The WAM Song Of The Year is a prestigious songwriting competition open to all West Australians and in its 24 year history.

Please note: This listing is for Western Australians that aren't current WAM members. WAM members should submit using the listing for WAM Members.

Unpublished West Australian songwriters can enter their compositions in 11 genre categories, 2 special categories and 2 bonus categories, all with prizes of $500 cash plus one day of recording time in a professional recording studio and additional prizes. There are also 2 school age categories with prizes of $500 musical equipment gift vouchers.

The genre categories consist of Blues / Roots, Country, Electronic (any song that employs electronic musical instruments and electronic music technology in its production), Experimental (any song using unusual instrumentation, or traditional instrumentation in unusual or uncharacteristic ways and experimental in terms of its composition), Folk, Heavy (this category is for Metal, Punk, Death, Mathcore and everything in between), Jazz, Pop, Rock, Urban / Hip Hop, and World.

The two school age categories are 14 years and under, and 15-17 years.

The one special category is Mentally Healthy, for songs dealing with positive message relating to mental health.

There are two bonus categories, if applicable, your song/s will be automatically entered into these categories as a BONUS entry.

Outstanding Indigenous is open to the artists who have identified themselves as Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander songwriters during the entry process. All Indigenous entries will be automatically entered into this category as a BONUS entry. For physical entries, do NOT select Indigenous as a Category on the entry form. If you have ticked the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander box we will automatically add it into this category.

Outstanding Regional is open to all songwriters outside of Brisbane. All regional songwriters will automatically be entered into this category as a BONUS entry. Please ensure you provide your postcode so we can enter you into this category if you qualify. For physical entries do NOT select Regional as a category on your entry form.

The winners of all of the above categories will go into the judging for the Grand Prize. The Awards Night takes place on Thursday 10 October 2013 at the Fly By Night Musician Club in Fremantle.

Song critiques by industry judges are available for $20 USD per song.

Eligibility:
The contest is open to both WAM members and non-members. Non-members can purchase a WAM membership along with their submission. Please see the submission options on the right for more information.

Existing WAM members and those artists who purchase WAM memberships with their submissions are eligible for special pricing where their first 3 songs are entered for the price of 1 (30 $USD). Each additional song thereafter can be entered for 30 $USD each.

If you are an existing WAM member and want to access the special pricing, please go to the "My Affiliate Accounts" tab in the Edit Profile section of your account to validate your WAM membership.

Submissions in the 2 school age categories (Under 14 Years or 15 – 17 Years) is 5 $USD per song. However, entrants aged under 18 years who wish to submit in the genre categories (eg. Rock, Pop, Country, Blues / Roots etc) must pay the full fee (30 $USD)
