"Spred The Dub"

With so many bands emerging on the reggae scene it can be difficult to create a sound so unique that people actually stop and listen. South Florida based Spred The Dub doesn’t only make you stop and listen, they make you dance.

They tend to shy away from the SoCal punk/reggae sound that seems to be so common these days and prefer to take things in a slightly different direction. Instead of cementing themselves in one genre they prefer to “add elements of dub, blues, ska, rock and surf,” says guitarist Corey Tyler.

“We have heavy dub influences that let us stretch out in many different musical directions and allows us to incorporate different styles,” explains bassist Kevin Johnson, “Because our sound is so eclectic, borrowing bits and pieces from so many genres, it’s not uncommon to see rastas, hippies, punks, hip hoppers, old folks and youngins all sharing the vibes at our shows.”

Formed in 2007 and after undergoing some “revisions” the band is putting the final touches on their long awaited studio album due out this fall. Lead singer Mick Swigert says “it’s a long time coming, but well worth it. We have a great mix of friends and talented musicians performing on the tracks and we're stoked about it.”

Dedicated fans will recognize some of the songs off the upcoming album but there are a few surprises. Johnson explains that “for the most part these are songs that we've been playing live for awhile and people who've seen us will be familiar with them, but at the same time we tried to use the studio to give them a fresh twist.”

For those lucky enough to have caught them live, they can tell you it’s quite the experience. You can almost always expect “spilt beer due to heavy dancing” says drummer Joey Bitton. And since they hardly make set lists and instead prefer to feed off the energy of the crowd, “you never know what you might get. No two shows are ever the same,” says Tyler.

With hopes to someday play with the likes of The Black Seeds, The Aggrolites, and The Slackers, they have big things in the works. A tour perhaps? “We’re hoping to hit the east coast and play some killer shows,” says Swigert. Johnson reassures us that “We're planning some stuff out so that we can bring this South Florida reggae sound to the people. It’s in the works”

Spred The Dub has always strived to bring fresh ideas to the table to ensure good music wasn’t far behind and it’s not going to stop anytime soon. Johnson explains, “this is just the beginning for Spred The Dub”

"(6/27/2009) Yellowman with Spred the Dub @ Respectable Street Cafe"

Local dub enthusiasts Spred the Dub were the ideal choice to warm up the crowd this evening. STD's rootsy rocksteady grooves proved to be as infectious as, well, a highly transmittable STD. (Pardon the pun, but it's rather on point for the night.) Frontman Micky Vintage delivers slick, smooth vocals that reverberate perfectly over his percussive rhythm guitar playing and his quartet's psychedelic-tinged reggae. And lead guitarist Boris Fingermon added an improvisational flair to each tune.
Besides playing some tasty originals, the boys pulled out a couple of fantastic covers: Bob Marley's "Get Up, Stand Up" and Sublime's "Get Ready." The band made each of these songs its own, never sounding as traditional as Marley nor as ska-punk-ish as Sublime. That's probably why STD is so damn catchy; they really have carved out their own spacey-reggae-with-a-rock-kick. - Miami New Times

"Dubble Your Pleasure"

While dubstep is fairly new and a form of its own, it certainly draws from the reverberated yet cleaner rhythm of Jamaican dub. Though closely associated with reggae, Jamaican dub lends its sub-bass and sometimes distorted sound to dubstep. Check out Spred the Dub, a Ft Lauderdale band that frequents downtown’s Fat Cats. With their smooth vocals and professional sound, you will not be disappointed by this band no matter what kind of music you like. Make sure you don’t miss their sweet cover of Chris Isaak’s Wicked Game. - FTL Collective

Bio

Formed in 2007, Spred The Dub has been keeping crowds dancing all over South Florida with their own brand of "Good Time Reggae" music - infusing elements of jazz, soul, funk and rocksteady with a foundation of dub, ska and roots reggae to create sonic landscapes and massive drum & bass riddems. They have been hard at work making a name for themselves, playing stages all over the state…from local beach bars to club venues, opening for national touring acts like Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad, Passafire, The Movement and reggae legends like The Skatalites, Eek-A-Mouse,Black Uhuru and Yellowman. Their sound is sure to get people in the groove!

Originally starting out as a weekly reggae jam night at a local venue in Palm Beach, the group has slowly but surely become a mainstay in the South Florida reggae scene. In their early years as a 12-piece ensemble featuring multiple percussion players and musicians, their music was based on improvisational jams and instrumental vamps. It was this "dub" sound that became the bands musical style and eventually lead to the name Spred The Dub.

Over time this massive group of players has evolved into a smaller core unit of members.
Mick Swigert (aka Micky Vintage) has been providing the reverberated vocals and rhythmic skank that have characterized STD's sound since the earliest days of the group. Newest addition Sam "How Ya Doin?" Szpendyk plays both trombone and keyboards, adding a much needed dimension to the sound. . Kevin "KJo" Johnson (bass) and Johnny "Fresh" Leonard (drums) are the rhythm section responsible for building a rock solid foundation of thundering riddems for lead guitarist/dub fx master Corey "Scrubs" Tyler to work his mad scientist guitar stylings over. Together these players gel into one of the freshest sounds in South Florida reggae. Their set list includes a host of well-crafted original songs which range from upbeat rocksteady rhythms to thick, soul-moving roots jams. These songs coupled with their unique renditions of modern classics and rejuvenated reggae standards, creates a show that is intriguing and true to the soul.

With several major projects in the works, the future for Spred The Dub looks very bright. Their weekly shows on Monday nights at Reef Road Rum Bar have turned the Clematis St. restaurant into the hottest reggae venue in West Palm Beach, and April 2012 they released their first studio EP. In addition to their regular schedule of shows throughout South Florida, you will also find them on the upcoming "Reggae Wave" compilation CD and tour featuring the best local reggae bands, sponsored by legends "Inner Circle".

This is the next chapter of Spred the Dub’s legacy, and with the new tunes, dubbed out covers, and hand-picked venues, you are sure to see why there will be plenty more "Good Times" to come.
