REVIEW

The Vaudevillains,

Friday,May 16

SERVING up a feast for rockers with a feel-good appetite, Werribee-basedrockabilly/psychobilly band The Vaudevillains headlined the box social night at Melbourne's Ding Dong Lounge, hitting all the right notes with a twist of jazz. Playing to a mixture of Mohawk-haired punks and vintage-inspired classy guys and dolls, the audience was treated to a smooth performance — as crisp as the creases in their trousers.

Opening with the title track to their current EP Vaudevillain Nights, Jim Morris' frantic domination of the double bass set the mood for raucous rockabilly.

Upbeat and catchy, crowd favourite Werecar encouraged an attempt at swing dancing among a few couples on the dance floor. Singer and lead guitarist Adrian Whyte admitted he wasn't sure if he wrote the song about a possessed car-turned werewolf or vice versa, but either way the energy of a rogue car on a reckless mission was well and truly transferred onto the stage.

Following a brief climb up the double bass, the rhythmic Neighbourhood and country-esque Trip to the Moon brought the explosive show to a close.

"Robert Gordon & The Gang They Couldn't Hang, Adrian Whyte @ The Corner, Melbourne (02/04/2010)"

An eclectic range of people gathered at the Corner with the odd Stray Cat’s or Ramones Tee spotted in the crowed displaying how diverse Robert Gordon and his band’s styles really are, as well as the diversity in their fan base. With your band featuring the likes of Glen Matlock (Sex Pistols), Slim Jim Phantom (Stray Cats), and Gordon’s long-time guitarist Chris Spedding as well as the supports being the very talented Melbourne band The Vaudevillains, this was set to be a night to remember.

The Vaudevillains attractive front man Adrian Whyte had a voice that was perfect for his genre of music, Psychobilly. His at times passionate tones resonated well with the crowd, one gentleman even calling out to Whyte, expressing his feelings. “I’m a damn good player, thank you! How much am I paying you?” was White’s modest response.

The audience was drinking up the music, clapping along and some were even wiggling a bit. Devil Drives A Valliant was a song that had you wanting to move more than just your feet.

For his last number, White seemed unsure of what to perform for the crowd, beginning with a bit of something that he compared to the Willy Wonka tune then going on to perform Trip To The Moon as his last song. This is a band that everyone should check out. A fun band when performing that left the crowd wanting more of their catchy and up-beat songs. This is a band that will go far!

Bio

Welcome to my Sonic bids press kit!

My name is Adrian Whyte, I am a guitar player, singer and songwriter based in Melbourne Australia.

Originally gaining experience and attention with my first band 'The Vaudevillains', I now tour as a solo act with musicians joining me from bands that I met in the three years of touring and gigging.

I guess my style is a mixture of rockabilly, bluegrass, jazz and blues and a bunch of other random influences. Kinda like Johnny Cash trying to play a guitar as if it's a piano and singing at the same time!

I love to tell a story in a song, and am very passionate about my guitar playing and performances in general.

Here is a quick look at some relevant points (in my mind anyway!!!)

- I am currently working as a columnist for Australian Guitar Magazine
- Have had songs played on Triple J and Rage (National Radio and TV respectively)
- Have performed with international acts in the Psychobilly scene (Robert Gordon and the Gang they couldn't hang, Tiger Army, Nekromantix, the Metoers, Mad Sin and more)
- Have had my works distributed to national stores across Australia and Europe
- Endorsed by Lakewood Guitars Germany and am currently their clinician for Australia
- Endorsed by Sparrow Guitars Canada
- Touring regularly as a Solo act
- Book and promote my own shows and shows for other bands
- Teach guitar professionally

I've also played lead guitar for 'Manic Pistoleros' who have gained alot of attention in Europe for outstanding musicianship.

I visited the states in January 2011 and caught the attention of Guitar collecting guru Norm Harris, (Norman's Rare Guitars) and was filmed playing and put on his website next to a clip of the Foo Fighters visiting the store.

For the future, I'm really excited about a new album which captures my solo style but is embellished with a mixture of different instruments that I also love to hear and play. I'll be out promoting my cd through public radio and gigging across Australia and one day internationally.

Thanks for reading,

Adrian Whyte
