Brooklyn-based Atypicals are an anomaly in the house and dance music scene—a fresh alternative to predictable, loop-based production so prevalent in the electronic world. Described as "an electrifying coalescence of psychedelic rock, jazz, modern electropop, and house" (Midnight Poutine), Atypicals fuse house and electro with the jam band mentality: songs within a live set melt seamlessly together, and feature large open sections morphed and manipulated at the whim of the band. Whether you're dancing hard at the front of a packed house or zoning out to your iPod for the morning commute, Atypicals are always inviting.
Composed of Adam Zucker (guitar/voice), Jacob Bergson (synth/percussion/programming), and Wenzl McGowen (APC40/Ableton/saxophone), Atypicals are bringing back the unique energy, the artist-audience relationship, and most importantly, the spontaneity afforded by a real band playing real instruments, without sacrificing the familiar hard-hitting soundscape and danceability of the house genre. Their music twists, turns, and catches you off-guard, constantly evolving through phase after euphoric phase; every show is an adventure, synthesized from and subject to the creative energy present in any given moment. Which means that every show is a collaboration between Atypicals and their audience, an experience unique to that place and time in the universe, and to that singular collection of minds and hearts.
Atypicals most recently played as part of CMJ 2010 in New York City, where they opened for Drop the Lime. They will be appearing on Balcony TV this November.
