"Band Takes Different Course, Lights Up Stage"

A Course of Action, a band made up of members from the south who have now made their home in western North Carolina, opens for 1980’s hair band Winger on Friday in Hickory. “People hate putting labels on it, but I call it modern rock-alternative,” John Culberson, guitarist for A Course of Action said.

A Course of Action is a four-member band hailing from North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida. The band consists of Culberson on guitar and band mates J.T. Silvestri on drums, Wes Johnson on vocals and rhythm guitar, and Connelly Springs native, Jonathan Byrd on lead guitar. Of opening for Winger, Culberson said, “When I was younger, I liked those guys. It’s kind of cool getting to play with a national recording artist…you know you will get a crowd.” The band was recently featured on 106.5 The End radio station and has travelled playing for the armed forces across the world. “Regionally we’ve been doing this for a long time,” he said.

The band will play a set stemming from their “Dark Before Dawn” album.
“It’s a more polished sound that represents us,” Culberson said. The band works hard to produce that polished sound, even going as far as building their own recording studio. “We love what we do. It’s a very hard business to crack, especially in this economy. We are pushing ourselves very hard right now. We have built our own studio in Hickory,” Culberson said. Friday’s show will be a culmination of the band’s hard work before displaying their talents at an industry showcases Aug. 11 in Greensboro and Aug. 12 in Charlotte as part of The Exposed Music Festival. It’s not only good for us, but good for the local music scene as well. We are going to have a good turnout for the show,” Culberson said. “It’s going to be a really good show overall.

Doors open at the Main Cellar City Club at 6:30 p.m. Tickets can be bought for $25 from the band and for $30 at the door and online. For more information, visit www.acourseofaction.com. Also on stage Friday is another local Burke County group Justifyed. The band joins A Course of Action for a combination of solid original hard rock music and then familiar 1980’s and 1990’s tunes with Justifyed.

"Savage Henry Review of A Course of Action"

Ok guys....welcome to SMT....I sat through all your tunes and I must say I really enjoyed your band and all your songs. great production, solid songs and musicianship all the way around. Well done guys, nice riffs, really good vocals, clean playing and some fairly catchy material all add up to a nice well rounded package. The band appears to have a good image and I can see this band selling on the commercial level. I can't really complain so I won't....listened to several bands last couple of days.....you are the only one to spark my interest...tight sound too.....well done guys.........Overall really good band with commercial potential................8/10 - Sign Me To Road Runner Records

"Harvest Moon CD Review"

Rooted in the Appalachian reaches of North Carolina, rockers A Course Of Action have been steadily drawing attention to their contemporary sound through tireless performing and a strong DIY work ethic. After more than a decade, during most of which the band was known as Hybrid, A Course Of Action has put forth their debut album Dark Before The Dawn. Drawing on hard rock notables such as Tool, Papa Roach, and Sevendust for inspiration, A Course Of Action's sound integrates well with the style of rock preferred by mainstream listeners.

Dominating Dark Before The Dawn are the pinched, staccato riffs of Jonathan Byrd and John Culberson. The first song on the album, "Tell Me Why", establishes the band's direction with a sputtering pace that is complimented by nicely melodic choruses. Most songs follow this pattern, with "See You Again" offering a bit of a Papa Roach swirl and "Until It's Mine" possessing some Soundgarden qualities, but there's a rougher edge to Dark Before The Dawn that helps distinguish the band from their forerunners. The guitar tone is more jagged than the polished radio darlings which, to me, lends credibility to the band's desire to add a bit of grit to what currently passes as the rock scene. An interesting bit of trivia about A Course Of Action centers on Byrd. Back in the early 1990s, he was a member of the Southern rock outfit Copperhead, whose song "Long Way From Home" was featured in the Mickey Rourke movie Harley-Davidson & The Marlboro Man. Those were some crazy times, kids.

Anyway, things really begin to come together for the band on "Never There". The grinding, low-end riffs are more consistent here and keep the song's momentum at an even pace. Byrd and Culberson punctuate the track with several nicely placed leads and a very tasteful solo. "One Step From Down" also maintains a pleasing tempo with melodic, Tool-like riffs. Culberson provides an impassioned vocal performance here as well, adding to the genuine appeal of the song. Overall Culberson has a smokey, mid-range rock 'n' roll voice well-suited to A Course Of Action's musical direction. Never once does he sound strained or hollow.

One other track that stands out on Dark Before The Dawn, despite the halting riff patterns, is "Shadow". The band mixes things up a bit here by bringing in some synth effects which, along with a more discernible bass presence, adds a touch of menace to the track which aligns it a bit more with the dark tone of the album cover.

A Course Of Action's formula is not complicated and does not push any limits, but it does result in an enjoyable listen that modern rock fans will want to experience. I wouldn't be surprised at all to hear songs from Dark Before The Dawn on your favorite Clear Channel station alongside Alter Bridge and Chevelle. - Harvest Moon Music

"Dark Before The Dawn CD Review"

"This sounds like something I would hear on the Octane station on Sirius satellite radio. It's where the heavier rock bands are played. As I just mentioned, they are a rock band, and they sound pretty kick ass. The singer reminds me of the singer from Sevendust. He has that nice soft singing voice and it sounds like just about the same ranges too. I didn't hear too much of the same heavy vocals, though that Sevendust has. The music is pure heavy rock. Three Days Grace, Breaking Benjamin, Red, Sevendust, etc....those kinds of bands. I think my favorite song that I listened to was Now You See. It was a little on heavier rock side, the vocals were kick ass and just all around a great tune. I'm officially a fan."

Bio

A Course of Action is a powerful foursome that brings many years of musicianship and a genuine love of music for the sake of music. They are known for incredibly tight live shows, commercial edgy, radio-friendly, hard-rock music that promises to break the cycle of “new” rock styles and refocuses listeners on solid rock music, with clear influences of Alice in Chains, Tool, Sevendust and current influences such as Alter Bridge and Chevelle.

Lead guitarist, Jonathan Byrd, played on the national scene in a Mercury Records act known as Copperhead in the early 1990’s, but when that band met their demise, he and founding member, Tony Hawkins, formed Hybrid in 2000. They recruited for 3 years to find the right singer to solidify their vision for Hybrid, and they found that reality in John Culberson, a South Carolina native who also had regional success in True To One. After a few lineup changes, the band found their stride when they added Florida native, JT Silvestri on drums and Wes Johnson on bass guitar.

The band has been making huge strides month after month since then. The band was honored with an AFE Tour for the troops in 2008 and 2012 brought some label interest, but nothing that was the right fit. 2013 held the first SXSW showcase for the band, and 2014 brought a performance at Rocklahoma, as well as several national opener slots. After much local success and national/international radio airplay from the band's debut album, "Dark Before The Dawn", the band began working with award-winning producer, Beau Hill on tracks that would begin the band's forthcoming second release, titled "Treason". Tracks "Who We Are" and "107" have received lots of attention and produced two videos.

A Course of Action is a band to watch. The band is known for tight live shows, great music and solid original material. Hailing from North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida, the group brings many years of musicianship and a genuine love of music for the sake of music. That coupled with a strong DIY work ethic, the band seems poised for great things.

Once the band was asked, "what is your gimmick?" The answer was, "there is no gimmick. We are just four normal guys from the South making great rock music."

A Course of Action is proudly endorsed by Clayton Guitar Accessories, Soultone Cymbals, DC Axes and Curt Mangan Strings. They signed with Star 1 Records on 01/21/15.
