An international songwriting contest that began in 1997, the John Lennon Songwriting Contest is open to amateur and professional songwriters who submit entries in any one of 12 categories. The JLSC features two sessions - with 72 Finalists, 24 Grand Prize Winners, 12 Lennon Award Winners and 1 Song of the Year.
You don't need a professional recording. Entries will be judged on originality, melody, composition, and lyrics (when applicable). Your songs may be entered in any of the following categories: Rock, Country, Jazz, Pop, World, Rhythm & Blues, Hip Hop, Gospel/Inspirational, Latin, Electronic, Folk and Children's. Instrumental compositions are encouraged.
Natasha Bedingfield, Ryan Shaw, Fergie, Bob Weir, Jesse Harris, Teairra Mari, Lamont Dozier, Matt Pinfield, The Black Eyed Peas, The Bacon Brothers, Mike Pinder, Ken Komisar and The Veronicas are all members of the Executive Committee of Judges.
Winners, based on their level of achievement, will receive studio equipment from Gibson and Epiphone Guitars, Roland/Boss and Audio-Technica, The writer(s) of the "Song of the Year," the highest honor bestowed in the contest, will receive a $20,000 check, as well as a Mackie mixer, a pair of Mackie studio monitors, and a $250 gift certificate, for each band member, to Digital Media Academy. In addition to the songwriting prizes, one band is selected annually to TOUR and PERFORM on the Warped Tour for one week and will receive an Ampeg GVT Guitar Amp, publicity, radio marketing and strategic consulting services courtesy of Music Allies, and Creative Allies design contests showcasing the winning band, so they can win licensing to exclusive: posters, t-Shirts and pocket-size flyers.

- Madison Violet - "The Ransom" recently named 2009 Song of the Year Having also won the 2009 Canadian Folk Music Awards for Vocal Group of the Year, Madison Violet has gone on to become 150 amongst the top 200 best bands of all times at WDRW Radio in Cologne, one of the biggest stations in Europe. Madison Violent has also been recognized as the top 5 singer/songwriter albums on iTunes in Canada.
- Measure - 2009 Electronic Finalist- "Begin Again", Measure's debut EP released late April of 2008, is immediately accessible, vulnerable, and honest. Measure's winning song 'Begin Again' has been featured on Melrose Place, a promo for NBC show 'Mercy', and their song 'End of Everything' can be heard on a televised Public Service announcement featuring Morgan Freeman.
- Colourslide - 2007 Song of the Year- Colourslide released their eponymous debut, which quickly went to number one at Awarestore.com. The record received extensive radio airplay throughout the south and was subsequently licensed to ESPN, MTV, Oxygen and E!. To date it has received over thirty television spots with many millions of viewers.
