"Interview w/ BigT of SouthernBoi Ent"

SOUTHERN BOI from Port Gibson, USA.

When did you get into the rap game?

Man, I've been rapping for years, I just didn't take it to the next level until around 2001

What would you consider to be your biggest influence musically?

My struggle, my family, Da South!!! period

What would you consider to be the reason why you rap?

At first,it was just something i was pretty decent at, but when Artists like EightBall & MJG, U.G.K,& Goodie Mob came out, it really hit home. From that point I knew I had the potential to be great, but at the same time i was in the streets too.

Where are you from and has anybody ever blew up on a big level from this area?

Im from a small town in Mississippi called Port Gibson, aka (P.G.)....Pimps and Gangstas!!! When I was coming up,the only artists that was rapping from Mississippi was "Mississippi Mafia" & "Wildlife Society" out of Jackson. Those were our local Heros at the time. But when I went to college @ Southern Univ (Baton Rouge,LA)...It opened up a whole new door for me. At the time I was in School, "Daivd Banner" was actually our SGA President at the time. I didnt even know he was rapping or from the same state I was. About a year later I found out he had a album out and I saw him in a Lil' John Video!!! So I was like "DAMN"... I gotta get my weight up!!

What CD's have you released and what has the response been like?

Well in 2001 we release our 1st LP "We In Da Last Dayz". It was only about 8 tracks deep too ..(laugh) . But the response that we got from it was far better than I thought. I had to admit too, the quality could have been alot better, but for a first effort, we moved over 1,300 copies hand to hand, and through the internet. In 2004 we release our first mixtape "Missing Episode Vol1." Now that cd, we gave mostly out for free. We went around doing shows off of that mixtape!!! That was the one that really got people paying attention to us. I actually did all the beats myself for the mixtape. We ended up moving almost 3,000 copies off the sh*t! Its a new day now pimp! We got better beats, lyrics, and concepts, and a team who's talented. We got alot of projects in 2006, so its beautiful right now.

Have you been doing many shows, if so any funny groupie stories!?

Yeah! lol, I glad you mentioned that!! Man since we've been working on the new album & mixtape, we havent been doing any shows in the past 3 months, but there was this one show...we were down in Cambridge,MD for a gig, and the show was crazy as usual, but I could have sworn we were america'a most wanted that night. Man we had to escape to Van to dip back to the hotel, we were followed about 8 different times. It was this one minivan full of women speeding up on us around 4am with no lights on. Every turn, every alley, every corner we took, they took!! The driver thought he shook them...so when we pulled in the Hotel (Dont ask me How they knew which one) but they beat us there!!! They all jumped out at one time, and rushed us. By that time 2-3 more cars pulled up with folks jumping out!! LOL I thought the sh*t was about to go down. Security ended up having to pull they guns on them. Its was the funniest thing I ever seen in my life. You would have thought we were Cash Money or somebody!!

So what is your main aim for 2006?

This will be the Biggest year for SouthernBoi Ent. yet!! We got 2 videos coming out...A album coming out "Welcome2Mississippi"..A mixtape "Untitled" & DVD. Plus a promising 30 city tour with Anhieswer Bush/Russell Simmons Music Group/Upscale Music Group, so like I say, You will have to deal with us sooner or later!!! OH!! I forgot to mention, We have our own weekly rap/hiphop radio show too...

How would you describe your style?

Man,Im a combination of things..kinda like gumbo (laugh). Im straight from Mississippi dont get me wrong, but during my Hustle years, I jumped from state to state to get moeny ,so I picked up certain things and cultures from these other places. So even though I sound like a typical Southern Rapper, Im versitile but with a tighter flow. I can rhyme almost over any track. I like to flow off of the track itself..kida like sex (laugh)..you gotta beat it up!!! I've gotten a few nicknames along the way too. I've been called "NEXT"..."Biggie Smalls of the South"...."Da Fix"..lol you name it!! But im just me pimpin....."BigT".

Any plans for any major collobarations?

Yeah... I got a few collabs in the works with some really good artists out of Texas,Mississippi,Baltimore...you name it!! Im still independent so I'll run with anyone who wanna run with me, ya dig!! I dont discriminate PERIOD!!! indie or major!

Is there any thing you'd like to mention or promote?

You DAMN right!! "Welcome2Mississippi" the album will be out by May2006...the mixtape "Untitled" as of right now, should be hitting the streets in about a month!! Also Every Tuesday from 5pm-7pm est. "Da Southern - Rago Magazine (UK)

Bio

Big T (Co-Ceo/ Rap Artist/ Radio Personality/ Writer/ Actor)
Southern Boi Entertainment

Port Gibson, Miss. - Big T is a rap/soul artist out of Mississippi. Big T is passionate about his music. He calls himself a street poet and yet still an average person from the neighborhood. When he writes, he writes about his life experiences, then transforms them into a lyrical wonder. His stories are told in a very dramatic fashion, giving people the reality of life in general, whether it be cruel or inspirational. “I once said at the beginning of a track; ‘Meger Evers, or…Martin Luther, …or maybe Emmit Till –cause see I am the Future!’. I said that through the eyes of everyone who was part of the struggle.” There is meaning and a mission to his songs even if its "Trap" Musiz!

Inspirations in Big T’s life was his Grandmother. She raised him when no one else was around - looking into her eyes for a meaning of life, for guidance and inspiration. The passing of this remarkable woman in 2009 was the worst thing that could have happened to him and he’s been through a lot.

You can purchase his new releases on most istores, including but not limited to iTunes, Amazon,EMusic,Napster, BestBuy.com, Target.com and Rhapsody.
