is no pressure to bring following if you do a short set.  This is rare in a town of pay to play venues.  If you want to do a longer set in the future, we do have a small minimum requirement of at least five people if you are a solo act (7:30 slot - 30 minutes) and ten people if you are a group (9:00 slot - 40 minutes). In return, we split 50% of the cover charge three ways between the three main acts.  If you cannot guarantee some following of your own, you can still come back again and do a small set with us at a later date, as long as we have room in the schedule.   The event cover charge is very cheap, parking is free, and there are no drinks/food minimum, and you get a little gas money in return, so it' s 'easy on the fan base' and fun for your supporters - a 'win-win' for everybody, hopefully.  We also raffle promotional goodie bags at each event.  We give away 2-4 bags per event. If you are performing and have something you would like to add to the "goodie bag", let us know and we'll make room for you in one of the upcoming JWJ shows... You will need to give us at least 5 merch's. They can be stickers, keytags, CDs, hats, t-shirts, shot glasses, whatever you have to promote yourself if you're at that level... as it brings repeat customers for the event to make it better for everybody as we're building a crowd of 'listeners' and future fans for everybody... Lastly, if you confirm to perform and do not show, then we will put you on the "no show" list, which we share with some of the other prominent promoters/bookers in town - so be professional, PLEASE - or do not book yourself for our event, as we are raising some of the bar in independent music.  On a positive note, we have passed along references when people ask us for talent to play other places, or referrals for gigs, so you never know who is watching...
