"SHAPES"

Brooklyn's SHAPES are a band you want to listen to when you want to be in a good mood and jubilantly sing songs about "anarchy!" Yeah! Anarchy is always so happy! You could label this infectious pop as being "raucous," but we try not to use that word because it’s super hard to spell, and why waste time with spell check when you could be blaring SHAPES and getting your party on?

SHAPES are a rip roaring, fun band for bright places with balloons and streamers, for marathon whisky sessions, for positive aggression, for sloppy sing-a-longs, for the last day of school, for forgiving yourself for all you have left to accomplish, for your sisters and your bros, for finding new reasons to procrastinate, for mad hops, for forgetting your shirt, and for everyone who ever said today was the first day of the rest of their life.

Oh yeah, they're also for fans of Titus Andronicus perhaps. Get into SHAPES, and don't ever, ever, let anyone tell you that you're not cool for caring. - Oh My Rockness

"Shapes and Yvette 04/30/11 Live at Pianos"

Local bands Shapes and Yvette opened for Mr. Dream at Pianos last night. Shapes’ frontman Fanelli may have thrown around f bombs liberally while singing songs about anarchy but he didn’t forget to dedicate a few tunes to his mum, who was in the audience. Yvette, on the other hand, blew our faces off with their pedal-heavy, creepy (the good kind) noise rock. But underneath all that aesthetic abrasion were melodic moves. Make sure to check out both bands. - Kristen Kim - The Morning After Pills

"SHAPES w/ Mr. Dream, Yvette, and Young Adults"

SHAPES are a punk band in the classic sense: they're raw, they're fierce, they're loud. As singer Fanelli spits and snarls his way through the band's catalogue — songs thematically equal parts teenage rebellion and existentialist longing — the band often falls apart and comes back together like that one great Libertines album. And then, sometimes, they get naked. SHAPES are a glam-punk shot of noise and swagger. They're the shattering of the system's shackles that's inside us all. - Russ Marshalek, Flavorpill

"NYC Glam-Punk SHAPES"

NYC—Even in the most dispiriting of times, you can always depend on NYC for spawning intriguing musicians and edgy bands. In the 1970s the city engendered the twin ardor of punk rock and disco. The eighties gave birth to ‘glam metal’ and new wave. The nineties heralded alternative rock and electro bands, etc. And the tumult of the past few years has had a similarly energizing effect as artists have had to fight for visibility and stay focused in the face of grim circumstances and a cut-throat industry.

NYC in particular continues to be a superb incubator for fledging indie bands—no matter how gritty and raw—striving to redefine the parameters of what constitutes beautiful noise. No doubt certain acts will end up more successful than others, but one band called SHAPES recently caught my attention and has been making quite a name for itself in the city‘s alternative/punk space.

SHAPES are an exuberant glam-punk rock band fronted by one of the loudest, rarest raucous causers, Andrew Fanelli (who prefers to be called just Fanelli). With impeccable sartorial sensibility (bright monochrome tights, wild makeup reminiscent of Billie Joe Armstrong and stiletto heels are his trademarks), Fanelli delivers both fast fashion flair and freaky, rough-around-the-edges musical theater. He’s no newcomer to the music scene: he’s been writing angsty songs since the beginning of the decade and has recorded vocals and played numerous shows at some of NYC’s coolest venues (including CBGB and Webster Hall). He cites a diverse range of artistic influences: Robert Smith, Brittany Spears, Kylie Minogue, Glenn Danzig and The New York Dolls, to name a few.

Fanelli and his bandmates, Asher Bodie, Eamon Wagner, Mark Fletcher, Eli Moose and Julia Monk, who formed SHAPES back in 2003, make music for outcasts, DIY scenesters and tortured adolescents. But the songs are supremely exhilarating, palpable, raw and trebly. The music itself marries rebellious punk with elements of SKA, electronic and a potent dose of nihilistic rage (there‘s a track called Fuckunt that‘s about the loss of innocence through carnal, lecherous intercourse).

SHAPES have tapped into a sound that gets into your bloodstream and floods it with maniacal energy. The song Whackness resonates particularly well amongst unruly and discordant youths, and is about a romance gone violently awry (about a rape, drugs and tons of existential angst and apathy, of course). And considering the group’s growing popularity, SHAPES are enjoying an unstoppable momentum in and around NYC, not to mention a seemingly unquenchable thirst for alcoholic beverages, fast shredding guitar riffs and a gritty-cool wardrobe.

What makes SHAPES a compelling music proposition is their aggressive mid-tempo anthems and diverse sonic chaos. The band’s ongoing flirtation with dark motifs and their gutter-glam iconoclasm recalls Titus Andronicus and The Cure for dissonant harmonies and fractured notes. Fanelli’s relentless drive and aggressive angular rhythm makes him a great agent of catharsis during shows. Another cool quality is that SHAPES remains staunchly independent while selling out concerts and maintaining their incendiary, raw and dynamic sound and look.

Anyhow, the peculiar mix of volatile energy and glam punk makes for tantalizing anti-social music. Think Trainspotting meets The Clash with a whiff of Green Day. The sounds emanating from their recent surly album, I Feel…Therefore, I Drink (produced by Adam Reich), are perfectly suited soundtracks for those with a proclivity for misanthropic behavior and the ‘recession blues.’ In addition, SHAPES brilliantly compliments other lineups at the pulpy PERSONALITY CRISIS—an ongoing platform for NYC’s indie misfit bands and rockers to convene under one roof. SHAPES are a seriously cool band—a must see live-act sure to elevate your blood pressure. - StylishKidsInRiot (Cody Ross)

"NYC Punk SHAPES play Cake Shop"

Touting their music as gutter glam, the nightcrawling NYC sextet known as Shapes embody the sounds of the DIY hipster rock scene while showcasing a freewheeling buoyancy which permeates across their raucous five-track offering I FEEL…THEREFORE I DRINK. Commencing contagious melodies with a garage rock engine pumping out The Stooges’ attitude, My Chemical Romance’s catchiness and the The Ramones’ simplicity blended with a shot of punk pizzazz via Dead Boys and Sex Pistols, this troupe keeps the energy level at fever pitch and still hold it all together musically, fueling their odes to after hours with whatever substance they can get their paws on and a side order of the down and dirty rock ‘n roll that made NYC infamous (“Bash!”). You can see Shapes live at Cake Shop on 12.17. - Mike SOS - The Deli Magazine (Mike SOS)

Bio

Fanelli began SHAPES in 2003. Gutter-glam. A true melding of pop and punk, sans penis and fart jokes. Brutally honest and ugly lyrics set to undeniably poppy music. Songs of love and death. This music is the sound of yearning. An earnest, sober (sometimes... but not too often), & mournful acceptance that life will never be what you want it to, tempered by an undying youthful exuberance and acceptance of nothing. It is the sound of going down drinking and swinging. SHAPES, will forever go anything, but gentle(!), into that good night. SHAPES is made up of Fanelli (vocals), Mark Fletcher (lead guitar), Eamon Wagner (rhythm guitar), Asher Bodie (bass), Julia Monk (tambourine and synthesizer), and Eli Moose (drums).
