Now in celebrating its fifth year, Pygmalion Music Festival will again be taking Champaign-Urbana by storm this fall. Over the course of four days, September 16–19, Krannert Center for the Performing Arts and Nicodemus Agency will be presenting over 15 different shows in up to seven different venues.
2009 will continue to develop the changes to the festival seen last year, by keeping the majority of the venues located within 5 minutes of walking distance from each other. Attendance is expected to double (or more) this year, with crowds reaching up to 5,000 over the course of the weekend. Venues include Krannert Art Museum, Red Herring Restaurant, Blues Barbecue and they will be joined by festival stalwarts, The Canopy Club and Krannert Center for the Performing Arts.
Three performance slots have been allotted for Sonicbids artists, although last year, eight SonicBids artists were offered festival slots. Artist compensation depends solely on the area draw and history, although all artists will be compensated. The festival does not provide lodging. Past performers include Yo La Tengo, Of Montreal, Andrew Bird, Okkervil River, Mates of State, Man Man, Dan Deacon, Yeasayer, Headlights, Black Mountain, etc etc.
Champaign-Urbana has a rich and diverse history as a nationally recognized music scene, and with the advent of a world-class music festival, it seems like anything is possible.
Sponsors include Miller High Life, Jack Daniels, Red Bull, Urban Outfitters and Sonicbids.
