Java With Javelyn Indie Music Nite is an event helping to build an indie music community in LA and beyond that, encourages artists to help other artists. They're seeking to provide an enjoyable, eclectic independent music experience for the listener, as well as networking artists with each other. The event takes place every 1st Friday at The Talking Stick in Venice, CA and every 3rd Saturday at the Unurban Cafe in Santa Monica, CA.
Java With Javelyn is looking to involve more artists in the independent music experience in Los Angeles including incorporating touring/out-of town talent with locals who would like a place where they don't have to 'pay to play' in Los Angeles on a Friday or Saturday night. They also would like to inspire the local talent in LA to 'think more indie', and cross-pollinate with acts who are not homegrown, but actively workin' it. JWJ is a series that helps bring together the new industry of hard-working independent artists, who survive by helping each other out and having a professional attitude when it comes to the business of music and marketing. They also offer 'goodie bags' with giveaways from artists playing the event and our sponsors.
There is a pre-booked "open mic" portion at the beginning of each Nite with 2-4 artists performing 2 songs. 2-3 acts who are booked for the main sets from this portion are booked to come back at a future date. In between the live acts, JVJ features a mix of selected recordings from independent music artists off the latest Java With Javelyn Indie Music, Volume 2 compilation CD. They try to provide plenty of time between acts for people to mix and talk via indie music/shows/ recording, etc. and to sell CD's and gather new fans for their email lists and music.
There is a PA system with up to two microphones, a monitor and plenty of plug-ins and someone working sound. Each venue holds around 50-75 people, with room outside to hang out and still hear the music inside.
JWJ offers a place to come and do 2-3 songs, or if you are a band, they can offer you 15-20 minutes the first time around. If you have following in So. Cal. and can come back a second time, they can offer you a full set. Every artist booked at a JWJ event has to come, play a few tunes first in order to be eligible for a full set. On regular sets, bands get 25-45 minutes, solo artists 30 minutes.
The event at the Unurban Cafe is more free-form, "Artists For Artists" consisting of mini-sets all night long with a headliner at the end of each night. Some of the nights at the Unurban will be co-booked with another promoter to cross-pollinate with more indie music acts and promoters. Check the JWJ website for a listing of available nights to book with JWJ.
There is no compensation for this event, but all artists may freely sell their CDs and merchandise. It’s is a great place to expand your email lists and find new fans, as the listeners are very appreciative of good quality independent music.
