About The LGBT Academy of Recording Arts (LARA) home of the OUTMusic Awards:
OUTMusic is the premiere 501c3 non-profit organization created to empower and honor openly-LGBT recording artist and performers as well as advocate on their behalf to raise awareness of their contributions to music and entertainment history. Their mission is to end the longtime standard of the music industry that perpetuates homophobia and the stigma that’s associated with being openly gay in the industry, making another entry to the movement of equality.
OUTMusic was founded in 1990 by life partners Daniel Martin and Michael Biello to provide a safe and supportive environment for LGBT recording artists & performers to authentically express themselves.
In 2007, Daniel and Michael appointed Diedra Meredith, also known as recording artist Deepa Soul who volunteered to carry the torch for this generation. She has courageously and tenaciously taken on what many believed to be an insurmountable task. Diedra and the new Board of Directors helped to re-establish the LGBT Academy of Recording Arts -LARA- and in 2009, the Board revived the OUTMusic Awards after a two year hiatus.
The 2009 OUTMusic event had record breaking attendance of 2,000 attendees. The OUTMusic Awards television media sponsor, Logo TV of MTV Networks, helped the organization make history by airing the best moments of the 2009 OUTMusic Awards- reaching 40 million viewers. The awards had a host of other media sponsors via online, radio and live event producers across the nation.
