Gig Overview

The Susquehanna Music and Arts Festival is a non-profit organization whose primary purpose is to promote awareness and appreciation of traditional and contemporary folk music and arts. Now in its ninth year, the festival has been celebrating the talents of local, national, and international musicians through its internationally recognized Songwriters Contest. The Susquehanna Music and Arts Festival Songwriting Contest was created as part of the festival and has been in place since the festival’s inception.

Susquehanna Music and Arts Festival is seeking submissions for both the Songwriters Competition and General Booking consideration for the festival itself. This year's festival will be held on May 7-9, 2010 in Havre de Grace, MD. There will be 4 stages with an Harford County/Maryland artist stage. Artists selected for general booking at the festival will be provided with cash compensation, housing and meals. At least 8 slots will be reserved for Sonicbids members.

Here’s how the Songwriters Competition works:

First, a committee of Songwriters, promoters, radio professionals and members of the festival committee will select a group of 8-10 finalists from all of the submissions received.

Those 8-10 finalists are then given a performance slot at the festival where their performances are judged by a panel of three judges. Typically one judge is from radio, another is a writer in the music field and the third is a professional songwriter. Past judges include Rich Warren (from WFMT), Susie Mudd (editor of Music Monthly), Anne Feeney and SONiA among others.

Cash prizes are rewarded to the first, second and 3rd place winners of the competition.

Past winners of this prestigious contest include Erik Balkey ('07), John Seay ('06), and Zoe Mulford ('05). Many of the contest’s winners have gone on to headline other festivals and make a name for themselves.
