"Local CD review: "Lei Row presents Euphoria""

Don’t let Lei Row’s appearance on her new CD cover fool you.

Her blowout coiffure might suggest that she’s a neo-soul artist, but Row says her style is more R&B and pop. However, a former neo-soul club helped to mold her. “I was able to touch the mic before it went down,” she recollects about The Five Spot, a legendary venue formerly based in Philadelphia. “Philly brought out the performer in me.”

The Five Spot gave birth to careers of neo-soul stars such as Jill Scott, India.Arie, Jazmine Sullivan and musiq. Row performed there while she studied as a grad student at Drexel University. In 2007, a fire destroyed The Five Spot. The Harrisburg-based singer/songwriter/producer says she began honing her writing skills after that tragedy. Today, her and local singer Dexter Kendrick pen songs and produce through their company called Polarity. Before forming Polarity and performing in Philly, Row sang in church and in a local group named Untitled. The group was a protégé of the 90s group Tre Sons from Harrisburg.

Row credits her signing experience and feelings when talking about her new mixtape Euphoria. “I was inspired by my own broken heart,” she admits. She borrows beats from the late great producer J. Dilla on “Luvwounds” on “Luvstruction.” Her vocals ride the beats effortlessly on those songs. Row loves how Dilla succeeded at producing and rapping. “I’m a hip-hop fanatic—but I can’t rap,” she says while grinning. To show her passion for hip-hop, she allows rappers Mon E. Millions and K. Wills to spit on Euphoria.

Local producer Aganee provides a pounding bassline on “Slowtime,” one of the best songs on the disc. Row sings about heartbreak on “Slowtime.” “Smoking and drinking is all I do/To help me recollect and think things through …” Producer F. Silver and producer/writer/rapper Grip join Aganee on “Micromanagement,” a banger about a significant other who is a control freak. “I can’t take this sh*t no more,” Row vents on “Micromanagement.” The singer uses beats from other hits, including Melanie Fiona’s “If It Kills Me.” Like Fiona, Row wears her heart on her sleeve on this breakup song (“Happy Now”).

With a solid mixtape (and ill album art—props to photographer Michelle G.), Row proves that she’s not going to pigeonhole herself in just one musical genre. - Leon Laing of Vigoronline: Urban Music & Culture

"NonStopInfo.Com’s “Artist of The Month”: Lei Row"

Lei Row is an up-and-coming singer/songwriter/vocal producer (originally) from Harrisburg, PA. She has a familiar story on how she got started. She’s been singing since she was a little girl and her main foundation and influences come from growing up in the church. During her teenage years, Lei Row was a part of an R&B girl group called “Untitled” who were the protege group of a then popular R&B male group “Tre Sons.” Through this experience, Lei Row was introduced to the arts of song-writing and vocal production and hasn’t stopped since!

Through the years, Lei Row has performed in different concerts, musical plays, and talent showcases. Back in 2006, Lei Row would perform in the Wednesday Night showcases at the renowned Philadelphia Old City music and dance club “Five Spot.” Lei Row and the live house band rocked out together, keeping the crowd moving! Inspired by consistent positive feedback and reviews from audience members, Lei Row realized that it was time to take all of her musical talents to an even higher level. Since then, she has worked with several artists, writers, and producers in New York City, Miami, the DC-Maryland-Virginia area, Harrisburg, Lancaster, and Philadelphia: writing, singing, vocal producing, and/or performing.

Currently, Lei Row is a “featured” singer/songwriter in the Bad Boy Jack Knight Songwriting Academy under the very talented Bad Boy super producer/singer/songwriter/hitmaker Jack Knight. Jack Knight has written and produced for artists/musical inspirations such as Faith Evans, P. Diddy, Keyshia Cole, Christina Aguilera, Tamia, and Carl Thomas, just to name a few.

Lei Row is also hard at work on her first album entitled “Lei Row presnents…EuPhOrIa.” Her single “In Love Again” was recently featured on NYC’s HOT 97 “Twitter Unsigned Tuesday” hosted by J. Medina. She was also a finalist in the Melanie Fiona & Loud.com singer-remix contest where contestants had to write and demo an original piece to Ms. Fiona’s (song) “It Kills Me” instrumental. Lei Row has also been recognized as a talented up-and-coming singer/song-writer by “Suavv Magazine” and “Sound-Savvy: The Community for True Fans of Real Music.”

Lei Row’s album is scheduled to be out this December, just in time for the holidays, so please be on the look out! With the new album 90% complete, she’s already looking forward to networking and collaborating even more with other singers, writers, producers, rappers, and poets for future projects.

Lei Row is very inspired by musical artists like Chaka Khan, Michael and Janet Jackson, Eric Clapton, Prince, Whitney Houston, Faith Evans, Mary J. Blige, Lauryn Hill, Brandy, Monica, Keyshia Cole, Beyonce, Pink, The Clark Sisters, Kim Burrell, Phyllis Hyman, The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Donny and Lalah Hathaway, Luther Vandross, The Notorious BIG, Tupac, Sarah Vaughan, and Billie Holiday just to name a few.

Although R&B, Gospel, and Pop are her musical backbones, she is versatile and does not confine her taste or projects to one genre…hip-hop, jazz, rock, country, classical, opera, reggae, latin, electronic: she studies, loves, embraces, and incorporates it all. Thanks for stopping by and learning a little more about Lei Row.

"You Ain't Nobody Until...You Make A Mixtape...Part One. (Sunday, June 20, 2010)"

Here a Mix Tape, There a Mix Tape, Everywhere a Mix Tape.

The mix tape phenomenon has been prevalent for years. Unsigned artists or DJ's compile songs and distribute to the masses without the promo and traditional hoopla created with the release of commercial LP's. However, the art of releasing freebies is no longer limited to those without massive contracts and has become somewhat of a necessity to stay relevant in a game that releases (and leaks, i.e. Drake, Thank Me Later) more new music per day than Tupac did post mortem.

While I feel it safe to say that the beloved Mix Tape, and free music in general (hooray!), are here to stay, I find it quite intriguing that this tool is primarily used to hype commercial releases. Trey Songz, Lil Wayne, and the aforementioned, Mr. Drizzy Drake, have emphasized this with massive downloads of free music prior to the releases of their big label projects. The buzz created by the free-ninety-nine tracks pretty much secured chart worthy release figures.

With that, anyone trying to launch a career as an MC or songbird would do well to respect the Mix Tape hustle. I took to my twitter loves (follow me: @Chan_Lo) for advice on new business worthy artists. I received such a great response that I've decided to give you two a week...so much music, so little brain power. So, check below for installment one of independent joints worth checking out.

Happy Downloading.

Leirow Presents...Euphoria

Originally from Harrisburg, PA, Leirow brings a sweet voice to the table in this compilation. Eight songs complete the tape, three are definite downloads: "Blow Over", "Micromanagement" which is reminiscent of A. Keys' "Karma" and "Happy Now" which finds us with a familiar track made popular by Melanie Fiona with "It Kills Me."

Leirow's tone is brilliant and the tracks are well produced. Lyrical content left a bit to be desired however, the songs above help the tape recover nicely.

"Thorough Thursdays: Lei Row (Interview)"

Today we bring you something new and something fresh. We sat down with Lei Row to talk to her about her current project, what she has coming up, and what was on her plate. With a totally new look, a totally new sound, could Lei Row be the total package? Well after you read what we already know you might minimize some of your favorite singers, but add Lei Row.

Beenreal.com: What have you been up to lately?

Lei Row: Oh nuuun..just chillin...heard ya'll had sum gumbo!?! (*bruh man voice*) lolol!

Hey Real Ent Fam!!! I’ve been good…been on the multiple hustles...one being my music!

You know i got a cd out now rite!? ; - )

How ya’ll doin?

Beenreal.com: How did you come up with the name?

Lei Row: My name Lei Row? Well my full name is “Leilanda” and my last name is “Rowland” so I just took the first three letters of each name,
combined it, and TAA-DOW!! You have
“LeiRow”…the parts of my name that are a part of me!

Beenreal.com: So what stands Lei Row out from Keri Hilson or Patti Labelle (Drastic jump)?

Lei Row: DANG, this was a drastic jump lol…well I stand out from these two musical divas because I am LeiRow.

And standing out from Ms. LaBelle…hmmm…I don’t know how I feel about being categorized-n-contrasted with her…I have so much more to learn and do before I
could even get to her level!!! SHE’S
PATTI!!!

But on a serious note, I look up to them both and hope to stand WITH them one day as they are both musical inspirations of mine!!!

So thanks for the drastic jump afterall! Haha! : - )

Beenreal.com: When did you start singing?

Lei Row: Since I was a little girl. I didn’t begin to realize it until about 8 years old when I used to do the talent shows back in
elementary school: “Ben Franklin
Academic Prep” and at the best Harrisburg youth community program “The
Neighborhood Center”…REPRESENT-REPRESENT!!!
And of course I definitely give credit to The Black Church, “Mitchell
Memorial” and “Emanuel COGIC,” where I sang in the choirs and became more
skilled as a singer.

Since then, I’ve been singing non-stop.

Beenreal.com: Can you tell us more about Lei Row Presents Euphoria?

Lei Row: “Lei Row presents Euphoria” is my baby…this is my FIRST PROJECT!! I wrote all the songs, arranged them, and came up with my concept. There are 8 songs on the album, in which one is
an outro (explaining my view of “euphoria”).
The other producers on the album are Dennis “Aganee” Jenkins, Kevin
“Grip” Gripper, and Frank “The Tank” Silver…the best producers in HBG!!! I also have my music partner and talented
singer/songwriter/producer Dexter Kendrick on some background vocals and two
dope MCs from the Burg: Mon E. Millions
and K-Wills.

“Lei Row presents Euphoria” was largely inspired by my own broken heart and broken hearts of others around me.

When it all starts out in love, we tend to be in that state of AWE and BLISS because we’re so infatuated with that significant other; but if it all falls down, we can become
extremely disappointed and neglect to understand why that feeling of AWE is not
that feeling anymore. And many of us, ladies
especially, will still stick around to try and figure it out even when there’s no
point in sticking around any longer; thus, disappointing, frustrating, and/or saddening
ourselves even more.

To me, I saw euphoria as “a highly pleasant or elated feeling”...like being on “cloud-9.” But after awhile, don’t we all come down from a high? So, I compare euphoria to being
in love: it might start out that way,
but it doesn’t always stay that way…and if the love ends for good, it damn sure
doesn’t end that way. But eventually,
you’ll fall “in love again” so don’t stress it too much! ; - )

I was also inspired by the concept after listening to some teenage Michael Jackson cuts (always and forever my favorite musical icon).
It was a little bit after he passed and one of his songs “Euphoria” came
on the internet radio station I was listening to at the time. And everyone knows how cute Mike was and how he
always sang his heart out!!! And I felt
like I needed to do the same (and hopefully, I look cute too lol).

Losing our beloved king of pop was a major motivator for me to complete this project.

Beenreal.com: What is the future for Lei Row Presents Euphoria?

Lei Row: Well, I told myself and my team that I was going to make these different angles of love and pain work for my project. And thanks to their
faith in me, my faith in them, and all of our talents combined: “Lei Row presents Euphoria” is now available
for the world to hear!

I feel so blessed right now and very hopeful for the future. I still have ways to go; but I am hoping that the future will continue to open up more doors and allow me to grow even more
on a musical scale.

Beenreal.com: How are your fans taking to the project?

Lei Row: My fans, long-term and new, are definitely supporting me. They have been giving me great feedback and reviews on my music and sending new fans my way! As a result, I’ve also gotten more exposure
and recognition as a singer/songwriter beyond my local residence. I have been featured as an up-and-coming artist
and writer on different media and radio websites: nationally, and internationally. I have been able to build some of my fan-base
here in the states and across the globe…it’s so exciting!

Beenreal.com: Where can the fans get the project?

Lei Row: Currently, I have a FREE digital download available at www.datpiff.com…type in “Leirow” (all one word). Also, you can contact me via
email at Leirow@gmail.com for a hard-copy.

Beenreal.com: So what is next for Lei Row?

Lei Row: Well besides pushing my album, I have plans to travel more with my music. I am really feeling the love I’ve been shown on an international scale so far. I’m
still in the process of working out a solid plan; but best believe, that’s next
on the list. There’s so much talent,
love, and genuine appreciation for good music in far-away places…it’s great!!!

I would also like to collab with more artists, producers, and/or writers…especially at the major labels…I have so many ideas on the shelf that I would love to share. Lei Row is not selfish by far…I love to make,
share, and spread good music!

I used to play the piano as a teenager and have always wanted to pick that back up. OH, I am also a goof-ball by nature and love to act, so I’ve often thought about pursuing spoof-acting and comedy…lol!

But one thing at a time.

Beenreal.com: What do you have outside of music?

Lei Row: Well besides my music, I work in my career field I went to school for…higher education administration. So I stay in the loop
with college/university biz. Sometimes,
my job is cool because I get a chance to network with various leaders,
entertainers, educators, activists, musicians, etc.

Also, I have my family and friends who I love very much. I love spending time with them…they keep me grounded.

Beenreal.com: If someone wanted to book you or get a feature how can they contact you?

Lei Row: Email at Leirow@gmail.com, I am also on most of the networking sites Twitter: @Leirow and Facebook: Lei Row

I’m also on myspace: www.myspace.com/Leirow and music submit: www.musicsubmit.com/Leirow

THANK YOU!!!!! : - ) - BEEN R.E.A.L. (April 8, 2010 at 9:30 am)
