"Singer Lahla-Hadiya Shares Her Thought's At Blues Alley"

Neosoul singer Lahla Hadiya rocks her 6-month-old baby in her arms while talking about her musical style, the songs she writes along with her husband, brother and brother-in-law, and her upcoming appearance at Blues Alley on Sunday night.
"We keep it all in the family," she said. My husband helps me out a lot; we're both in the music industry and we have both learned to juggle being parents and spouses while combining that with being artists."

As mother to five children, this former police officer feels she has found her true calling and now, two things are a certainty in her world -- family and music.

"I've been singing all my life; I came from a singing background," Lahla, 32, explained in reference to her parents, who both performed. "So I guess it was inevitable."

Inevitable, too, is the spiritual aspect to her music that runs like a cool stream down the banks of an often rocky childhood. She admits to bumps in her personal life and being able to record them in song.

"A lot of my songs are my testimony; struggles I believe we all go through," she continued. "I'm able to utilize what I've been through [and] I've learned how to put everything in its place."

Her husband, Johnnie Castro, is also her musical director and the bass player in her band, called the Tone of Lah.

"As she relates to love, life and motherhood, Lahla is able to make you laugh, dance and cry, all in one show!" he noted.

Lahla has placed all of her musings in an album called "My Thoughts Vol. 1."

She lays out her life's experiences like a beautifully set table of original songs such as "The Difference," "Chemistry," "Give Me a Chance" and "Our Story."

Hadiya will be joined onstage by her band, drummer Dwayne Holton, percussionist Keven Holmes, lead guitar player Dokun Oke, keyboardist Brandon Wilkes, two respected session players, saxophonist Eric Silvan and trumpet player Akio Davis, and finally, husband and bass player Castro.

As can be expected after "Vol. 1," "My Thoughts Vol. 2" is not far behind in its release date, and Hadiya plans to give Blues Alley audiences a taste of that compilation as well. The material will not be hard to guess at.

"Everything has its purpose," she said. "My family comes first, aside from having God in my life. "After that ... there's my musical style -- R&B with a spiritual twist and a little bit of jazz flavoring." - Marie Gullard
