Biography

Winners of numerous acoustic music and songwriting awards—including the 2010 We Are Listening Int’l Singer/Songwriter competition and Best Group/Duo at the Int’l Acoustic Music Awards (2010)—Alathea takes stories from their own lives and weaves them into music that’s instantly relatable. Perhaps such relevance is because the music is born from community; perhaps it’s through the intentional effort to find the modern in the traditional and to complement roots-based, acoustic music with vocal purity and smoky harmonies. Alathea stretches from singer/songwriter fare to bluegrass-inflected pop tunes, creating a sound reminiscent of artists like Indigo Girls and Mindy Smith. Alathea travels around the country and across the world averaging over 150 events each year that include NPR’s Woodsongs Old Time Radio Hour, Pennsylvania’s acclaimed Musikfest, Bristol’s Rhythm and Roots Reunion as well as performances in Europe and Asia.

Lyrics

Hurricane

Written By: Mandee Radford

Mississippi’s rolling, north to south
Flowing down to the mouth
Where the gulf waters rise so high
When the hurricane blows by

Preacher man is saying there’s gonna’ come a flood
All the sinners washed in Jesus’ blood
We wait we watch the changing sky
For the hurricane to blow by

I’m laying low like the delta land
This water is gonna’ hem me in
I feel it rising from all sides
When the hurricane blows by

All the trees are swaying with the choir’s hands
And the rain comes down like a marching band
We brace ourselves for the peaceful eye
And the hurricane to blow by

I’m laying low like the delta land
This water is gonna’ hem me in
I feel it rising from all sides
When the hurricane blows by

God’s gonna’ trouble the water
Wade in
Oh rain. . .

I’m laying low like the delta land
This water is gonna’ hem me in
I feel it rising from all sides
When the hurricane blows
On this delta land
This water is gonna’ hem me in
I feel it rising from all sides
When the hurricane blows by

My Roots Go Deeper

Written By: Mandee Radford, Andy Gullahorn

I had my dreams and big ideas
But reality was grounding
I appeared to be a dying tree
With others towering around me

They say from on high
What a waste of time
Won’t let that lie define me

You can’t see what’s hiding here beneath the surface
You can’t tell how my heart grows till you unearth it
I may not touch the sky
In my soul I am a seeker
Though I fail most times I try
My roots go deeper

My best laid plans all came up short
In that stillness I kept growing
All the cold hard rain
Just gave me strength
It took those days to show me

No matter how slow the process goes
It’s the journey that defines me

You can’t see what’s hiding here beneath the surface
You can’t tell how my heart grows till you unearth it
I may not touch the sky
In my soul I am a seeker
Though I fail most times I try,
My roots go deeper, my roots grow deeper

My roots go deeper than these eyes can tell
An endless living water well
Feeds me till I’ve had my fill
Deeper than these eyes can tell

You can’t see what’s hiding here beneath the surface
You can’t tell how my heart grows till you unearth it
I may not touch the sky
In my soul I am a seeker
Though I fail most times I try,
My roots go deeper

Broken Record

Written By: mandee radford, cristi johnson reilly, matt stanfield

I thought
love would be easy
Like playing an old song

I see
how hard you’ve been trying
but it’s feeling wrong

I’m not the girl who sticks around and fights for love
I’d rather sing some sad sad songs about nights alone

I am like a broken record
Playing the same songs, playing the same songs
I’ve been skipping over places
The words where you wanna sing along
Baby, just when you feel like you feel me
I’m pulling away
Cause I am like a broken record

I know
I can be stronger
it might be my best move

If I stayed here
You say things’ll get better
After we’ve worked it through

Maybe I should stick around and fight for love
I keep on singing sad sad songs about nights alone

I am like a broken record
Playing the same songs, playing the same songs
I’ve been skipping over places
The words where you wanna sing along

Baby, just when you feel like you feel me
I’m pulling away

Oh put the needle down
On the vinyl
I hear
hear the music
Oh put the needle down
I hear the music

I am like a broken record
I am like a broken record

I am like a broken record
Playing the same songs, playing the same songs
I’ve been skipping over places
The words where you wanna sing along

Baby, just when you think that you have me
I’m running away
Baby just when you feel that you feel me, I’m pulling away

Common Ground

Written By: mandee radford, cristi johnson reilly

Every one of my plans have fallen through
I’m scared to take another step

Everyone is watching my next move
I think hard about what happens next

All it takes is a scattering of rocks
One single misstep at the top to
let loose the landslide

Do you have to hit rock bottom
To find common ground
Do you have to hit rock bottom
To find common ground

So I have fallen and my friends gather round
It’s clear how much we are the same

On this lowly but holy ground
No one can place any blame

All it takes is a scattering of rocks
One single misstep at the top to
let loose the landslide

Do you have to hit rock bottom
To find common ground
Do you have to hit rock bottom
To find common ground

All the way down
All the way down to here
When I fall down
When I fall down
You’re here

Do you have to hit rock bottom
To find common ground
Do you have to hit rock bottom
To find common ground
Do you have to hit rock bottom
Do you have to hit rock bottom
Do you have to hit rock bottom
To find common ground

Come Home To Me

Written By: Mandee Radford, Cristi Johnson

Rise and fall
like the tide
my hand moves with your chest
Steady now
The moon will pull
a slow and even breath

Out of the blue
The storm rolls in
I see it in your eyes
Thunder strikes
but I will be
a place for you to hide

Your heart rises and it falls just like the waves
The highest point is just before it breaks
I will light a candle for your welcoming
Baby come home to me

Night moves in
And you can’t see
A star up in the sky
Let my voice
Anchor you
I promise the sun will rise

Your heart rises and it falls just like the waves
The highest point is just before it breaks
I will light a candle for your welcoming
Baby come home to me
Baby come home to me

I am standing on the shore
I am holding the light

Your heart rises and it falls
just before it breaks
I will light a candle

When your heart rises and it falls just like the waves
The highest point is just before it breaks
I will light a candle for your welcoming
Baby come home to me

Your heart rises and it falls
I will light a candle
Baby come home to me
Baby come home to me
Baby come home to me

Halls of Heaven

Written By: Mandee Radford

Even at two in the afternoon
the house still has a chill
It sits in the shadows
right up against the hills

I’ve been looking for the source
of the reflections on the wall
I walk out to the field
feel the sunbeams fall

It is holy
A little bit of glory escapes
From the halls of heaven
A little bit of glory escapes

Seems like everyone is waiting
to cross over Jordan
Eyes to the other shore
this one forgotten

You can’t tell me the kingdom
of God isn’t here
as you watch the morning fog roll in
then disappear

It is holy
A little bit of glory escapes
From the halls of heaven
A little bit of glory escapes

The silence of God is still
louder than our screaming
we think He’s quiet
but, oh, He is speaking

In the face of the suffering
who cry out to us
When we touch, we are touching
the wounds of Jesus

They are holy
A little bit of glory escapes
From the halls of heaven
A little bit of glory escapes
It is holy
Oh the glory escapes

Saving Me Now

Written By: Mandee Radford, Cristi Johnson Reilly

I’ve laid out the plates
Poured out the wine
Just like I’ve done for you time after time

I’m making my peace
Breaking this bread
Not gonna leave until everyone’s fed
And everything’s said out loud
This is what’s saving me now

All the troubled paths I take
Lead me here to find my place
At this table our heads all bowed
This is what’s saving me now

I’ve walked in the woods
Feet on the ground
Head in the sky and my heart all around

I’m forming a prayer
From the pieces of spring
Leaves and the twigs
And the holiest things
I hear the rocks sing out loud
This is what’s saving me now

All the troubled paths I take
Lead me here to find my place
At this alter I kneel and bow
This is what’s saving me now

I’m wearing it out
Traveling hard
Playing some songs on my old guitar
One small voice out loud
This is what’s saving me now

All the troubled paths I take
Every question I cannot shake
Every tear from a heart that breaks
All held by God somehow
This is what’s saving me now

Butter-the-Fly

Written By: Mandee Radford

Big black fly, buzzing in the kitchen
Big black fly, hoping and wishing
That she’d be more than a big black fly
Buzzing in the kitchen

more like the
butterflies, circling the flowers
butterflies, passing the hours
She recalls the butterflies
circling the flowers

She flew over to this house from a field of clover
Now it’s crumbs of apple pie laid out below her
When she dreams and closes all of her eyes
She dreams she has color on her wings
She doesn’t make a sound when she flies
She dreams that she’s a butterfly

But she’s a
Big black fly, buzzing in the kitchen
Big black fly, hoping and wishing
That she’d be more than a big black fly
Buzzing in the kitchen

A stick of butter laying on the table
Stick of butter might make her able
what an idea from a stick of butter
laying on the table

She flew over to this house from a field of clover
Now it’s crumbs of apple pie laid out below her
When she dreams and closes all of her eyes
She dreams she has color on her wings
She doesn’t make a sound when she flies
She dreams that she’s a butterfly

So the big black fly that was buzzing in the kitchen
The big black fly who was hoping and wishing
That she’d be more than a big black fly
Buzzing in the kitchen...

Here’s what she did, she ate up the butter
Yes she did, she had it for supper
You are what you eat, she ate up the butter
had it for supper

She flew out of this house to the field of clover
Now it’s rolling green meadows laid out below her
Life is a dream - she closes all of her eyes
She thinks she has color on her wings
She doesn’t hear a buzz when she flies
Now she is - butter-the-fly

You are what you eat
From your wings to your feet

Blueberry Jam

Written By: M. Radford / C. Johnson

I woke up this morning
First thing on my mind was lunch
We picked ourselves some berries
We picked overselves a bunch
Gonna make blue, blueberry jam

We're cleanin up the berries
Picking over them
Washing off all the dirt
And taking off every stem
We can make blue, blueberry jam

Well you know the blues are coming
When you got an empty jar
Just crush up some berries
And cook em up, it's not that hard
Then you got blue, blueberry jam

Maybe down in Memphis
They're making barbeque
Since you've got peanut butter
I've got the spreadable fruit
I got the blue
Yeah, I got the blue
The blueberry jam

The Wind

Written By: M. Radford

I hear the wind
blowing by the window
kicking up the leaves
they’re flying in the sky

oh hear the wind
blowing by the window
singing a song
such a sweet lullaby

tomorrow we’ll fly a kite and it will sail
like a boat in the sky but with a tail, with a tail
tomorrow we’ll fly a kite and it will sail
like a boat in the sky but with a tail, with a tail

i hear the wind
blowing by the window
a gusty northern breeze
makes it cold outside

i hear the wind
blowing by the window
singing a song
such a sweet lullaby

tomorrow we’ll make an angel on the ground
every snow flake falls without a sound, without a sound
tomorrow we’ll make an angel on the ground
every snow flake falls without a sound, the only sound is

the wind
blowing by the window
singing a song
such a sweet lullaby
singing a song
such a sweet lullaby

We Go Up to the Mountain

Written By: M. Radford / C. Johnson

We go up to the mountain
So we can walk in the valley
We go up to the mountain - we can walk
We go up to the mountain, we can walk in the valley
We go up to the mountain, we can walk

We find peace on the mountain
Though we struggle in the valley
We find peace on the mountain - when there’s trouble
We find peace on the mountain though we struggle in the valley
We find peace in the midst of our trouble

It’s quiet on the mountain when it’s loud in the city
It’s quiet on the mountain far from noise
It’s quiet on the mountain when it’s loud in the city
It’s quiet on the mountain far from noise

You can rest high on the mountain
When you’re weary of the valley
You can rest high on the mountain when you’re weary
You can rest high on the mountain when you’re weary of the valley
You can rest high - when you’re weary

Moses stood on the mountain
so He could talk to the Maker
Yes He stood on the mountain just to talk
Moses stood on the mountain just to talk to his Maker
Yes He stood on the mountain just to talk

We go up to the mountain
So we can walk in the valley
We go up to the mountain - we can walk
We go up to the mountain we can walk in the valley
We go up to the mountain, we can walk

Last Piece of Bread

Written By: M. Radford / C. Johnson

Don’t eat the last piece of bread, child
Don’t eat the last piece of bread
Somebody might stop by later
And we wanna make sure they’re fed
So don’t eat the last piece of bread

Share the last piece of bread child
Share the last piece of bread
Might be a friend, might be a stranger
Gonna love like Jesus said
Share the last piece of bread

Break the last piece of bread, child
Break the last piece of bread
This is how we will remember
All the things that Jesus said
When we break the last piece of bread

So leave the last piece of bread, child
You leave the last piece of bread
We might just have a hungry neighbor
And they gotta get their belly fed
So leave the last piece of bread

Don’t eat the last piece of bread, child
Don’t eat the last piece of bread
Somebody might stop by later
Might be a friend it might be a stranger
Could just a have a hungry neighbor
This is how we will remember
How to love like Jesus said
We share the last piece of bread.

Don't Forget to Dream

Written By: Mandee Radford

Don’t forget to dream
Don’t just stay awake
Living in between
Or flying from this place

Reach out for the stars
Reach up in the dark
Everything you are
Is brighter than their spark

Go beyond the limits
Your heart is full - so feel it
You have a song - sing it loud - and don’t forget to dream....

Now, nothing but stars and moon pave the path in front of you
It’s ok if you fall when you’re fly, I’ll be waiting to catch you
I’ll hold you

Don’t forget to dream
Don’t just stay awake
Living in between
Or flying from this place
Reach out for the stars
Reach up in the dark
Everything you are
Is brighter than their spark

Go beyond the limits
Your heart is full - so spill it
You have a song - sing it now - and don’t forget to dream....

Now, nothing but stars and moon pave the path in front of you
It’s ok if you fall when you’re fly, I’ll be waiting to catch you
I’ll hold you
