"OUTLAW is an anecdote to the current wave of ‘Mass Country’ (COUNTRY)"

by Thomas Spurling
Feb 27, 2006

For over thirty-five years, ‘OUTLAW’ Tommy Allred has been doing his own thing. His irreverent blend of country, swamp and dirty old delta blues has busted out everywhere from Colorado to Cologne, from seedy backwater bars to the veritable steps of Graceland.

Allred has travelled the back roads to providence. A pioneer of Memphis label, Sheddin’ Records, Allred founded the highly esteemed Denver-based group, Homegrown, back in 1978. His current track, One Fifth at a Time, is still alive in the International Songwriters Contest, having knocked out over ten thousand other entries. ‘OUTLAW’ is a man who lasts, and One Fifth at a Time is an irreverent ode to good whiskey and bad love. It marks the long-awaited break for this connoisseur of musical whimsy.

"...Allred shines through
like a Southern-fried Shane MacGowan."

‘OUTLAW’ is a soft-skinned hard man. Mississippi Moon (Boogie Man) is a haunting Walt Whitman-like hymn about late night rhythm in the deep swinging south. Down by the River is sadder than Nick Drake after midnight, taking the listener on a heartfelt country-pop swagger through seedy swamps of regret.

Has Anybody Seen is a disturbing gothic church-blues belter, and Allred shines through like a Southern-fried Shane MacGowan, his lonely soul stained with cheap booze and wisdom. The Alphabet Rock Solo flips your corpse upright though, with a catchy tap-along dusted-down instrumental. It’s all saloons and dancing girls and glimpses to a future with ‘OUTLAW’ Tommy Allred seated centre-stage left and smiling.

‘OUTLAW’ Tommy Allred is an anecdote to the current wave of ‘Mass Country’ – he’s a renegade songsmith who’s finally found his time.

Hey Tommy,
Really getting excited as I'm giving this film to the colorist tonight and we're moving along with all the audio fixes.
I can't say how perfect this song fits. We play it at the beginning of the film and at the end.

I should be able to send you a copy of the film in about a month or so Hopefully.

Attached is your contract. Just send it back when you can.

Bio

Hello and thank you for having a look at what I love to do. I have been playing music for over thirty-five years now, and I will never stop until my last breath of air.

Growing up in Memphis, Tennessee, I fell into the ring of music that over took me so fast it started producing new creative ideas for me, which I have always posessed, and now the ability to express them with a song.

Having been in the military I was able to perform live all over Germany at a young age, thanks to "Uncle Sam" and the Draft! That experience was enough to keep me striving in making the music better.

I formed a Top Five band in Colorado called "Home Grown" in the late seventies, and I quickly converted over to Country Rock, which I am still performing today.

I have countless stories about life that I write to fit many styles of compositions and hopefully they will become favorite songs for my listeners.

I will keep it short and say that "if I never get rich and famous, I have already succeeded in many of my goals" and I can only pray more good things will continue to happen . . .
